Where is the place with the dragon bones?
Take the boat southwest of Camp Bronze Lake. Actually have a pic of the boat, lol:

Kinda curious, since I have some questions about the game I haven't been able to get answers to.

First, does anybody know roughly when the open beta starts? I imagine they'll take a couple weeks to do patching, but between the open beta and early access periods, I wouldn't think they'd wait too long.

Has there been any word how frequently they're planning to release expansions? I still haven't seen all the locations XIV has to offer, but I feel like I have a darn good headstart. It'd be nice to know how frequently they're planning to offer new locals and such.

Third, what servers is GAF going to have an official presence on again? This is mainly just a curiosity thing.

The game releases on 8/27. Early access should start around 8/20. If we assume Phase 4 will be a week long, and that SE will need a few days between the end of Phase 4 and the start of early access, you should expect Phase 4 to begin somewhere between 8/9 to 8/12.

No word on expansions that I'm aware of, but I'd expect one when the PS4 version hits, which will probably be by Summer 2014 I'd guess.

There was a post awhile back about GAF servers. What I recall from it was Ultros is the new server for US/EU players and Sag is the Legacy server. There's also a Japanese server, but I don't recall which one.

You'll definitely see GAF on more than three servers though. I would just imagine the largest presence will be those three main servers.

Open beta should start in August, the only date we have right now for anything at all is release date of August 27.

Yoshida is planning the first expansion between 18 to 24 months after launch. Big content updates every 3 months. And small patches at least every 2-3 weeks.

I think you are underestimating what an expansion is supposed to be, and no, Wings of the Goddess is not a good example.

I gotta ask guys, I bought this game at launch and it was pretty bad. Does anyone here think it will be worth coming back to when it relaunches? I've played a little bit of the beta and it was certainly an improvement just I don't know if it's worth it.

Very nice setup you got there man. For me, it took me a while to get use to targeting my party since i play a healer and i always will be a healer until i figured out that pressing Up or Down on the directional pad targets my party members. Now i can heal with EASE on the PS3 controller.

Oh really?

That's amazing. Thanks man for posting that.

I've had such a hard time targeting (I'm a Conjurer), it's been my major gripe with the PS3 version.

Okay, guess Ultros is the place to be then.

Probably a real good thing it'll be awhile before the Open Beta. I would've needed a few weeks to recover from that marathon session anyway. When beta's are only available two days out of the week, they do really weird things to your game play habits. >_<

I guess the PS4 launch would be a good place to put out an expansion. I hope that expansions bought on one platform work as crossbuy on another though. I might not have my PC upgraded by then, and if so a PS4 copy might be tempting, if only to get 60fps at 1080p. I've got to drop down to 720p to get 60fps right now.

I kind of like the fate system, I've had a few occasions where I just engaged a boss mindlessly and was about to die and people started coming to help :lol

I told my friends and I was like dude I'm tanking a boss with some lancer guy and I think I'm dying.

I had a similar experience on my CNJ. I saw a NM fate, nobody was around so I figured I would engage him. Tanked him for a few minutes until there were around 5 people there, then eventually someone pulled aggro from me and I just healed them while dpsing. I don't think I would have been able to do enough damage to the mob in the allotted time to kill it solo.

Oh, so we'll be getting smaller content updates periodically? Nice!

That seems a lot. Especially when (if Im not mistaken) Yoshida said there wouldnt be much new areas till the expansion.

He actually said in a previous interview there would be new areas downloaded between expansion packs up to a large amount depending on how quick the content can come out. He also said we would get Ishgard content before the first expansion pack or at least that's how it is currently (Who knows about this one... it feels like the reveal of the city keeps getting delayed and delayed ; ;), so with Ishgard alone we should be getting some additional new areas before expansion. We probably won't head into the other 5 regions of the game though till a new expansion, and I'm sure there will be plenty of additional dungeons we can't get into till release. For instance we still haven't seen the revitalized Aurum Vale and Dzhamel Hold (one of which is in an area we still haven't seen even slightly, the Coerthas lowlands), or any of the 2-3 Castrum dungeon crawls. There are still plenty of areas that are hidden due to closed gates in beta which may or may not be available in launch.

Could've sworn it's been said that the number of zones'll double by the time the first expansion comes out.

I see. Then it doesnt sound so bad. Lets hope they can pull enough content.
I really want to see Ishgard since 1.0 ...

xD Too often was I tanking as an Archer. >_> I like how the Fate's always pop up, so then I just wait for a group to get together, then we go in. Fun stuff.

Can anyone read Japanese? I'm curious about what's going on over at their side of the beta forums. This thread in particular interests me because I think it poses the same concern that I have about the game right now, and I'd like to know what the general attitude is on that side.

I'm worried that for a subscription based MMO this is just too linear. It feels like there's nothing going on outside of the main scenarios. I'm having a lot of fun with the game and some of the design is just wonderful, but I worry about longevity. There's not really anything to work towards or any NMs to camp or anything at all to make you stand out (not aesthetically). You're pretty much just following the same path as everyone else.

/sadpost

It wouldn't take much to swing this though. They can leave the railroad in tact with duty finding and everything else for the main scenario, while populating the world with content for you and your friends to explore in open dungeons and wherever else. But I get the impression that they're not working towards this or that it's not a thing that's planned.

All there seems to be are FATEs, which are just big monsters that pop up on the map for everyone and give experience points.

What is the sub fee price for this game? Has it been said yet?

Fees for subscription cycles longer than 31 days as well as retainer usage fees are not yet determined. An announcement will be made as soon as these fees are determined so please stay tuned.

I'd love it if they eventually got down to 9.99 for a Standard sub, but I'll probably be just fine with an Entry.

So is crafting not that good/important in ARR? I'm not sure how it was in 1.0, but I was really hoping for a more FFXI-style crafting system where it was actually quite an achievement to have a maxed-out craft and not everyone did it (ok, maybe not quite as hardcore as XI, but those who played back in the day should know what I mean).

That seems a lot. Especially when (if Im not mistaken) Yoshida said there wouldnt be much new areas till the expansion.

I think it is enough time for them to build up a completely new storyline, since that's what expansions are focused on. They will probably include a new continent, maybe the Garlean Empire, or something else, meanwhile through content updates they will just fill gaps in the Eorzean continent.

Also, from Feb. 22:

Q40: This might be a bit early to ask, but could you tell us any plans for an expansion?

A40: As we just mentioned before about the addition of a new race, we are looking into this for the first expansion, which we would like to release within two years of launch.

Crafting is actually fun in XIV. XI crafting system was just plain bad and nightmare inducing.

The economy didn't develop yet so it's hard to predict what effect it will have on the game world, but it's definitely more accessible and pretty much every legacy player I know seem to have one Discipline of Hand maxed.

Hell, even gathering is fun in this game.

But I'm not sure where the economy could even come from to make crafting/gathering worthwhile. Who's buying gear off of the Market Board and why? It's not better than what you get from NPCs and not as good as what you find out of town, apparently.

I'm sure this has been asked before but how do you go from Uldah to Limsa Lominsa? I see that ferry from western thanalan but it says I don't have enough funds and I had like 39K gil

Once you get to a certain point in the story (I think its around level 10 or 15), you get an airship pass that will let you fly there for cheap.

I was seeing it a lot with the armor set right above the one I pictures, the one with all the spikes, that make people look like a lancer/dragoneer?

That was a nice looking armor set too, except for that weird helmet.

Kinda curious about this strongest armor set. I never got that far, in part because I missed a day to technical difficulties, another day to leveling a blacksmith upto lvl 19, and a half day during a very poorly time computer upgrade.

Neg, that set is ugly as fuck. Am talking about...

Just comes in white, so may be what you were seeing around.

Max level HQ items with multiple materia are supposed to be the best armor and you need the crafting class and the level of the item that made the gear to meld materia.

The entry into crafting is definitely way easier than XI; you can get from 1-10 without leaving the guild and making a profit from quests. After that, though, it seemed like every single synth involved items you had to get elsewhere and you pretty much had to put a bit of effort and grinding to get to the top.

The Garlean Empire's the entire rest of the planet, though, aside from, like, one island city that was name dropped in the old side quests.

That's true, then we can slowly get through all the continents, one expansion at a time. Sounds good to me.

don't be fooled by how generous the rewards are from quests
doubt final release will be like that
loots from raids and special fights and GC are gonna be a problem though

How do you guys feel about the 2.5 sec GCD and the amount of abilites tied to the GCD?

Edit: I think it needs a reduction and some abilities removed from the GCD.
Let's take shield bash for example, I don't like it being on the GCD at all. If I trigger the GCD with an attack and the monster decides to do an attack immediatly after, there is just no way i'll be able to interrupt in time.

Mmm, that is a nice looking set, but I don't recall seeing it in the game anywhere.

I think some of the, overuse of certain colors, can be attributed both to what starting colors you're given after completing the dye quest, and the cost of the various dyes.

Ice blue, which is what I used to dye things a cool white shade, was one of the starting dyes, and only costs 40gil. Most the other 40gil dyes were mostly, less subtle and more primary. There were more subtle dyes available, but most were something like 300gil, and that adds up if you're buying enough to dye all your armor, plus your next few pieces.

So, I think a lot of people went to Ice Blue, simply because it was one of the best looking cheap dyes.

I really dislike the way they use the GCD in the current system. I think I preferred the way it was in 1.23 or whatever version it was where each ability had its own cooldown. My choices during combat felt more meaningful back then. *shrug*

MRD30 tanking Haukke Manor, was being busy the whole time, the GCD times gives enough time to think what to do next, check timers, look around for stray enemies moving towards mages due to sleep spam. Also, gives enough time to buff up weapon skills with instant abilities, or use any other type of instants.

At 50 there will be many more skills, so more things to keep track of and decide what to use. Also going by the difficulty increase through the dungeons, I can see the level 50 dungeons and raids being quite hectic.

And to be honest I rather have these no-recast weapon skills sitting on the GCD than the 30-45-60-90 seconds WS we had in 1.x, back then (as a melee) after going through 3 different combos you were always waiting around 10+ seconds for the first combo to be ready again, but this time you are always busy.

The only down time I've had as a MRD was when trying to control a large crowd of mobs and by the last mob of such crowd my TP would be very low, so I'd just sit there letting the dps finish that mob. I consider myself a noob-tank but I've practising during these beta weekends so I might need to improve my TP managing skills, however from my experience those specific situations were the only ones were I was sitting there doing basically nothing for 20s~

Well, I ended up buying a lot of materials for crafting off the Market Boards, mostly because I didn't want to have to level up a bontinist, as well as a miner, just to have the materials needed to level a blacksmith, so I could attach materia.

Never did get any materia attached btw, since Blacksmiths can only attach to weapons, and cannot attach materia to higher level items than they currently are. I was on the final day of the beta by then, and I didn't want to take another half day to level my blacksmith to level 25, just to put an extra strength bonus on my sword.

But, yes, I ended up buying a lot of Iron Ore and Elm Lumber off the market boards, as well as some materia, when I thought I was going to be able to attach it. I'm fairly certain there were NPC's for these somewhere, but I didn't know where.

Besides, the Iron Ore was probably cheaper than what the NPC would've charged. Somebody was charging like crazy for Elm Lumber though. 2000Gil for 5 pieces! Highway robbery!

I'm having some problems with the beta launcher. It finally updated, but it won't do anything now. The World button at the bottom of the launcher is green, so I assumed I had to click it and select a server, but when I do, I'm taken to a blank page that says Server Status at the top. What do I do? I've already tried closing the launcher and restarting it and that doesn't change anything.

The beta is offline right now. Should be coming back up Friday in the early morning.

Was a noob Tank for this phase of the beta too. Was a Lancer in phase 2, and I might go back to that. I went with Gladiator this time, because in phase 2 we were always waiting for tanks to show up, to be able to head into dungeons. That appears to be much less of a problem, now that the Duty Finder is in place.

Did feel like I was finally getting the hang of it near the end though, so I suppose I could stay a tank.

I do agree that the actions did seem they had a weight behind them, specially as melee dps, but there was down time waiting for timers. I remember very well those painful seconds during Chimera and Mistress waiting for that 30s WS that started the main 2 MNK combos, and seeing the clock getting close to the 17 min mark.

I prefer instant WS only limited by TP/GCD, and not by their own recast. I do think the TP mechanic needs to be improved somehow.

Yeah, I could see how playing a limited amount of content could give the impression of a limited amount of content, lol.

Forreals, though, Yoshi-P mentions this in the Design Concept thing:
Doing the quests and reading the story text without leveling another class, continuing to play straight through for 60-80 hours you can see the world’s longest list of credits, and even after that continue to adventure through Eorzea. There will begin to be a difference in player skills as large enemies appear and players gather equipment to combat these foes. There are a ton of plans in store: primals that are summoned in to Eorzea, the housing system, what happened to Bahamut, the Crystal Tower, large scale PvP, company crafting, and more. The feeling that you are living in Eorzea will really take place after the "ending."

It's at this point in time where you will start to need multiple level 50 classes and jobs, battle strategies, efficient usage of skills, and intense analysis from players passionate about research. This is why the early stages of the game and the core battle system have been simplified. The much discussed length of the global cooldown is because you have time to think at the moment, yet once you reach end-game, that free time will all but disappear as what you'll need to do will increase, so with that said, we do not plan on eliminating this.
