A little offtopic, but in these squenix videos they have this piano note in the beginning. The way it's mixed does something weird to me. Whenever I hear it I become super alert for a moment, like it always catches me off guard. But yeah the game is pretty at least.

It's the really sharp *PING* right at the start of the note. It hurts your ears just a tiny bit, which makes you alert to danger.

Does anyone know what type of "open world" game this will be? Based on the driving video, I got the impression that you'll travel along a linear road, and stop at "levels" with varying degrees of freedom? (Like, some may be more open than others.).

Ie, something like this;

But, can you jump over the fences in the game? In the driving video, and I think some of the other videos, some of the areas beyond the fence looked really basic -- the kind of areas that are typically beyond invisible walls or fences that you can't jump over in video games. Background scenery.

Pretty cool. Still haven't completed an FF game and havent played one since FFVIII.

Perhaps I'll make this my first, reviews abiding.

It's like the old FFs world maps, but in proper scale with no random encounters.
Also compare: FFXII, Xenoblade Chronicles (but with no or minimal loading between areas)

They confirmed you can get out of the car, jump over the fence and fight enemies/explore/whatever in the driving video.

Saw images from another sight, got slightly interested cause I though you could use whichever party member on the fly. Sadly I was let down in that department.

Still not sold on it being a now tactical-espionage-action-JRPG since it's a numbered FF.

Still wanting a new numbered FF that builds upon X-2s battle ... I'm never gonna get that though sadly >_>.

But seriously, only Noctis being able to use summons and magic (unless that's now changed) really bugs me

Im liking the gender swapped series mainstays. Which one will be next?

You ready to cry tears over the murder of a boy from the slums who sells flowers? At the hands of a legendary soldier girl who's prepared to start a cult and destroy the world for her papa no less. It's ok though, a brooding amnesiac girl with a stolen identity and lots of hair gel will set things right.

Hmm, gender swap fanfic FF sounds pretty interesting compared to road trip boy band FF.

I'm probably going to buy this on PS4, because by that time I will have one for sure and I definitely expect the differences to be significant. But if the differences are not too big, I might buy it for Xbox One.

Will Japanese VO be in this?

I wouldn't say thats a series mainstay, just something from FFVII

Gilgamette

Yes YES!

Combat looks cool. Really cool, actually. Hmm.

My only problem - and reason why I will most likely not be buying this game - is that I can't get excited about role playing as a Gothic teenage boy on a road trip with his edgy friends. //shrug

Yes YES!

see, the best actual mainstay was actually taken. All I'm left with now is mogs, chocobos, and airships. Female cid is about all that's worthwhile :/

Though I would like a better rendition of female black mage than lulu

How to ruin some apparently good gameplay:

Press button to cover.
Press button to warp-kill.
Press button to operate.
HOLD button to warp.

In the player's face.
Every second.

Old-style FFs. Large areas, but not free roam. Directed from one large area to another across the story beat with explorable spaces within each space. Imagine if FFVII/VIII/IX didn't have overworld maps, but rather the overworld maps were open worlds you had to traverse.

Red Dead Redemption-ish, basically.

Can't wait to play this omg, it looks so good, and the fps is kind fixed I think

the gameplay footage is on PC, right now they are still porting PC code to console and right now performance is not so good but they also said performance is the last thing they will work on

I was not expecting metal gear. But something looks off about the combat, looks somewhat awkward despite the nice animation.

The footage looks incredible. It really does seem that Tabata focused the team. We obviously don't know if the story will be cohesive but the team took feedback and the (more) finished product is looking excellent because of it.

Footage was waaaaaay way way too dark for me, especially the first minute or so. Even with brightness cranked right up, it could've been Doom 3 for all I could make out. That was the only disappointing thing, what I could ACTUALLY see looked great. But then I've been sold on this game for a while! Nice to see the spirit of MGS living on in other games.

I'm also expecting a rather diminished/relatively minor magic system now like KH, which isn't a huge deal-breaker because the melee is so good.

Tabata is going for quality for quantity, which means there are less magic spells selection, BUT each spell interacts differently with environment, and they have their own characteristic, adding depths to the system apart from just doing damage.

I feel the same way. Maybe it's just a visual thing. I would like it more if there were less hovering in the air while doing combos on enemies who are on the ground.

I LOVE THAT. I hate overdesigned levels which only look super artificial. What does it look like if you look outside your window?

Probably all the mid-air jumping around and the slight pause during hits.. when you actually play the game instead of look it comes across differently, but in any case it's not at 100% yet.

Just your imagination.

Majority of the attacks in the footage are aerial attacks, and TBH I think they're still not very smooth yet. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what's wrong, but something about it still feels slightly off to me. Like it's trying its best to be grounded and realistic, but at the same time trying to defy physics. Character action games defy physics and embraced it, Dante flashes around here and there swiftly with no regards to character animation and such.

The footage looks fun, but I think we'd have to play the game o know how it really feels.

Edit: In case you want to bring up the fact that FFXV is not a character action game, I would raise you KH2FM. That's not character action either, but Sora's aerial attacks are very buttery smooth, in exchange of realistic animations and physics. I felt that FFXV team should worry less about keeping up with the realism and either go full fast and smooth like KH2FM, or actually be realistic and grounded like Dragon's Dogma. Somewhere in a middle seem like a mediocre compromise.

I've never been so unclear on a game's combat system or "feel" than I am with XV's. I've seen hours of gameplay, but it's still incredibly hard to tell from the videos how the combat will most likely feel etc

Yep this is exactly how I feel as well. I really hope there's more tactical aspects to the combat. Maybe there is? But it's not really obvious from the videos or the demo.

I hope you guys are prepared for more metal gears in FF7 remake too.

eh, mechs have been in the majority of final fantasy games since FF6. A nuclear equipped walking battle tank though would be a nice addition.

What I'd really like is for FF to go full sci-fi with interstellar travel and aliens. Sigh, maybe next decade.

There was space and aliens in FF8 for a bit. The Type series is a good place to go for a full sci-fi FF game. FINAL FANTASY TYPE-S

No, it's more interconnected & open than that. It's not AS open world as something like GTAs where you can go anywhere from the beginning of the game, but it's not just big areas connected by linear roads either. For example, the Episode Duscae map was like this:

But that's part of the world like this (you can see the ED area in the map there):
