I don't think its bad, just confusing. And to get a lot of the story you have to read the datalog. I hope XIII-2 doesn't have a datalog.

Well I tend to be fine with those Shinji Ikari characters so I didn't mind Hope. Snow was fine because even the game seemed to know he was stupid and a bit over the top. I think they could have toned him down a bit, but I liked the likeable tough but dumb guy thing they had going on. It could obviously been done better, but whatever.

Guest characters join, but I think you can't change their equipment and they're set at a preset level.

Thanks man, the feelings are mutual, but I tend to like bratty teenage characters. Honestly, none of the main characters bothers me.

The two chapters with Sazh and Vanille made me love both characters - but I never found a chapter that really redeemed Hope. I really did try my best though (and I like his dad!).-Pyromaniac-

From what I've seen, though it isn't much, it looks like Hope is much less annoying in the second go around. Hope it sticks throughout.

Lightning could be male and it would make fuck all difference. Actually that's false, they couldn't use a hawt male character to sell the game as effectively to young boys.
Ripley or Sarah Connor she is not. She's basically early-game Cloud with muscles.

Also comparing her to Cloud isn't helping your case, because cloud is awesome!

Cloud was awesome because there was context to his awesomeness. He was infused with mako and was "apparently" a first-class SOLDIER.
Lightning is just a regular sergeant or something with no special abilities yet she can take on large groups of higher-ranking soldiers without breaking a sweat. That makes no sense and she comes off as being designed to be awesome just for the sake of being awesome. There's no reason for her to be awesome in the context of the game and the whole thing comes off as being paper-thin.
Is this is why I didn't end up liking Snow's character and honestly the whole game really. Nothing Snow did was stupid... I don't remember any scenes where he literally did anything that lacked intelligence. (I mean other than the you're fighting a God figure archetype in every RPG in general) He was desperately trying to save his loved ones without having any real way to do it. So he was just winging it and trying to keep positive yet the whole cast hated him for it for no reason what so ever and the game never let you forget it up until the very end.
Also it's 3 years after FF13 so he would be 17.

Agreed. I don't like Lightning very much. A strong female character to me in a game would be... Chris from Genso Suikoden III or Ayra from Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu, I guess. Or maybe the closest thing might be Celes Chere from FFVI if we want to stay within the series. I found Celes to be a far more convincing female protagonist than Lightning.

Right... does the game go that far in advance though? I figured it would be just pretty much 3 years ahead and backward to change things.

She needed less of a backstory. They give away too much and in turn it creates a huge disconnect between what she actually is (unholy destroyer of worlds) and what the game says she is (military grunt in need of a promotion).
Somewhere Kitase and Toriyama with their team of translators are laughing at us.

Well Hope dislikes him for his own reasons and Light dislikes him for her's. Like Snow, Light also kind of puts up a front of being very tough and that's why I think she's annoyed by Snow. She can see past his front and that honestly he can't do much. He couldn't save Serah even with all his talk and even after she "died" he still continues to talk. All that talk can be annoying I guess for her. There's also the fact that he and his Team Norra are all about being protectors but they don't seem to actually do anything and this bothers Light who is actually part of the "police". Add that this seemingly good for nothing bum is dating your sister who you've tried your hardest to protect and I can somewhat get why she doesn't like him. So you really have this character who talks a big talk, but I guess for some, he never backed it up.

I remember watching the FFXIII Qore-video and the framerate was balls in that video... so I'm sure it's fine ingame

Correct. But he doesn't have offensive power behind his casts. Speed + Power is essential.

I won't really argue your points. But isn't this why people praise Bioware? Because female Shepard is written like a man and thus has no female stereotypes. Compared to Ripply where her desire to save Newt comes from easily written and stereotypical motherly traits?

Yeah. I'm glad it has an easy mode too. Have they said anything about the difficulty of the game? I hope its toned down a tad from XIII though.
The three hours I played on Normal were fairly easy.
I guess believe Lighting was just as cocky if not more so, she was ready to take on the whole world by herself.... it was so pathetic that they used that as the games reason for making the team split up for 40 hours. It's like he and Team Nora were the only ones who were trying yet no one seemed to give a flipping hoot and said F you.
Also, you say he's a bum here's no real indication that he really is one. I guess they just want you to imply that for some reason. I mean he treated her good as far as we know and he had to have some way to buy her that engagement necklace. Lighting seemed like she was just angry for no reason at the wrong people. It's like if I had a girlfriend with an older sister and my girlfriend got cancer and the sister hated me. Clearly, Snow had everything to do with her becoming a I'Cie and he was his fault.
Look, I get what you're saying and I kinda get why Lighting would be angry with his cockiness to a point, but I just feel like it was so poorly done in the context of the game and the writing that it just came across shallow.

I don't play FemShep so idk. Though I suppose personality would matter less when it's a character designed for the player to project themselves onto.
Ripley's motherly traits come from a need to redeem herself after her daughter dies without her (timelapse between Alien and Aliens). Of course, that point was established in a scene that was deleted much to the dismay of Weaver. So I think the motivation brings it above the stereotypical "let's have her be motherly because that's just how girls are".

XIII was not so bad, just some bosses I thought were a tad annoying. I really hated the Doom counter bosses put on you. I know its cause you "aren't going fast enough", but if I'm still in the fight, and will win, I don't have to get an instant KO, cause I didn't beat the boss in 5mins.
