Whats the consensus so far? is hard really hard and are you guys restarting mission when playing with permadeath on or, if you lose a unit, you just go on to the next chapter?

I've only played one FE before this but hard is putting up a nice challange. I'm letting characters die, but I'm still getting a lot of mandatory restarts after main characters get piled on. This balance works for me--I still have to redo some mistakes (forces me to learn) and I get the FE guilt, variety, concequence from characters dying too.

Did they change the Luck mechanics in this game? Because if it's like previous FE games, then Luck is definitely not useless...

Getting smacked by a critical because your luck sucks will make you change your mind.

Hey, I said 'most useless,' not totally useless! Luck is the secondary stat used in determining hit and avoid. In this game only 0.5 luck is used to determine avoid. All it's really good for is negating crit%.

Although now that I think about it Res isn't that useful either, considering how rare enemy mages typically are.

Of course speaking practically a physical specialist's most useless stat is magic, and a magic specialist's most useless stat is strength.

Absolutely loving this game. But man, I need to slow my Avatar's roll. He's already lvl 10 after clearing Ch. 4. Going with SPD+/MAG- has made him a killing machine that gets double strikes with both swords and magic 90% of the time. I've also leveled Lissa to 13, she heals everything!

But Frederick is still level 1; is that okay or should I unleash him?

Stopped by my local Gamestop. No copy of the game. No idea what was going on. He received an official e-mail that he would receive display boxes for the 3ds (!) today, but no games until Friday. Seemed to indicate it was not a regional issue, but nationwide in scope. At least many parts of the nation. I'm Dallas, Texas for reference.

Super nice guy, though, and he let me pick up the art book. He had probably 7 or so before I picked mine up, but I can't say whether anybody else had gotten theirs yet.

Has anyone picked up the cartridge? No stores in my city (Mobile, al) have it yet. I've checked Target, Best Buy, Walmart, and Gamestop.

I just called my Gamestop, they have no idea when they will be getting it in. I am just going to cancel my pre-order and go eShop.

If you guys are looking for it, check Target. Before the stores opened all of them said out of stock for me, but now that they are open, about the 10 closet stores say its in stock.

I think I'm on Ch.4 just opened the Wireless features.

Fun so far. I'm still figuring things out. Can't wait until I can just open up a side battle map and expierment around with different things. Or I wish you can replay maps just to see how to do things differently.

Playing on normal and classic. Haven't had anyone die so far. So anyone perma-deaths except for Chrom and Avatar? That's really surprising. The sister character seems like she's a main character, the game would let me continue on without her or that lieuntant?

Damn it, finally decided to fight the first Spot Pass team before I begin chapter 5. They spawned in the damned arena ! Such a shit map as my team is surround. I'm trying level Sumia & Donny, but they keep getting wiped. I think I'm on my fourth restart now.

In Lissa's case, she's just heavily wounded and can't fight anymore. So, she still appears in some cutscenes, but you're never able to use her in combat again. I think that the same goes to Frederick, but I haven't tested that yet. He doesn't appear in the CGs though, unlike Lissa, so there's a higher chance he might actually die story-wise. Still, he most likely is just wounded too.

I'm not letting Fred play and parking him right there until the rest of the party catch up myself. The little bastard took all the xp on the map when I let him out.

Bench Fred until most of your units are promoted. Even if it means not reaching the character deployment cap for a level. It's what I did.

So very wrong.

Most characters, if they die, they're gone. But a few characters, like you mentioned, have critical story roles, so they'll just be out of battle, but not out of the story.

Normal is really pretty easy, even in Classic. You're just getting to get more and more powerful too and easily run over enemies. Hard is a big difference.

Unequipping his weapon should be good enough in the lower difficulties as a meatshield or as a pair up buddy.

On Hard at least, the AI won't go after unarmed units like they once did. They'll go straight for any unit they can gang up on and possibly kill. I use to love to rush my meat shield Knight / Paladin into the middle of the field unarmed, but now the enemies will walk right pass them if they have another squishy option to hit.

Any pictures of the art book yet? Can't really run out and get it right now but I'm curious.

Check Youtube. Some of the Canadians put up unboxing videos when it came out early, and I know at least one of them had some stuff on the artbook. I got mine today, small but very nicely put together. I can take (shitty) iPhone pics later if you can't find the youtube video.

D'oh - I really should have done this. Frederick takes like 1/2 of my kills, even when I'm trying to dole them out to others. Enemies attack him and he just one-shots them.

I'm at Chapter 8 (first time FE'er) and this game is just beginning to click. I'm considering restarting now that I have some of the basics under control, since I've made a lot of mistakes. I've fought that urge so far though - I'll see how I do with the mistakes I've made and finish a playthrough before restarting.

Do you guys generally pick one squad and try to level them up, or do you rotate some of the lower-leveled guys in there to try to bring them up? Should I just be maxing a single group, not spreading XP across to level everyone up? I imagine that will become impossible as my team continues to grow?

I don't think it's really necessary to bench Frederick, he can be useful as a dual/double partner for the weaker characters. Keep him in the secondary role, and that way he won't hog experience.

Frederick is a godsend on Hard (and Lunatic, he's a requirement, I'd imagine) and there is no limited pool of Exp. in this game because of Risen, Spotpass, Reclassing, and DLC. So while I wouldn't want him taking all the Exp. in the early maps, he can certainly get you out of a tight spot. Not like his growths are bad either.

I mostly settle into a handful of units that will always come along and the rest will vary depending on location and enemies. It's pretty easy to catch up units that have fallen behind with the available DLC chapter and Risen spawns. And I of course with Support / Marriage being so important, it's incentive for me to give everyone some playtime.

Yeah. There is no point stressing about having to clear a map with particular characters because you ended up in a jam, a couple of 5 minute runs of the DLC map and you are usually golden again.

I'm not sure how I feel about this... The limited EXP in FE7 (minus arena cheesing) is one of my favorite aspects of the game because it allows the entire game to be very well balanced. I don't mind the world map and extra battles too much but when difficulty just becomes a matter of how much you're willing to grind I tend to sour on a game very quickly (see: Disgaea).

Hopefully it's not that big of a deal but I don't want to have to rely on doing extra missions to get by.

You definitely don't have to grind to get by, but the option is there. It will be more challenging if you opt to ignore Spotpass battles, random Risen, reclassing and DLC. You'll probably want to stick more to a core group then, rather than spread your Exp. thin.

Yeah, that's what I tend to do in other FE's. I just hope the game is balanced to support that playstyle. I might do an extra mission here or there (definitely the ones that involve new characters) but I don't want to spend too much time on that stuff.

I would think Res would be more useless for the avatar, since you can try to avoid magic users (at least I think), but you can't avoid battles altogether.

The only extra missions considered in the main game's balance are the paralogue (gaiden) chapters. You won't need to grind before advancing in the main story or anything if you just play like a standard Fire Emblem and focus on 10 or 12 characters.

Sounds good to me. It's one of those things I'm overly paranoid about because of how much I dislike SRPG's that go crazy with the grinding and don't even attempt to balance anything but obviously I need to give Intelligent Systems more credit than that. It's not like I hate any SRPG with a means to get unlimited EXP anyway, I liked The Sacred Stones, FFT, and Tactics Ogre just fine.

Been playing for a good portion of the day, even Normal mode offers a good challenge. Love this game my favorite game in the last 6 months :)

Thanks. Just found a video, and it looks nice enough, but nothing I'm going to be too worried about if I end up not getting it for whatever reason.
