Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Beta Phase 3 Impression: Phase 4 August

How long is the beta? Im thinking about signing up, but I have never played a FF game before and Im afraid it's going to feel too complex for me to ever get in and keep playing.

Don't worry, the first 15 levels of the game have been catered to beginners. It eases you into everything (albeit a little too slowy, but that's okay).

As for how long Beta is, there's only one Phase left, and it'll only be running for a week in August before Beta is completely over. No one knows the exact date for Phase 4 yet though.

Thanks! So if I sign up now, I can play it first in August then?

i came in to ask, how is this game on ps3? I loved playing everquest online adventures on ps2 and i dabbled with ff11 on 360 but it was too much of a hassle to find parties to play with...

is it worth getting for ps3 and then getting it for ps4 later? Or should I just wait?

I played beta phase 3 on PS3 and it was great. Gamepad controls were hard to get used to at first but once you've had practice with it it works really well.
Of course you would get better performance out of a good PC, but it's not bad at all on PS3.

No, it is NOT essentially the same. Haymaker consumes your GCD in ARR meaning you have to consider its use over maintaining your normal combo rotations. Frankly the skill is too weak to be good for party settings.

That's pretty much why its Counter. Did MNKs Counter in XI when they weren't tanking? No? Okay then. You don't use Haymaker just like you don't Counter in parties. It's a solo mechanic. That's why they're similar. It's counter in a more active combat system.

Also, Counter didn't allow MNKs to tank in XI. Counterstance allowed MNKs to tank. Even then, MNKs only really "tanked" small fry and inaccurate Abyssea bosses. You didn't send a MNK to tank Nidhogg because they would get fucked up royally.

from what I have heard the PS3 version allows you to download the PS4 version when it becomes available in 2014. someone please correct me if i'm wrong though

That is a huge sigh of relief right now lol would like new pc build but yeah wedding and all to save for, best to get the ps3 version if it's not all that bad. PS3 keypad good with it or better to just hook up a usb keyboard?
Sorry for the late reply. Not sure about the keypad, but I just went ahead and bought a cheapo wal-mart wireless keyboard. Works well, but I need a comfy place to put it while playing.

Hey guys, I typically play tanks in MMOs due to them being the most sought after role. I'm curious whats the scoop on tanks in this game? Which tank class is generally considered the most balanced and wanted?

I bought a wired usb keyboard for the game and I find it fine to just sit it on my lap while I play.

Who knows? Both. They just do their jobs a bit differently.

Plus, it won't be tanks being most sought after in this game to start, it'll definitely be Conjurer and Arcanist. Anything to heal.

i played the beta to max. on ps3. controls were great for my tank and damage dealer. first time playing mmorpgs with a controller, and i don't think i can go back to mouse and kb. maybe pad and kb.

the framerate can be a bit rough outdoors. it's fine so far in dungeons imo. i can't complain too much about graphics, but the frame skipping is a bit bothersome at first. i got used to it by now though. overall a competent port. i'm surprised it runs this well actually. i'll jump to ps4 when its out, so i got something to look forward to! well, if the game doesn't suck that is ;)

There are two tanks in the game. Gladiators are sword and board block tanks. Marauders are 2h axe drain/hp tanks. Both seem viable, and it's hard to say which will be better in the long run. I'm going to guess both will remain viable.

Anyone Pre-Order this game in Canada?

I want to Pre-Order to get early access. I was going to order it online from the Square Enix store, but I can't even log in with my email and password keeps saying incorrect etc.,

What store should I pre-order from to get a code for early access???

Roegadyn Marauder !

Wasn't disagreeing about this.

However, Counter in XI is a (less interesting) defensive mechanic (it only has a chance to trigger when a mob's attack roll is a hit) that just happens automatically. That's very different from a skill that A) requires you to evade rather than get hit B) makes you to (potentially) sacrifice your rotation to use it. Haymaker is a great skill when you learn it but in practice I feel like it loses relevance as you level up.

Plus, it won't be tanks being most sought after in this game to start, it'll definitely be Conjurer and Arcanist. Anything to heal.

Assuming that translated/rumored Arcanist ability list (.DAT mining) is complete and accurate, I can't see them being a healer either which is kind of disappointing. The game really needs another healer besides Conjurer during 1-30. Scholar is going to be an AOE healer (while WHM focuses on single targets mostly), but that won't be until 30+ when you can even unlock it. I suppose Carbuncle could heal the party, but I'm not sure if I would trust a pet to do that after messing around with my companion chocobo in Phase 3. lol

If that list is true, Arcanist looks more like a Warlock-type character which is interesting to me. I mean, kind of disappointing because the game really needs another low level healer (imo), but as a class, Arcanist looks like it'd be fun.

I wonder if scholar turns some of those dots into hots if cast on a player. Otherwise there are no potential healing spells outside of those 5 spell you get from the 30-50 job quests for scholar or the pet. From reading the description it seems like that might work. Still doesn't sound like it solves the low level healer issue of there only being 1.

They mentioned when talking about multiple jobs for the other classes that if Dark Knight was a Gladiator job, it would change the Gladiator abilities (to damage abilities instead of enmity I guess) when you equipped the Dark Knight job.

So I assume when you equip the Scholar job, most of those would just become healing instead.

Low level healer situation is terrible though. I would rather Arcanist was a healer and equipping Summoner would change the spells to damage.

Interesting. I don't really look at dat mining as I think it ruins the fun out of stuff, but if all that is true, Conjurer it is. There is the most wanted class, by far.

You shouldn't have to sacrifice your rotation to use it, it doesn't change form and it has a 12s duration. If you're in a situation where you're fighting something that is focused on you then you should absolutely use it, it hits far harder than anything else would in that circumstance and it applies a 20% slow which will reduce the damage you're taking.

You may never hit the button in a group, but I think that is the whole point of it. Its there to make up for the fact that you're losing positional damage when you're soloing.

That's definitely possible (turning DoTs into HoTs). I was always a big fan of HoT healers in other games (like resto druid in WoW), so that'd be fine by me if that happened. But yeah, still no low level healer solution.

Same. Or they can just leave most of the spells the same, and add a healing spell that you get early on. Most of their damage while solo could come from DoTs which is fine, but when you are in a party, you could be a healer with a new low level spell. I would say just equip Conjurer's "Cure" spell and you'd be good to go, but the Duty Finder would categorize the Arcanist as a DD/DPS if that list of abilities is true.

I don't typically look at a lot of .dat mining stuff myself, but I was way too curious on Arcanist (because I plan on leveling it at launch). I think the class will be fun to play, but... I'm just a little concerned about the lack of healers 1-30~.

Resto Druid was always my favorite in Wow. Amazing mobility with instant cast hots. I am going to level WHM but if SCH is anything like Resto Druid I think that might suit me more. I just hope they are fairly balanced.

Same here. :) I mean, Resto Druid was my favorite class/spec in the game. I did level up other healers as well (Holy Pally and Holy Priest), but they were never as fun as Druid was to me. So yeah, if Scholar is anything like Resto Druid, that's what I'll be playing a lot. Well... assuming Scholar and WHM are both balanced and work well with each other.

I used the word "(potentially)" because of this. In many cases it will be worth using (because it doesn't change your form) but other times you may want to skip it because blowing your GCD on it might mean losing your Greased Lightning or DK blunt debuff or something. I guess that decision making is part of the fun.

If you're solo/duo/etc. and aren't doing a proper rotation because of positioning restraints then yeah it's absolutely something you should be using pretty much whenever it lights up.

Is phase 4 the open beta? It seems i registered my beta code to the wrong one of my 2 FFXIV accounts and that's why i've been unable to access my legacy character so far. If it's not open, i don't suppose anyone just happens to be sitting on a spare code they could give me? Unlikely, but worth a try :) Would like to confirm my character actually works while we're still in beta.

Needs a darker outfit. :P

But pretty good try on the face/hair. xD

Yeah, I definitely agree. I never bothered with the dye system yet or anything and I just took that screenshot with the time I had.

My main character will look totally different and will actually end up being a Paladin. ;)

So, I need to get a new HDD because mine is almost full now.
I was thinking on getting an 128 GB SSD and install the OS, PSO2 and FFXIV, but I still cant decide if its worth it only for fast boot on W7, would be a worthy purchase also for those two games? (also considering I only have SATA 2)

Once you start using a SSD, you'll never want to go back. Loading an area in FFXIV takes like 2-3 seconds on my SSD. I think this is one of the best purchases I've ever made.

I pre-ordered the PS3 version at EB Games (gamestop Canada) and they didn't have any pre-order/early access codes. I emailed EB and they hooked me up with a code after I verified my pre-order. Now I'm set for early access whenever SE opens up the registrations.

I would go with a 256 GB SSD these days. They are cheap enough that the additional storage is well worth it. Once you've seen how revolutionary the performance of SSD is you'll want to install everything on it.

Kinda funny you got an early access key from them before SE even gives me mine. I can't tell if I did something wrong or what. Their online account system/store is so so so so bad and confusing.

I just ordered one of these. One of two things will happen.

1) It changes my life and I go on a PC upgrade binge.
2) It doesn't live up to the hype and I am sadface. =(

I hope the game doesn't focus so much on dress up like PSO2, but it seems like that may be the case with all of these outfits.

Well, there's armor for battle classes, crafting classes and gathering classes, there will be crafted armors, dungeon armors, Grand Company armors, token bought armors, raid armors, primal armors, artifact (class exclusive armors), and costumes.

Yes, dressing up is the main purpose of the gaming., I'm not being sarcastic, but we'll be playing to collect all those armors for one or other reason.

Oh it'll be the former guaranteed. The only downside is that 256GB isn't enough space to install everything on it.

My prediction -

1. You'll be satisfied with the performance boost to your computer in general
2. You won't notice such a large difference in game load performance that you'll care about putting everything on your SSD
3. You won't want to use a computer without a SSD in the future

So, I need to get a new HDD because mine is almost full now.

It's worth it. Fast boot is bliss and it cuts loading times down to ridiculous levels. I have 2 SSD's in my PC :)
