It's roughly a 100 minute movie, with action elements, character introduction elements, and the main story.
I for one --having played FF7 enough-- am glad that they don't waste any of those precious 100 minutes (which are probably like Pixar CG standards, 1 million USD per minute) for them to re-fuckin tell the story on FF7.
In fact, I would have been more pissed off if they wasted 20 or so minutes bringing everyone up to speed. Sure, it might have made it into a better movie all for your typical non-gamer movie watcher, but for fans that's just screen-time waste. Move the story on, don't know what's going on, then play Final Fantasy VII, it's not too shabby of an RPG
I'm sure the Variety review does have merit beyond the whole "if you didn't play FF7 the game, you won't know what's going on sometimes" complaint.
Having seen Spirits Within, I'm sure I could pinpoint where Advent Children goes wrong. Lack of character expression.
But here is the free.99 fact of life, facial expressions help describe a character for every line they say, to any person.
But luckily enough, for those who played through FF7's 50 or so hour quest, know exactly how the characters act. So yes, they might not have fully mapped out/complex facial expressions, but as fans of the game, it's not that important. Because we know the character dispositions of each of these characters. Which, is probably another fault compouned on for those that are unfamiliar with the game.
So, I can see how the movie can be the super suck if you haven't played the game, you won't get the story, you won't get the character dispositions, etc.
And if you have, you're good to go.
Damage Control over.
