No, it's more interconnected & open than that. It's not AS open world as something like GTAs where you can go anywhere from the beginning of the game, but it's not just big areas connected by linear roads either. For example, the Episode Duscae map was like this:
But that's part of the world like this (you can see the ED area in the map there):
Nice, but can you explore all of that area in that overworld map? Or is it, in effect, limited to specific areas, like the picture I posted? (Ie, Dragon's Dogma -- huge overworld map, but you were limited to a small section of that. Or the Two Worlds 2 world map -- lots of islands, and one very large one, but you could only explore a couple of the smaller ones.).
Based on the lack of detail (Assuming that it'll be like that in the finished game, and there's no fog.) of the other areas in that overworld map, it looks like it'll work something like the image I posted. As in, you can drive all over the roads in that map, but you can only explore some of the map -- ie, to get from one area to the other (Duscae to another.), you'd need to use the roads, and the only area you can explore (Excluding the linear roads, of course.) in that section of the overworld map is the Duscae region the character is currently in, and to get to another you'd have to follow the linear roads.
Like Forza Horizon, but with some open areas.
So, it seems like, instead of using a menu to choose a level (Open area.), you use a road.
I LOVE THAT. I hate overdesigned levels which only look super artificial. What does it look like if you look outside your window?
I meant in comparison to the areas they have explored in the videos so far.
Though people have said you can jump over the fence, certain areas don't look like part of the actual, explorable world. It looks like the areas will be segmented for the "car trip" vibe. I just doubt that you'll be able to freely explore the areas in the distance -- if you really could, the world would have to be massive, like 500+ square miles. And if the fence doesn't stop you, will invisible walls?
