I'll toss the counter point that specifically WoW (and many Blizzard) games are very friendly to lower-end machines. I think a lot of PC users have also been conditioned that it is ok to pay monthly for an MMO where as console gamers are not.Just to go back to an earlier subject, pertaining to assertions, FFXIV ARR would have limited appeal to non MMO players, outside of Final Fantasy fans.
Well, most MMO's aren't available on consoles. While that isn't the ideal place for the genre, its the only gaming ecosystem a lot of gamers have access too. So XIV has the potential to tap into parts of the market that WoW and other MMO's haven't been able to penetrate yet.
With that in mind, it was probably wise of Yoshida to put such a heavy emphasis on training new players, in the game design. It doesn't make sense to, just keep trying to cannibalizing WoW's market share. Not when so many other MMO's have taken that approach and failed.

Anyone know how much this will cost per month in the UK?
with less and less time to play games, I'm on the fence with this one. Feel like I wont really be able to get the most out of the game..
On an unrelated note, what was up with all the clicks to hand over quest items. Why shouldn't that all occur automatically for me when I turn in the quest to the NPC.
Because of PS3 players.
That doesn't make sense. Wouldn't PS3/PS4 players make more sense to have "click to turn in quest"s instead of the "hand them the quest item" system?
From a UI standpoint it still seems like a cumbersome thing to do. On the screen where they make you select a reward or in something similar it should display that you are handing over the quest items. The PS3 answer was from interviews or the live producer letter, however this is the current standing on that issue:
Feedback: It's a hassle having to select the quest item every time it needs to be traded.
Status: Discussing to address in an update after launch
Comment: We understand this, but at the time of launch when there will be many MMORPG beginners, we would like them to remember the action of trading in these items and therefore implemented the system in this way. Once players have gotten used to this and if the timing is right to add in conveniences we plan on simplifying it.

Otherwise they need to mark the items as quest items.
Quest Items are already segregated into a separate bag for Key Items.
Woah you are from the future O.O
Also beta is closed until August
What a paradox, because the PS4 has not been released yet, and the beta is already over.
Shiiiiit, my bad, PS3
Wait, I just downloaded it Sunday and it was working, so it's unplayable until August now?
I would say very few existing MMO players are going to come to FFXIV. WoW is still a huge thing and the free to play options continue to grow with better games every day. FFXIV just doesn't match up to some free games in terms of gameplay or technical execution. And we have seen again and again that being pretty doesn't help to keep subscribers in MMOs.
FFXIV's chance on the market is the Final Fantasy fans and the console people or just generally people who don't normally play MMOs. And so the tutorials and training that don't mean anything (or are even annoying) to us veteran MMO people are essential to the success of this game. FFXIV is dependent on a new audience coming in to play because of the Final Fantasy name and for being the highest profile console MMO. I really doubt it is going to win over any of the existing genre players on PC for any appreciable amount of time.
I more or less agree though. Xivs best chance at success is to go after a different audience.
I assume this is the case, but is there confirmation that you can purchase the PS3 version and then download the PC client and use your account on either?
If you had an account already from 1.x (PC only) you will get the release client as a free download using your existing (PC version) account. Buying the PS3 version gets you a PS3 account code to attach to your SE account.I assume this is the case, but is there confirmation that you can purchase the PS3 version and then download the PC client and use your account on either?
If you did not have an account already from 1.x (PC) and you just buy the PS3 version you can only play on PS3 and will have to buy the PC version separately since it has a different software key to add to your account.
I'm highly skeptical that a console userbase can sustain an MMO. I hope I am wrong but we also have the end of the generation working against us. I'd guess a lot of people would be looking forward to the next generation and might hold off on buying games for the soon to be old consoles. And that's why they're going for the PS3 userbase.
I must be dense, but how is this intuitive? It seems crazy backwards to me. Maybe I've played too many other MMO's where the quest items are automatically handed over for you?The whole quest item thing is so intuitive and trifling that I never would've noticed if people didn't point out that it wasn't automatic.
The NPC asks if you have the item so you look through your inventory to see if you have the item. They ask you to hand over the item so you hand over the item.I must be dense, but how is this intuitive? It seems crazy backwards to me. You should just delete it already, the client doesn't work any more.
The beta phase 3 ended on Monday morning, and the open beta on August will use a completely new client.

That's not true, you don't need any key to install the game and be able to play on PC with an existing account created from PS3.
Oh, I was looking at it more from a "makes sense" kind of standpoint. It's so easy and harmless that I just wouldn't have guessed it'd ever be mentioned. I don't mean to sound condescending or anything; it just seems so non-existent to me.I'm a fan of ARR, but I have to agree that not having to go through the motions of finding and passing over the items is more intuitive (from a playability standpoint). Most MMOs that I've played have that as the default.
It's a minor complaint though, for me.
Hmm, really? Then why was there a big fuss about the different versions?

This doesn't say anything about a free download to people who get the PS3 version.
I have to agree with Keiichi. I much preferred the FFXI summons. I wish they just used smaller versions of the exact same model. You think they would jump at the chance to re-use some assets!
I really don't like what they did to the summons, which it's a shame because the summoner is one very cool job.
FFXI did them right, even though the job was so unwanted.
Would it make much sense if summoners were to be able to summon Ifrit, Titan etc. in the context of FFXIV story though?
I could be wrong as I skimmed a lot of story in the Beta to save it for Release (And I'm drawing a blank from 1.x), but aren't Ifrit, Garuda etc. worshiped as Gods in this game?
That's why I said I don't know if it has been confirmed about the client appearing for everyone on the SE account site. But you don't need to register the PC client with your account if you already have the PS3 account.
I'm not saying you don't have to purchase it, the only thing is that you need to get the client. It's like this current beta that just ended, PS3 testers were able to play on PC if they wanted to, by just downloading the client from the beta forums.
It was likely a decision formed from feedback but in the end they still decided to go ahead with the plans for the free company ones. It would be more then a little redundant and stupid if Free company just gets to summon a 'larger' version of a normal summon cast from one of the games jobs so they made them completely different entities.

I don't know if these conditions create a larger population on one platform vs. the other though.
I still think it's ridiculous I can't buy a PC CE and link it to my existing account. I'm never going to play this game on PS3 but I really want the physical things.

I'm getting the PC CE just for the artbook and the soundtrack, not to get the bonus items or the game itself, since those I will be getting them regardless for being a V1.0 CE owner.
But you can. The CE stuff is a separate code. If you buy the PC CE you get the game code and a CE goodies code (along with the physical goodies). You then apply the ARR CE code to your existing account and bam, your existing account is now an ARR CE account and then you have an extra ARR basic version game code you can re-sell, gift, or use for a dualboxing account. Or, if you had 1.x CE then you don't need to buy ARR CE for the digital items. Only buy it if you want the physical goods (and then you have an extra ARR basic version game code PLUS the CE digital goodies code you can re-sell, gift, or use for dualboxing).
Oh the irony. People complain because they re-use assets. People also complain because they create completely new models.

Will the August beta actually let us unlock the full-on job classes? I really wanted to be a Dragoon - lancers are so boring.
Greetings everyone,
First off let me apologize for the delay in getting a response on this topic for you all. As I'm sure you can imagine, there is a lot of information to gather and discuss within the team on this topic.
We often try and wait until we have concrete information before we post, but as the dev. team will need some time to fully investigate, I wanted to post in here to assure you that you have been heard and we aren't turning a blind eye to the discussion.
Thanks, as always, for your feedback and as soon as we have more information, we'll be sure to share it with you.
I am jealous! Unfortunately I'm not a V1.0 CE owner. Just regular 1.0 (I was turned away by moldy cups). So I would need to buy the PC CE and then do a digital upgrade ($19.99) to get everything.
Well, it's not like the lore came into existence on its own, they wrote it.
Plus, Carbuncle proved they can have avatars that aren't Egi.
It worked in XI, so I don't see why not.
