I finally played the demo.
I'm glad to see they now have QTEs in Final Fantasy. I was a little disappointed when Serah and Noel didn't team up to slowly rip the twitching giant's head off it's shoulders while blood spurted everywhere. Whenever I see QTEs without excessive brutality I get sad and miss God of War.
The whole thing really does feel like they took a page straight out of FFX-2's playbook. Mission-based areas, loads of sidequests, free roam of locations, etc. And I guess time travel.
Motomu Toriyama: "I don't know how to cohesively follow up a game with a conclusive ending, so time travel!"
The biggest problem with FFXIII was the first 20 hours being tutorial. Everything else wrong with FFXIII, like
78. Pretty Line Syndrome, incomprehensible plot which required you to study the Datalog and read a web novel that wasn't translated from Japanese to understand it, cast of annoying characters, and Deus Ex Machina ending because the game was 3 years late and they still didn't know how to end it, none of those were that important compared to not actually being able to play the full battle system for 20 hours. It's not as if the battle mechanics were THAT COMPLICATED in FFXIII to begin with. FFXIII-2 dispenses with all that and lets you play right away it seems, which is kind of nice.
