Final Fantasy XV Gamescom Active Time Report - CNN reporting live from disaster scene

You've seen anything from KH3 except that one very boilerplate looking grass canyon cell? Please, show us this highly developed KH3!

Now there's no need for any of that.

Just the general impression I've been given is that KH3 is a bit more on track based on interviews and whatnot. Maybe they'll do with that what they did with XV here and show they're rather disorganized.

This didn't really give the best impression on where they are and what's going on with the game. Hopefully they'll do better on the future and be more organized with things.

ok so now people are asking them to tone down the graphics to get it out the door.

I call bullshit on that because I know they'd be the first to complain that it looks like a PS3 game or some shit.

Relax. It's not coming out anytime soon. Sucks, yes. Is it worrying? Hell yeah. The game has had a rough go of it. But all this pre-emptive butthurt is stupid. Be glad the game is even still in development because as meh as everything was today, that's better than how the game has been before...I.E nothing.

This board is too negative about everything lately. There needs to be some positivity for once instead of just knee jerk raging over every little thing. That's an awful way to live.
I could care less. Then again, I'm one of the "old farts" that dont' mind turn-based battles, sprite-based games and, *gasp*, random encounters. Ooooooooo....

Now I'm not saying to that far off the deep end, but deliver the fuckin' game as a complete package, workin fine, good story, great adventure, and I won't bitch of the graphics aren't as good as they "could" be. Hell, give me a fuckin' cel-shaded FF game. Sure it will turn off some people, but this is just me talking right now. I wouldn't mind. Grand adventure, great characters, great story, awesome music and sense of epicness aren't bound by photorealism.

At this point, I'd rather them wrap the game up and release it late 2016 and spend time on VIIR, an Ito-helmed XVI,
FFVIR
etc. The longer we wait for this, the longer a large portion of SE's resources are tied up here.

I'd love to say that "I'm sure I'll love it anyway" but I mainly love FF games (and RPGs in general) for their stories and I thought XIII, 2 and LR's stories were garbage. Everything has to be so convoluted for them lately...to the point where things make no sense.

I think being a sequel to an established series helps it out a lot

And I mean that by the groundwork for making a Kingdom Hearts game is more obvious than trying to achieve whatever XV's vision is

He keeps changing stuff THAT DOES NOT NEED TO BE CHANGED.

Jesus christ.

Seriously.

What kind of priorities does this project have? Why would they decide to change perfectly fine character designs? What exactly was wrong with the original story? Why would you throw away perfectly fine CG?

When you're dealing with a game that has been in development hell THAT sure aren't the things you gotta make changes towards. What's Tabata's reasoning? Does he just want to make changes so the game feels like "his work"? Is it some focus group kind of bullshit?

Even if I take away that the fact that I was looking forward to what Versus XIII used to be it still continues to be mind boggling, is that stuff really what you're gonna spend your time and resources on Tabata? Really?

The negativity is fully deserved as far as I'm concerned

I'm not the one baselessly assassinating a game developer's character.

Whats the point of trying to incite this mob against tabata when we dont even have the full story?

I honestly can't think of an acceptable reason to change a character design that was revealed to the public and gave the fanbase several years to get accustomed to it and attached to it. Once a character design has been revealed to the public, it should be locked down, to an extent. Improve it, polish it. Don't drastically and fundamentally change it. That's arbitrary bullshit, and any director who green lights such an action is a bad decision maker and should feel bad.

Even Kingdom Hearts has become even more convoluted with the time travel and the Nobody retcon in KH:DDD.

It's hard to be positive when the situation for XV is looking that dire. Prior to Gamescom, I had some confidence that there will be an actual info/trailer blowout of the game, possibly with release window.

What did we get? A 3 minute trailer that tells nothing, bunch of Q/A which answered nothing, some halfassed concept scratches, and another short and uninteresting game footage that shows nearly zero gameplay. Hey at least there will be an official forum and a new tech demo for FF15 right?

Reworked ATR summary:

  • We redesigned Regis. No reasons given.
  • Airships? We're behind and still working on it, maybe as DLC.
  • We're nowhere near done.
  • We can't announce a release window, even if we do have one.
  • Important questions about black bars and cosplay.
  • The prologue of the game has changed!
  • Luna is a strong female character even though nothing we've shown supports that.
  • The girl with black hair? We haven't named her yet.
  • Main baddie? Who knows.
  • Stay tuned for PAX when we'll show the same trailer.
  • Feedback forum! Not ready yet.
  • New stuff at TGS and working on a new demo.
  • Malboro fight with a bunch of seconds of gameplay and a brief stroll through some new landscapes.
  • Product placement for german beer.
Huge ass game with no clear vision what so ever, they really make it sound like they're coming up with stuff as they go through development. It will most probably miss the 2016 release.

Even Kingdom Hearts has become even more convoluted with the time travel and the Nobody retcon in KH:DDD.

Yeah playing recent KH games makes me realize just how good KH1 was... Honestly, the battle system and the synthesizing weapons was the only thing KH2 had over it (graphics too obviously)

To the LR thing (not your post)... don't diss LR. Its story was needlessly shrouded but I still preferred over the entire 13 series.

This. Especially when people liked the original characters IIRC

This....

Is literally the only thing I could think of to save FFXV at this point

To save FFXV? It seems like the project is in one of the most stable states it's ever been. The time table is back a good ways, that's about all that has come out of the recent news. Duscae went pretty smoothly, the footage for trailers they've released has been well received, besides simply personal preference for a distinctly different type of game, what do you find so flawed about this?

I'm bummed as hell about the lack of new stuff during Gamescom, but why do the current threads give off some sense that many seem to think a cinematic trailer and an ATR herald some great reversal for this game's fortunes?

Take it with some perspective folks. This game could take a decade, and/or be utter crap, but I think it's too soon to take some bad or wierd news and immediately insinuate either.

Now there's no need for any of that.

Does Disney have a say in what goes on? If so, I have a suspicion Disney is behind the scenes pressuring them into getting their shit together for KHIII. I'm sure they wouldn't be happy about Square spinning their wheels.

Just reading here sounds like that the ATR is a complete mess... kinda scared to even look it now, don't want to waste my time in no-information, bleh.

What a shame too, since I'm still really interested in the game.

This. Especially when people liked the original characters IIRC

How can you blame them for this?!?

They didn't have an official forum back then!!!

I dunno. They did have Xehanort show up in a video so I'm guessing he's putting pressure on SE to release the game so he can kill/become/erase/heartless/nobody/dream Sora.

is there some sort of lionel madrake-like summary of what i've missed? This thread seems to be on fire right now and i wanna know why!
edit: I think i see one above me. huh.

Honestly, don't watch it.

Expect FFXV to be released in Q1 of 2017 and get excited about games that are more sure bets from now until then

SE had a good thing going with FFXII, I mean the game was flawed but that was what I envisioned the series to evolved into. Big sprawling explorable areas, seamless battles with fully programmable ally AI, ATB reworked into a seamless battle structure none of this action garbage, nice and clean art direction, freedom while still retaining its linearity.

Then FFXIII happened, it sent the series into a black hole of shit and looks like XV might end up putting the nail in this series coffin. Just give me DQXI SE.

Its really funny that you use the word arbitrary and then you say that a publicly revealed design should be final... What PR book did you get this from? Who made this so?

yeah pretty much they own rights to sora and company but basically square makes the games but disney owns the rights to it and disney are the ones that market it so yeah they are in charge

I didn't say this was a good start for the marketing push but by their own words it still is the (re)start of FFXV's promotion that will intensify as time goes by, culminating in FFXV's release. The trailer wasn't the correct trailer to show at this time, but it was still a 2+ minute trailer. And the gamepaly clip was 1:30 long. That's 3minutes & 30 seconds of completely new FFXV footage, no matter how frustrating & boring people found them.

FFXV is a massive game, so even if the game is starting to near completion, a lot still needs to be done. Content needs to be finished, gameplay adjusted & finished and they need to leave plenty of time for polishing & QA. Adding airships isn't a small task. It will easily mean many months of work and could potentially delay the game if they decided to add it in before the release of the game, months that they don't necessarily have before FFXV already needs to be going through final QA if they want to release it whenever they are planning to release it. I mean, for airships, they have to create the actual airship, figure out how they want it to handle & control, create the flying physics, figure out a lot of limits (are there no-fly zones? forever or do they open up at some point? where can you land? how do you get the airship to you when you're not close it? how high can you fly? how low can you fly? how to handle collisions with environment, birds, flying enemies? creating some AI algorithm for that so that the airship doesn't land somewhere Noctis & fellows can't follow, or do they just warp into the airship? what about enemy airships we know populate the skies? should there be dog fights? if not, then do they just disappear from the skies when Noctis & co take flight?) and then make sure that the engine can technically handle it all, which might mean some extra months of engine work to get it running without it dropping to 10 fps regularly.

I don't think having airships or not, is something you decide at the 70% of development of the game. Things like that should be decided at planning stage, because the world design is afected by it (see XIV zone design in vanilla and in the expansion to see how the decision of mounts affected it's creation).

All these things you say come in later and are part of the development schedule. I'd rather believe is more or an engine problem at this point. Which shows how a mess is Luminous.

Its really funny that you use the word arbitrary and then you say that a publicly revealed design should be final... What PR book did you get this from? Who made this so?

It should be common sense. I'll repeat myself: the issue is showing something to the public and giving them time to get attached to it. To "own" it in that sense. It should be obvious that if you then take it away from them, there will be some butthurt. Rightfully so. If you don't feel it, good for you. Help yourself to a medal.

They just keep changing shit for the worse. Regis was fine, I liked his original design wtf is happening to this game.

I'm so done.

I think being a sequel to an established series helps it out a lot

And I mean that by the groundwork for making a Kingdom Hearts game is more obvious than trying to achieve whatever XV's vision is

That is a big advantage for it I'll certainly agree since you have a base to work off from.

I feel like I don't even know what the vision is for XV anymore. I just hope whatever comes out of all this is actually good.

Does Disney have a say in what goes on? If so, I have a suspicion Disney is behind the scenes pressuring them into getting their shit together for KHIII. I'm sure they wouldn't be happy about Square spinning their wheels.

I'm not sure actually how involved Disney is with things though it would certainly make sense if they were pushing them to just get it done. I'd think that Square would have the same attitude with XV at this point.

I think i'm done with XV threads on this board.

The negativity surrounding this game is making scrolling through it impossible.
I mean i can happily leave without reading 20 pages of "dis game is doomed" "scrap this and jump to xvi!" "no way this is coming in 2017"and whatnot.

I'll give you some points though: this ATR was a mistake, nothing but trash. Tabata and his team are doing a terrible job at PR/marketing campaign, it gives us nothing new to discuss and only injects negativity.

But

Is it a bad thing? Yes.
Does it automatically means the game will turn out shit, or is it something enough to lose faith in it entirely? Absolutely no.

Or maybe i'm the only one that doesn't rate a movie based on a badly cut trailer and other similar examples, because this is what it is.

Sure, they are making big mistakes, but is it enough to turn every discussion in an hyperbole of negative comments (of ehich mostly aren't even costructive ones but basically just shitposting)?

Clear example: during the Versus days and until now the idea of a controllable airship in a fully-scaled, seamless open-world game was pretty much given as dead and most were alright with it because the game was "ambitious". Now they tell us they're actually working on that and already have a working system which are looking into expanding, and people are completely shitting on them.

Some people are way too jaded on this whole project.
Again, i understand, but i don't want to follow my most awaited game amidst all this negativity
plus since Kagari worned us of SE's habit of spoiling things in trailers, i was considering media blackout

See you on the other side
whenever this releases
Gaf.

You're damn right, but you know, gaf loves dramas even when based on anything like this. They have changed the face of Regis? OH MY GOD !!!11!! TABATA BETRAYED ME AND I WILL HATE HIM FOREVER.

They replaced a character that I do not know anything but that I had idealized for years it based on nothing? DIE SQUARENIX, DIE !!!

This is the typical topic of Final Fantasy XV on Gaf plus the incredible revelations of some pseudo insider, of course.

Why did they deliberately cherry pick questions they knew they couldn't share the answers to? Why not just pick ones that they actually can.. Silly.

Then maybe they should stop trying to be so ambitious and get a game out of the door. The first thing FFXIV did when they decided it was time to reboot the thing? They kicked expensive (both to make and to render) graphics off a cliff. Nobody ever said "Damn this game has fantastic skin textures and that's why it's so fun!"
FFXIV ARR had to be that way because it was targeting PS3 and not-super-hightech PCs. FFXV has the luxury of reaching a little higher because it's not an MMO that needs to cater to some pretty shoddy PCs. Besides, you bitch about shaders, but that's only a part of what they can achieve by pushing the hardware. Stuff like bigger, seamless environments are only possible by pushing the hardware. I would be extremely disappointed if FFXV turned out like FFXIV. I don't think FFXIV is a particularly well designed RPG.

And FFIXV ARR was only possible because SQEX put everyone & their mothers to work on the game. In the meanwhile, they cancelled quite a few games and didn't really begin any new projects at the time. There's a reason why the 2012-2014 is so barren for SQEX and now that FFXIV ARR has been done for a couple of years, oh, look, suddenly SQEX has a pretty healthy number of games in development, for consoles as well.

I'd rather have Tabata & Co be given ~4 years with FFXV if that means all other console game development doesn't come to a screetching halt, like what happened with FFXIV ARR.

This is so disingenuous. Whats the point of reductionist bullshit like this?

A three minute trailer that showed several emotional aspects of the game and the detail at which it will be portrayed, a Q/A that answered questions regarding where development stands, or did u suddenly forget about how much you were complaining about airships? Game footage of gameplay that shows nearly 0 gameplay... That sentence makes no fucking sense.

LMAO
this is for late 2017 at least

I expected this. Yesterday i basically said all i needed to about it.

Tabata's intention to 'make 15 his own' is falling flat, and what's worse, it seems like the development team is running in place.

They really can't say anything more than they said 6 months ago? DLC Airships? My goodness.

I would not be surprised if both the FF7 Remake and KH3 came out before FF15.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Square_Enix_mobile_games

Look at release dates again, huge push starts in 2012.

Also remember, even though mobile games are small and development light, they still have development windows. Maybe some of them take up to a year or a bit longer. So you have to look at a release date then consider the development window.

There was barely any console releases (excluding the "Eidos" side) during Wada's time. Now he's gone and all of these games get announced for consoles 2-years later which is an effective development window. So maybe it was Wada focusing on their engines that was the issue.
The problem is Tabata already stated he joined the FF15 team December 2012, and he asked after the director change that we consider all development on the current game to have started from 2012. You can place that marker at 2013 instead, but it actually is a full year, which means it's 2 and a half years in development. The leech in manpower comes from FF14 until they started shifting to other games in development. On that list a hefty chunk of the mobile games in 2012 and 2013 are ports of existing games and many of the original titles are developed by contracted developers. They are not eating as many of SE's resources as you think. Luminous Engine was staffed by hires from outside of SE. It was also not particularly eating that many resources.

Say what you want, but mobile game development isn't the reason FF15 lacked resources in 2013, if the project lacked adequate resources at all. Tabata's Type-0 team actually joined the FF15 team when he did. Moreover, Luminous Studio has more or less been dissolved and a small percentage of its members are also on FF15. Considering the amount of time 15 spent in pre-production things like character designs, character names, story, etc. should have been set in stone before 2013. If they weren't then assuming 2013-2014 was a year of pre-production and alpha. So that meant the game should have been in full production for at least a year and a half by now. If this game releases in fall 2016, it would have been in full production for 3 years. If you take his word for it, Kitase said the game was in full production in 2011. Even the biggest games don't stay in full production for so long and have so little to show!

Wada left CEO in 2013. He probably wasn't part of the decision process to remove Stella and add Luna, to change the story, to change character designs, to make a lot of changes that probably didn't need to be made, and I doubt he was part of the decision to remove Nomura from the project. The thrust of the problem here isn't that the team didn't have resources, it's that the team has been very wasteful with their resources and time.

Pause. Tabata really said they're not near completion?

He was talking about the use of airship in the game, not the actual game.

I think if they can't make airship travel work in the game they shoul just drop it. This DLC talk is horrible. Unless it was just new skin for the airship, then it'd be whatever.

And I think the new Regis design a lot better than the last one. Yep, I know, WOOOW.
