Final Fantasy XV Gamescom Active Time Report - CNN reporting live from disaster scene

It blows my mind they were willing to completely change the look of the King character, because reasons, but were digging their heels on clearly the worst designed character in the game.

Again, I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt since they say they have a reason for changing his appearance, removing Stella, and the possibility of removing all the cool scenes Nomura envisioned. On top of that, I've come to accept that this isn't the Japanese Mafia inspired Final Fantasy Versus XIII that was shown for most of it's existance. FFXV is looking more and more like another standard FF game.

Out of interest, please could you describe the Mafia parallel? Perhaps it is obvious, sources I found claim it but do not explain it.

Lucian royal family had that sort of Yakuza style going on with what they wore/the general aesthetic of "modern" royalty, etc.

They really haven't showed anything truly mafia-related other than a bunch of men wearing suits. Mafia will always be thought off as being a criminal syndicate, while Lucis(Lucian nobles) seem to be champions of peace. Other than the "they wear suits and meet in business-like fashion with other countries' leaders", they are basically pretty standard as far as royalty/nobility goes. You got a family that rules and those loyal to the family(loyal to fight FOR the family). They are wealthy and rule a nation and pass down power through generations. That's royalty, back in the olden days and even nowadays(even though a lot of monarchs seem to have been demoted to figureheads). I think it's just modern means to rationalize their look without having to explain "Royalty: Past to Present".

the regis change might be more upsetting than stella's. namine luna is a bit more conventional than stella but at least her redesign is solid and isn't as bland and uninspiring as king regis'.

fuck.

i know this isn't versus anymore and that i should expect changes but the designs were a big part of why i fell in love with the project. i'm just going to roll with the theory that this isn't really the king for now ;-;

The part that gets me the most is they showed him at Jump Festa several months ago.

It's pretty epic for a dev diary video, that Shimomura music.

Also I'm always chuckling when there's the character artist talking about food shaders. It's amazing what game development has come to.
PBR and some kind of GI is a very good foundation for outstanding graphics, if assasin's creed unity is anything to go by. The fact that they are adding other things like subsurface scattering is really making me hope for a PC version. Will definitely double dip if a PC version comes out later.

My heart is broken, i can't accept the changes nope.

From what I've been gathering the point of the design change is to make him feel more "fatherly". Old Regis looked like a Yakuza guy, which could make him hard to feel affection for in the Asian markets. Now he looks like a papa bear and a king.(the two most important aspects of his character)

As an aside here is an interesting video on some Japanese opinions on beards(on foreigners and Japanese people): https://youtu.be/LBL0BVyafKU

Going off of that you'd think it would be better to shave Regis clean, but I still think it fits him. He's definitely a lot more gentle looking.

Noctis, your daddy's original design was hella fine.

You must carry on his hella fine legacy. It will be a long, hard road, but you can do it.

(I'm think I'm still gutted more over the loss of Hot Dad than Fierce Stella. I'm a horrible person.)

This is a really great point. Many of my japanese friends have a real hatred for the yakuza, so that may well be part of the reason they changed it (if indeed the yakuza influence is gone).

This is the change that gets me. Now I'm worried all the Yakuza influence is gone and they're going for a generic kingdom.

right. if you've redesigned a major character like that why would you still use the old design in a major trailer when you're planning on revealing the new design just a few months later. they could have recut the trailer without that part instead of leading us to believe that he's remained unchanged.

aren't japanese fans upset with the change as well?

I think people are looking way, way too deep into the Yakuza meaning. The fact that it was never brought up by Nomura and Tabata is telling enough. They're Japanese men in black suits and happen to be very rich. While that's something that the Yakuza share too, that's just too little to go off of. They could very well be visually inspired (they still are) but that doesn't even begin to describe how they operate.

I would assume that if the main character's father was indeed leading a Yakuza-like aristocracy, Nomura would bring up something like that over 8 years.

Yeah I've seen a lot of Japanese fans express their confusion on this situation.

I wouldn't doubt it XD! No one likes change, but I think their motivation was to make him more in line with their new vision of the character.

The biggest visible differences lie in shaders. I'd also assume that they greatly reduced the bone count on the face as the characters don't have to emote as much in the field. (comparing FFXV ingame vs. cutscene btw, not comparing to W3)

I'm ok with girls being shown as sexy in games but that just looks stupid, do they really think woman walk around like that? Yes some are stupid enough to do that but i mean cmon. It's like the people that ok'd this are 10 years old.

I know i will get blasted for saying it but oh well.

This isn't exactly a unique viewpoint but it's been talked to death.

I doubt you'll get much heat. Even most people who like Cindy's general design acknowledge that her outfit isn't very practical.

You're right, it's a dumb look, but it's nothing new for Final Fantasy XD. I'm hoping they give her the Regis treatment.

Cidney has the most realistic looking pair of fake breasts I've seen in a game so far.

I cleared that up already:

Ah, I see.

I like the character, she's beautiful. :) But yeah you know what i mean. I know guys like seeing that stuff, just as I don't mind myself looking at nice looking men but still I actually find that the mullet haired guy with the open shirt looks dumb. I mean really? it's as if their targeting the game at 12 year old prepubescent boys and girls lol.

I mean... that age group is kind of a big part of the Final Fantasy fan base.

Aye! They wouldn't even have to change her much. Keep the cap, keep the yellow jacket, keep the gloves, keep the goggles, give her a white tank top or full baggy mechanic jumpsuit underneath that jacket, steeltoe Doc Martin-styled boots(something someone who works down in the grit would wear)... you've got it! It don't have to be drastic, just "enough".

I really like Cindy as a character (both her English and Japanese VAs were amazing), and there are aspects of her design that are really great. Her cap and jacket are fantastic. It's just the rest of the outfit is utterly ludicrous. Exposed bikini + short-shorts + high-heeled boots, I can't see how this could possibly end badly working as a mechanic! (Also, white boots on top of that? They'd be grey and scuffed to oblivion within an hour. With boots that nice, you're not wearing them to work as a mechanic. Even Kim Kardashian wouldn't do it. Poor boots, why does Cindy treat you so horribly?)

It's a fantasy based on reality! Yeah, man, we totally know what kind of fantasies.

EDIT: I love that overalls design so much. Freakin' awesome.

Heh, I'm sure they'd like a slice of those demographics! Fortunately, most of the other characters shown are more sensibly dressed.

Cindy's outfit is no more or less practical than Shinjuku boy band wear.
That is to say both are utter trash.

The one thing I'm gonna miss about Yakuza Regis is that scene in the re-reveal where he eats soup with young Noctis. While probably lost with the rest of Nomura's vision, I hope they redo that scene with the redesigned Regis. It would be funnier watching this incredibly royal man make funny faces while eating soup.

Reminds me of April O'neil, maybe Noct and his buddies can dress up as the TMNT for DLC. I've never had a problem with Cindy, her design was alright in my book. jacknicholsonyes.gif

A mechanic dressing in high heels and clothes that barely cover anything is way less practical than a bunch of ~20 year olds wearing casual clothes. Nothing wrong with Noctis & co's outfits, certainly not trash.

It's impractical for fighting dinosaurs and ancient gods. All the other dudes have armor on. I wouldn't mind, but there's such a dissonance between the main cast and everyone else.

That's what I've been thinking. Chilling in Lucis with that getup is alright, but once they venture to the outer world, put on some goddamn protective wear. Gladio looks the most stupid bare chested. Hey idiot, you probably would die less if you put on a suit of battle armor.

This has been a problem for me for years. Other than the MMO's, Final Fantasy has basically abandoned armor and it's kind of lame. Hopefully XVI goes full Medieval Fantasy like the NES/SNES-Pre-VI titles.

The "armored dudes" we've seen so far from FFXV seem to be robots and not human beings. This is also a modern world, no one goes around dressed in armor. Noctis also has magic protecting him & his friends, so he doesn't need armor, his mobility would just suffer from that.
