First screenshots of Ramza in Dissidia Final Fantasy Arcade

Ramza was pretty feminine looking in Tactics, so I guess this works.

They should have used his later Squire sprite, probably DLC. The cropped ponytail looks better in my opinion.

Wow.

FFT was dark and gritty.

I square can't do anything right anymore.

Please do tell how you'd rather the character look "dark and gritty" when they looked like this:

He looks exactly like the original. Minus the rhinoplasty.
Perhaps there's not enough blood, gore, and overly exaggerated muscles and facial hair?

Never cared much about Ramza's appearance, look at that second screen, that's a beautiful CHIRIJIRADEN! Hope the rest of his moveset is as epic as that

Yes there's not enough MAN in ramza.

Cause that's what I said (but only in your head)

I said FFT is dark and gritty, the tone of the game. This doesn't fit that at all. He looks shiny. He should look tired, worried, scruffy.

And yes you can have an androgynous character that looks scruffy. This 3D Ramza looks like someone polished him.

So chill out sport.

Edit: and yes this 2d version looks different, the colours are more muted and earthy, which do fit the tone of the game better. But it seems you can only focus on his features. Obsessed much?

looks rather different than I would have thought... his face and especially cheeks and chin are so thin and angular now.

i always imagined him with a rounder wide and pudgy face haha a bit of a well fed spoiled royal

Some things are more evident in 3D. But looking at the old art, and seeing the same pursed waist, the cape, the thigh-high boots... It's really not bad at all.

I think a lot of people use "lo-fi" graphics of old to suspend the acceptance that S.E, and many other Japanese companies, obviously like the looks they're developing for these character in higher resolutions. It's easy to extrude the emotions YOU want out of a character, when the sprites and old models were seen from far out, or suggested by a few pixels.

Do you think he'd work out better as a higher-res texture of the Rise of Mana Ramza, compared to what's shown here?

Making him a bit more soft and feminine in the face than guys like Tidus or Vaan helps give him a unique identity, when he could almost just be a palette swap of one of them otherwise. I'd love to see hy Dycedarg and Zalbag would compare to him, in this style. It'd make the way they (and others) treated him in FFT even easier to understand.

I'm sorry I had a negative reaction to the word "gritty", people tend to throw that word around out of context.
I get what you mean now but personally considering this is Dissidia, I'm not surprised characters appear prettied up, because they're no longer in the context of their own games.
Now can that be upsetting? Yeah, considering you're not really looking at the original character you liked, I see where you're coming from.

So will chosing Ramza cause every opponent to have ten black mages who kill you while doing a single step.

I haven't played FFT yet so I don't know how recurring that is. but considering the past player nods on Onion Knight and Bartz's moves, maybe the home version's story mode will add some fun interaction between him and nuke-happy Shantotto.

He looks androgynous like all the young, white characters in Final Fantasy. It's exactly how you would expect SE to render him in 3D for a Dissidia game.

He looks just as bland as the other characters.

Please don't bring race into it. They're Japanese/Asians.

Yeah I guess it is Dissidia, but it feels like they changed who he is a bit with this slick look.

If I didn't read the comments I would have never guessed that I was looking at a man.

[sarcasm]Guideline for today's japanese characters: If its a woman, it has ridiculously large breasts.[/sarcasm]

Anyway, I'm fine with androgynous looking characters. The design doesn't look bad to me.

Ugh It's not the ramza I know
Played both the original and the psp version, can't remember ramza with a cape, but a quick google image search shows it does indeed have a cape...looks better without it 8/

I'm usually mr. positivity but that's just awful. You'd have an extremely hard time convincing someone that didn't know Tactics that ramza was male based on the model.

All these people in here remembering him as anything maniler than this lol.

Watch the WotL cutscenes. He looks like a boy, not a 21 year old woman.

For a man the jawline is kinda wrong, it's too soft. I usually like SE character designs but this isn't right. You can make feminine looking man but you should still be able to recognize his sex.

Seriously, this Ramza model made me cry when I looked at myself in the mirror lol

Damn you Square Enix and Koei Tecmo! Why must you make your fictional males prettier than most girls I know in real life?

Dude looks like a lady.

Looking at the older artwork, this is one bad model. He doesn't look like himself. Maybe like the hotter sister.
