First Horizon review [Engadget]

If this game reviews and sells well, then It might encourage other devs to try out new things instead of plateauing in one genre
Maybe so, but this doesn't satisfactorily explain why there are dozens of people in the pre-release threads for every game agonizing over an 84 vs. an 87 on Metacritic. It's idiotic. I too want Horizon to be good. I want every game to be good. I want this industry to grow and flourish. But I think that fretting about Metacritic scores is an impediment to having conversations that actually matter.

Let's engage with games critically and thoughtfully, not go back and forth about their fucking Metacritic scores.

85 meta would be wonderful.
This is a new IP, always hard to get those completely right with your first go.

I'm pulling for Guerilla, they have been one of my favourite studios since I played KZ2.

Hard to guess what the meta will be. Reviews in the five point scale really pull a game down these days.

They really do because if a game is not perfect it will at most get an 8, which sometimes is not fair to a game that is just shy of being very very good. But then again, thats up to the reviewer to personally decide which way that goes, but I assume most of the time the flaws outweight the good in these cases. Thats why I prefer the 1 to 10 scale.

Scores in general

You still get the "how can X get the same score as Y" comments today

I mean, you're not exactly wrong, but you ain't about to make everyone "see the light" overnight lol

More nuance in the 10 point scale, I agree. Also a lot more negativity over silly things these days, but I suppose that's a factor of more voices with different opinions all trying to appeal to the same audience.

Either way, I think we'll see more 9s than effective 8s (including 4/5 scores) that it'll inch closer to 90.

Or everyone will be blown away and it'll get a boatload of 10s.

In the end, tough, I think I'm more interested about what this could mean for a future Killzone title.

No loading times whatsoever? Damn!

I predict a score between 0 and 1000.

You definitely get a loading screen when you die. I think it just means there's no loading screen while travelling the open world which seems pretty standard. Uncharted tier restarts would be insane for an open world game.

Mh yeah, that is pretty standard nowadays. GTA Vice City, this is not, lol.

I really should go to bed, but it's close enough that I'll try to stay up for another hour. That way I can see the reviews and some of the discussion before sleeping.

I believe the blurb is saying it does not revolutionize the genre

I read it more like "Aloy's quest redefines what immersion in an open world means, if not revolutionize the genre".
As in it is really high praise, I removed the 'it does'. If it was to be interpreted your way it really needs the word 'even' in front of 'if it does not'.

Expecting 81-83 meta.

Solid game, not without it's issues with a lot of promise and potential to iron out the problems in the sequel.
