Reached Chapter
14 for the final battle... went back to past Lucis to level up and now I've lost the momentum and interest in grinding a victory over the final boss. Ch. 13 left a seriously bad taste on my mouth and the story is honestly a disjointed mess.

Beautiful, beautiful world. But... needed a tale worth telling.

Well, color me interested. I got the plat and had to put the game aside for now due to work, but this actually fixes a gripe I had about the tuning. I thought no warp points in the other sealed dungeons were already great.

I really don't have time :(

I'll make time

Let me also spread the word about Leyliffe in which it's 100 floors deep. Yes, that's not a typo.

Castlemark Sealed is absurdly hard on normal though. The part where I'm at has four level 90 Giants that also spam their AOE attacks and that gravity trap spell that sucks you in.

My bad, specifically wanted to reference Havana and Mykonos

But i am telling you, Balamb has nothing to do with either Greece or the greek island of Mykonos or any greek island either. :p

If the dev team said they got inspired by Mykonos for this town, then they did an amazing job at making Balamb town look nothing like it and have its own fantasy character.

Then again ffxv is supposed to be "based on reality" so maybe thats the catch...

Wished there was one more town ala Lestallum size in Lucis... this massive land has only one town not even a village of shorts, just rest areas. Doesnt make much sense to have all that infrastructure and not much to complement it.

Still ending spoilerz:

I feel that the funny thing is that Ardyn still functions as a savior/chosen one in the end. His schemes eventually result in the gods being dead so no more of this War of Old and he gets rid of the last crystal and the power behind it that would always end up creating another power hungry nation trying to steal or use it. And Lucis had too much magical power anyway.
Killing himself and Ifrit remove the starscourge/daemon for good.
Ardyn fixed all the problems in the world and got his revenge on everyone, he just took the darkest path to do it

Agreed. Ardyn is incredibly interesting. He was a complete ass, but if you think about it he got rid of the pompous gods, and he also took down the two nations that kept the world in a state of constant war.

Yes, Ardyn basically ended the war. Took down Lucis. Took down Nilfheim. Took down the main object of desire (The Crystal) and while he left the world in despair, it was a in a position of being reborn.

Basically, both Ardyn and Noctis "reset" the world in the end. No more plague, no more Crystal, no more meddling gods that are angry enough to threat on "devouring" humans, and certainly no more war between the two biggest nations.

Holy shit.

Unless you make it highly fantastycal like underground, inside a monster or below water, or go very sci fi, cities will take inspiration from a real life location
i think

I think it's also more of FF8 and FF15 being much closer to 'real life' in many aspects vs the other Final Fantasies, not just architecture. There's actually something to be said about exiting that tunnel into Lestallum for the first time and seeing the juxtaposition of familiar and unfamiliar, and seeing all the people walk around like it's normal.

Very similar effect to the first glimpse of future in Back to the Future. Shit's weird, but people are just going about their routines, and those people really sell juxtaposition.

So I was doing some quests and stumbled upon a quest inside a dungeon.

Turns out its the dungeon people complained about being too cramped with lots of bombs going off at once.

I now see why people were complaining about enemy encounters there.

Almost every fight had like 3-4 bombs and the area you fight in is VERY cramped and small and the camera is just horrible in a situation like that. The worst part was having to fight an encounter multiple times with an enemy that casts toad and petrify on you while fighting about 10 other enemies all at once in a low ceiling area that again made the camera horrible.

I barely survived that dungeon with the few healing items I had left (the dungeon boss is EASY compared to those snake enemies casting petrify and toad on you) and I was level 63 although the dungeon level seemed to be 52? It did not feel like I was over leveled for it

Just got this game on PS4 Slim and so far I'm in love.

I went through the very brief Lore Guide in the tutorial and I feel I have a pretty good grasp of what's going on even though I haven't watched Kingsglaive or Brotherhood. I just started though.

I already liked the combat from Judgment Disc, but I felt it wasn't strategic enough. Now I'm using Wait Mode and I just love the gameplay.

So far I think the game is spectacular. We'll see how that opinion evolves as I progress.

My Pro should arrive tomorrow so looking forward to that too. But the game is stunning as-is and the performance is solid so far.

I just got the platinum trophy for this game, and I have to admit it has been a massive letdown. It's the first game I've purchased and felt slightly conned -- not by SE but by the reviewers + general consensus about the game upon release. Like Schreier's review is all about how nostalgic this game is, about how it has all the essential FF components, etc... but this game doesn't feel like a classic FF whatsoever. It's certainly not as polished or high quality as FF7-10.

Its the closest realization to a PS1 FF on modern hardware.

I find XV to extremely reminiscent of an FF7/8 successor obviously with some modern sensibilities.

The level recommendations by the game are generally garbage. What it means is roughly what level the enemies will be (although that can seriously vary), not what level you should be.

Lol! So easy to cheese some exp gains. Magic crafting 1 of whatever element to make it weak, toss in something that grant's you exp when casted make multiples=profit. 200k+ exp from one enemy muhahaha. Altissia here I come
3x exp

O and eat the lasagna grants you 100% exp plus a shit ton of extra hp

Actually, you're right on the count that there's a lot of fantasy elements on top of the general blue-and-white coastal city, AND Balamb is a lot more angular/curved. There's also plenty of that in Lestallum - fantasy elements on top of just simply being Havana. I do see where you're coming from for Altissia/Venice though, it's pretty similar.

edit: Just remembered, speaking of Mykonos, there was this from CEDEC 2016

Tragic victim of fan death
Copying and pasting this post that I made in the spoiler thread sans putting in spoiler marks.

Alright, let’s get this out of the way. For the most part on implementation and getting shit actually done and running, FFXV actually does more right than wrong. That being said I heard the phrase “the game has done more right than wrong overall as a game” numerous times both in real life and on this board and I want to clarify that this is simply not a true statement. Also just because a game does more right than wrong doesn’t automatically make it a great nor a good game. It simply means it passed the checkmark of being a passable game. That is all. Having said this, I want to say that my time with the game was not completely pointless. We can all live with liking bad games or shows or music or whatnot. There are certain things in life we know are bad but we enjoy (like fast food from time to time). XV is one of those games for me. But I want to specifically lay out why XV is not a good game and I’m going to lay it out in two simple topics: narrative and game design.

The story at is core and in terms of pretext and plotpoints are absolutely great. It has a makings for a great story. The ascension of a young and naive prince, brotherhood between friends as they travel, an empire that has dabbled to deep with science, a legend and prophecy in the making for centuries. All of these are great story elements that stand on its own and together create something intricate that can easily be enjoyed by anyone immersed in old tales. Unfortunately where the story falls short is simply the execution. The ideas I listed above are only few of the interesting plot elements and points in the game. XV simply put juggles way too many narrative ideas and doesn't allow the game's flow to bridge all these elements together in a coherent manner.
Let's use the example Starscourge. It's never mentioned in the game outside of the tutorial segment. It's not used once. At all. However, this is a central conflict to the game that the protagonists fight against but is put into the background as the game focuses more on the actions to prevent the Starscourge. Which brings us to a narrative dissonance. There is so much emphasis on the action itself that the game never explains why that action is important. It's a simple thing to note that Noctis, while attempting to gain vengeance, is also juggling with his destiny to end the Starscourge, which brings eternal night, and in order to accomplish this he must gather the strength of the Astrals. There are numerous instances where this is happening whether it be the Ring of the Lucii or Luna's involvement with the legends. It's just terrible execution. I hear the terminology that the game has terrible writing. The writing is actually not that bad. The problem is that a lot of the writing is non-existent. This isn't necessarily bad writing but just really bad storyboarding. What happens is people remove entire panels and segments from a storyboard and it becomes difficult to stitch elements of the plot together to make something coherent. This is what most likely happened in regards to the conflict with the Nifelheim Empire. There was supposed to be a conflict but there simply wasn't enough time to develop this conflict in the game so the game cut it out entirely. Instead the invasion of Insomnia is used to propel the entirety Noctis' journey. It no longer becomes a story of vengeance and ascension (though the game would like you to believe it is) but a story of a legacy of lies and a main consumed by hatred. So essentially what I'm summarizing is that there are too many plot elements, not enough time for those elements to be baked, not enough time for those elements to be explained, and simply a terribly storyboarded narrative. Even the last cutscene made me go "why is all of this action important?" It just doesn't make sense. Things happen and the viewer is expected to know what is going on.

I could write an entire paper about how the game hamfists a shitty female protagonist but I will briefly summarize how I feel about Luna. This character is clearly meant to evoke a certain emotion and that much is clear because the game constantly tries to reinforce the importance of Luna to Noctis (though the game doesn't spend nearly enough time giving her screentime). Just as a conjecture, my guess is that the CG scene was already done for Luna dying but most likely they didn't have the time to do everything in regards to her, just like everything else. That point aside, Luna fails to evoke an emotion but more importantly conflicts with the central and only emotional theme in the entire game: brotherhood and brotherly love. You travel with Noctis, Gladio, Ignis, and Prompto this entire game. Whether you hated Prompto's lines or hated Gladio's douchieness or enjoyed Ignis quips or etc, the game made you feel soemthing about this game. Throughout the game you see a pre-existing bond between these characters get stronger. They were close friends that were most likely somewhat superficial, like most common friendships are, but over the struggles and harsh times they encounter they become more open and become a tighter group. While even this plot and theme is half-baked it's the only aspect of the story that truly evoked a strong emotion in the game. I will say that I legit teared up when Noctis gave a speech to his friends at the end of the game about how he felt. The game is extremely touching in reinforcing that they did struggle and through their share of joyful and painful moments, they did start and end the journey together. As a complementing theme to the aforementioned theme is "stand." Regis reinforces the idea to Gladio, Ignis, and Prompto that they don't guide or help Noctis but merely standing by him. Even Luna as she struggles to face her fate reinforces the idea of not necessarily wanting to help Noctis but stand by him. Then comes the end of the game where finally Noctis reinforces the idea to his friends to stand tall. The theme of standing amongst each other is really strong as it is togetherness and comradery that ultimately prevails. Back to the original point of brotherhood, this stands direct contrast to the romantic relationship (or lack thereof) between Noctis and Luna. Luna ultimately exists to progress the plot forward. There is nothing of consequence that really happens whether Luna is there or not. The game could've easily been re-written in some way where Noctis journeys to bind with the Astrals. The game tries to reinforce the romance between the two when the game should've really spent more time building upon the relationship of the four male protagonists. I teared up only twice in the game. Once in the post credits camping scene. The second is when Noctis asks Prompto to take a photo with him to the final battle. Holy shit what a feels moment. The game has you take pictures and I never really went back and took at them. I only saved the ones that I thought were memorable for me. However, that scene where you go through all of the pictures you saved up to that point was a whirlwind of emotions that makes you feel like you really came far with the four characters. Just... amazing (i chose the first picture if you care).

I can go more into why the story fails and succeeds but I think these two solid ways exemplify the major issues the game has.

In terms of gameplay, the game suffers immensely from pacing. Obviously this is due to narrative reasons. That being said I wish this game was linear like FFXIII. I don't mean this in terms of map design but in terms of moving the plot forward from one point to the next. The problem with open world games is that there is no sense of urgency and there is no sense of importance when significant things happen. When the Empire invades Insomnia and Noctis is quick to get revenge but has the option to spend the next dozen or so hours just scouring the world... it's just wrong... on so many levels. The game would've really sealed how important things happening are. Alas, this is not the case and as a result the game's play and flow just doesn't sit right and isn't a neatly woven experience. Additionally the game's open world while beautiful to look at is just not fun to travel. The dungeons themselves are great and so are the environments itself but the practicality of traveling through shrubs that block you too frequently and a camera that is dogshit leaves little be desired. Xenoblade had it right years ago. What the fuck XV. Quests are also bad but this is expected to be honest.....

The combat is an absolute mess and disaster. I'm a super fan when it comes to action oriented combat. I abhor the mess that XV has become. One is partially because the game doesn't challenge you to the point where you actually utilize the toolsets you have properly and the encounters suck. Let's break this out into multiple segments. We'll talk about the fundamentals attacks, how they function, and what impacts it has. Then we'll go over combat options you have at your arsenal. Then we'll go over encounter design and how that relates to the two topics that preceded it.

The combat is a simple attack with a button (which creates Blitzes) with a rhythmic press here and there for strong finisher (which are referred to as Finishers). The idea is great as you can continue to whale on the enemy until they are dead with the occasional Finishers to break and appendage. Then you have the warp strike which will allow you to make you very mobile. The dodge and parry are relegated to simple defense and attack buttons. Then you also have the ability to throw magic here and there. All of this on paper sounds great. Unfortunately this doesn't well because the game the game is way too inconsistent in execution. The animations for attacks are super clunky and doesn't have the finesse of something like Kingdom Hearts. It's difficult, annoying, and cumbersome to swap weapons in a Blitz string. The magic damages your own allies (albeit not much). The parry system is stupidly broken and overpowered. It's not good. The combat system itself is not balanced nor playtested clearly. This is what is called a passable action combat system. KH2 perfected combat 10 years ago. Come on Square.

Then you have the combat options available, primarily managed through the Ascension Grid. The Ascension Grid is awesome by the way but fails when compared to XIII's Crystarium. While Crystarium was extremely linear, you knew exactly what you were getting with each role and how they affected combat. The execution of the Crystarium in relation to the progression of the game is why it ultimately sucked. Here in the Ascension Grid there aren't too many things that truly change how you play. In XIII if you invest in the Medic class then you know exactly what you're focusing on. Here you just deck out certain categories... not changing how you play. You're still going to mash Blitzes and it doesn't really change how Blitzes work. That's SOOOOO boring. Also the game offers too much combat options in the beginning. You get four weapon slots from the get go. You get magic from the get go. You get Limits from the get go. LIke... holy shit. Have these designers played a game where you felt like you were getting legit stronger over the course of the game?

Then we come to the encounter design. LMAO. This shit is so inexcusably bad I have to hold myself back. Between the shitty enemies (and numbers) that are being thrown at you with the craptastic lock-on system, I don't know how people are giving the combat praise. I'm not the world's greatest player but I'm definitely not the worst. I'm better than the average considering I blew through Bloodborne with absolutely no trouble minus Father G. because I had an issue of stubbornness and pride at the same time. The game is dead easy. This game gives you encounters where it simply doesn't offer you a variety of ways to deal with it. Let's get gangbanged by 8 wolves and they stagger you all the time. This sounds fun. I guess I'll just warp out and just air-juggle since they can't hit me. I know this isn't the only option available but Lmao. Seriously? This is your idea of fun? Let's use KH2 when getting swarmed by enemy. I have numerous Drive forms to use, I have numerous magic, I have summons, I have allies that actually do shit and can be customized to use certain actions. Like.. HOLY SHIT.

The combat is not good.

Ultimately at the end of the day none of this probably matters. I enjoyed the overall experience despite bad gameplay and bad story. I legit teared up in the end so I guess that means something. However, for the people who want justify that this game is good from an objective standpoint I wanted to take the time to explain why I feel so strongly in the opposite manner.

Cheers.

I preordred FF15, but had to cancel but was still able to get the amazon DLC luckily.

"Purchase of Final Fantasy XV on Amazon is required to obtain the additional Main Quest DLC."
I was just curious what was the main Quest DLC award?

Also says I got the golden Chocobo but no idea how to get it.

One last also. Why is this DLC so expensive? o_O

I'm in chapter
13
and I've been feeling underleved for a while, 36.

But there doesn't appear to anywhere to grind. Well I get an opportunity to grind a bit before this becomes to cumbersome?

I wanted to wait for the 60fps patch, but I just cannot wait. I would like to start the game but I don't want to advance far at all until the patch. Can I do some sort of exploration/farming/practicing the combat mechanics very early in the game? Like something to pass the time in the universe for a few days. Thanks!

Yes. You are underleveled but you will be given the chance to go back to the open world and level up some.

This game is the new MGSV. I have major fun with it despite itself. But man can it try to get in the way. Here's hoping they can build on it. The first time I'd be all about a direct FF sequel.

With how it ended with Noctis dying they'd have to pull some bs but dammit if I don't care lol this battle system should not stay stuck to one game

What is an objective point of view? And why do you feel inclined to write about 200x more about its negatives than its positives when you liked it?

Ardyn is not Noctis' ancestor.

Ardyn was the original Lucis Caelum, thousands of years ago. He was destined to be King. He spent his life healing people and absorbing Daemons into himself in order to protect and heal everyone. However, when it was his turn to ascend to the throne, the Crystal and the gods deemed him "unfit" for the throne due to his soul being corrupted by the Daemons he absorbed. Ardyn became immortal due to him no longer being human.

The gods and the Crystal instead chose a man named Izunia (And this Izunia dude started a smearing campaign against Ardyn, apparently). Izunia was crowned King and changed his last name to Lucis Caelum. Noctis is a descendant of this man.

Long story short: Noctis' family are not the real Lucis Caelums. They are the Izunias (Or descended from a man called Izunia). The Crystal chose them to replace Ardyn's bloodline to rule the Kingdom because Ardyn was deemed as corrupted.

His plan in FFXV is revenge against pretty much everything for shitting on him thousand years ago. He wants to fuck up the world, he wants to slay/fuck up the gods, he wants to destroy the Crystal that denied him the throne, and he wants to kill the last "True King", or the last descendant of the man who "stole the throne".

He needs Noctis to absorb the Crystal's powers, become the "One True King" and them slay him in order to destroy the Crystal and pretty much any hope of the world being recovered.

Thank you so much for explaining clearly.

I mean... I answered the second question in the beginning of the post...

As to the objective points, there are certain design and execution things in terms of gameplay that can be considered objective. Same with transitions and narrative progression and handling of plot ideas.

This was a good read and I am thankful you put so much thought and time into typing this. That said there are a few things I do disagree with, such as your viewpoint on the combat mechanics and certain story beats. For example, I personally really dig the combat and find it extremely fun and rewarding.

Again, I really enjoyed the read and respect your opinion on the game.

Edit: I want to write a more detailed response because that would lead to some interesting discussions. Unfortunately, I am writing this response on my 15 minute break and don't have a lot of time between work and commute to write long, detailed responses. I would love to talk with you more Kayos over my holiday break at the end of the month about the game.

I enjoy holding the X button and occasionally spamming parry and magic and limits. It was fun. That being said fun doesn't mean it's good design. I think that's my overall feeling of the game. I know there are bad elements but I enjoyed the game ultimately.

Also when

The more I play, the more I realize that prompto is the strongest English casted person besides Regis.

Cindy is terrible, ignis is terrible

Gladio and noctis are ok. To be honest English noctis sounds more like looks like than the Japanese dub.

It's interesting that there is no clear cut winner for which dub version to play

A prequel with Regis and his friends would be interesting to actually flesh the world out more.

That's what I was thinking. The only times I'd actually want a direct spin-off Final Fantasy game would be this idea, and the Auron, Jecht, Braska FFX prequel.

I wonder if they would do it when Regis' party was Cid, Weskham, and Clarus, or when Cor replaced Weskham.

Let's keep Weskham for some representation. :p

Stop bringing up a Gamestop exclusive!!!!!!

I also got that game for free with my game. I bought it at Gameplanet, a mexican store. So not really a full Gamestop exclusive.
