Final Fantasy XV Announced for PS4

So to me this looks like the best Final Fantasy (in concept) since 7 or so. I haven't been this excited for a Final Fantasy in a long time. That said: Am I going to have to know / understand all the gobbledy gook from Square Enix's horrific recent Final Fantasy games in order to be immersed in this title? Or have they talked about whether they're going to make it more of a stand alone title where the user doesn't have to pay attention to the junk from the other games in the "versus" world?

I'm very concerned about this.

How many more hours till the square enix event?

Unless it has a: -2, -3

next to it no FF ever is related to each other so dont worry

That trailer hit every note perfectly, especially the name change reveal at the end. Expertly done.

I was watching with a friend whose last FF was X and isn't really into the series - "I don't play Final Fantasy but that looks amazing. I'm getting that."

Feels good.

I bet a few of you were like this + KH3 reveal:

sorry this is my fav gif

The game's presentation made me preorder a PS4 at Amazon immediately, exclusive or not.
Everything about the conference gave me a PS2 vibe again. Even the console while standing has a similar look.

It really feels like a mainline FF game, so the name change is justified. Kind of bewildering that there's such a huge difference between this and Lightning Returns.

From the looks of it, this is going to be one of those games people call a "JRPG" despite everything about it clearly being more standard of an action game. It will at least play nothing at all like any numbered Final Fantasy before it. For better or worse the series has gone full action. I hope Nomura delivers his best, because I'm less forgiving in this genre.

I was seriously blown away by the trailer. The CG, the real time sequences - everything looked beyond what I expected after 2 1/2 years. Lots of new areas, new characters and some other changes like the much improved menu - though I'm not sure I'm a fan of Stella's updated design... the original hair style was a bit better I think.

I just need it in HD so I can dissect it better. Square has yet to put out any sort of press releases or anything that I have seen yet.

Even after a night's sleep, I still can't get over how hyped I am for Versus and KH III. I haven't been this happy about games in years.

Any chance SE has said when we will get direct feed HD trailers? I need to have Versus in true HD, and not just a E3 Stream.

One thing I really loved, wa show it was Fading NOmura out almost to rush to the trailer. I dont know if that was intended, but it came across as really cool.

do you think they will have press release and screenshots/gameplay after FF event?

IGN and GT have the smoothest versions of the trailer so far.

The footage definitely exceeded my expectations. Can't wait for the "future of FF" presentation.

Posted this a few weeks back
Screen lights up
'Final Fantasy'
Crow goes 'ooooh'
'XIV - PS4 edition'
Crowd yells, 'they're pulling this shit again?! Fail SE.'
Trailer ends, screen goes black, and then,
"This is a fantasy based on reality." Shimomura violins cut into the silence and the game blows minds. Trailer ends 'Final Fantasy' and then 'Versus' but then the 'ersus' fades and an 'X' appears before the V.
Crowd 'OMG YES, rumours were true!'
'Coming exclusively to Playstation 4 in 2014' screen goes black
Hashimoto speaks above the crowd's cheering, 'but now, let me invite you to see what we hope to bring further in the future.'
On-screen 'this trailer is running real-time on Playstation 4 hardware.'
Silence, and then, a piano is tickled as 'Dearly Beloved' melts into the crowd and a scene of Sora on a beach in what looks like pre-rendered CG appears, but it's not CG! And every single person in the room is overcome with goosebumps. And there are 6 pages of 'OMG' posted in GAF in the space of 20 seconds.
The short trailer ends with 'Kingdom Hearts 3' 'coming exclusively to Playstation 4'
GAF errors and people are furiously f5ing

You did good Square :)
Can't wait to see XVI on dat Luminous Engine - it'll put SE at the absolute top in terms of graphical prowess.

Until Witcher, Skryim, Mass Effect are not called WRPGs, it's really a lost cause. Versus is a JRPG, along with Deep Down and Dark Souls 2.

The best thing would be if people dropped all the prefix letters and just called them RPGs and action RPGs. But they won't.

It's not a standard action game either though. That's something like Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry. This will have a lot more RPG elements than that.

It's called "shamelessly pandering to fujoshi"; I'm not supporting this trash. Give me playable waifus or give me death.

It's not pandering when the story calls for it. It's supposed to resemble a college bro road trip, so the main cast are obviously gonna be males.
If you want "waifus", go play the many, many JRPGs created solely for pandering your audiance. God forbid we get one decent JRPG without loli's and all that other trash.

Dunno if this was mentioned already (probably), but I can't be the only one wondering how the heck will this actually be an jRPG? There was nothing in that trailer that suggested as such to me. Really looked like an action game. I hope the SE conference will clear this up.

Agreed. Looks like such a quality title from Square Enix. I look forward to a release window. I hope its summer 2014, but perhaps it may be Fall.

Trailer was enough for me to go back into maximum hype mode, I don't even need the game any time soon lol.
Got to say it's the same for me. I had long gotten accustomed to this game only being a very cool idea that never got realized but they have me by the balls again.

It's Final Fantasy XV, completely stand alone.

You played KH2? That game is definitely an RPG, and it has sequences like the ones in this trailer. Just relax, your levels and equipment are intact. :)

So how does the combat system work. From the trailer it looked like hack and slash, but there were menu options I noticed like attack, magic act, so is it a hybrid of ATB and free form combat?

Action RPG.
Think Kingdom Hearts, since this game is the groundwork for the system KH3 will be using.

so now it comes down to 'when'.

Hopefully FFXV releases by Holiday 2014, KHIII by Summer or Holiday 2015, FFXVI by Kitase's team by Holiday 2016... or is that unrealistic?

Then again, after the Fabula Nova Chrystallis reveal in 2006 the assumption was: FFXIII by Holiday 2007, VersusXIII by Holiday 2008 (lol), and an eventual KHIII by 2010. Many of us couldn't have been more wrong about that.

I believe S-E is in a better position now to pull projects around faster than they were 7 years ago.
To my understanding, Luminous is an actual fully functional engine to work with now, unlike The White Engine/Crystal Tools was in a comparable time period. If true, that's encouraging.
