Welp, I think I've concluded that I injured a rib somehow working out yesterday. Shit keeps getting better and better for me. I assume that's gonna mean a month or so out of the gym...

Whenever I'm eating clean, PB tastes so damn good, but whenever I have a cheat day and I tell myself "now this is the day to go all out on PB! YES!", and I actually eat it it doesn't taste as good as it does when i'm eating clean. I'm pretty sure this is because on a cheat day my sweet tolerence get raised very high.

Do you guys completely eliminate white rice? I heard brown rice isn't that much different.

White rice and brown rice are pretty similar. I read around here though that white rice is better for some protein thing and paleo people say brown rice has some anti-nurtirents. Really they're both very similar so unless you're consuming huge quantities than I doubt the minute differences will make a difference.

Ok thanks.

Yes!

For the love of god, don't base your routine on what a performance artist does.

Natural Peanut Butter and regular peanut butter are not even close to the same thing.

Regular PB uses artificial ingredients (Hydrogenated oil) which is trans-fat and one of the worst things you can put into your body. It's why the oil doesn't separate in the regular artificial shit. You know, trans-fat? The shit that is so bad for you that even fast food joints stopped using it?

Natural PB >>>>>>>>>> the regular stuff I don't care how close you may THINK the ingredients are.

Agreed. The calories and such only tell half the story.

I flipped them around and looked at the labels (I said that when I posted this), the generic PB and Skippy both didn't have trans fat. Apparently not all "unnatural PB" has trans fat.

I just looked and saw hydrogenated vegetable oil on the skippy label, which is trans fat, is it not?

Not if it's fully hydrogenated, I know for a fact the generic PB I have is exactly that.

The ones with trans fat are specifically labeled as partially hydrogenated.

Edit: Some info for you and Dark.

http://www.onthetable.net/trans_tutorial.html

http://nutrition.about.com/od/askyournutritionist/f/fully_hydro.htm

Well the first article you liked is from 2004, and the 2nd you linked states that fully hydrogenated oils are rarely used in food.

I'll be honest I haven't looked at many PB labels recently (because I've been using natural for a while), but last I had checked (3-4 years ago) they all used partially hydrogenated oil aka trans fat. It is certainly possible things have changed since then but I would think I'd have heard about it by now with all the reading I do on nutrition.

The date doesn't negate what they say. Also, just because it's in peanut butter doesn't mean it would suddenly become "common in food."

There's no need to try to find some "out" here. The info is what it is. From my POV this "natural" peanut butter stuff seems like it could be nothing more than another health food cash in. Do you though, no one is trying to make you do otherwise.

Might as well fish for some opinions here.

Age: 26
Height: 6'
Weight: 197
Goal: Bulk
Type: Endomorph
Equip: Meh... the gym in my building has DBs to 70, some plate-loaded bench machines, a smith machine, and then your standard array of cables and nautilus machines. No freeweight barbells, no access to them. Hell, I don't even have an EZ bar. I make do.

Recent History:
- I did a bulk phase from 1/1/12 to 4/16, going from about 192 pounds up to 207. My routine was a modified version of the DY Blood & Guts routine, as I always liked the one set failure principle. I plateaued HARD around the middle of March on all lifts.

- 6/1 to 8/15 I did a cut, using a routine developed by a trainer friend, that mixed in the "elevate heart rate at all times" CrossFit idea into more traditional lifting (with more bodyweight stuff). Threw in some cardio, some supplementation, etc. I dropped from about 207 at the start of the cut (spend a month transitioning) to the 197 I am now.

- I took two weeks off for recuperation, and am going to spend the rest of September transitioning back into heavy lifting.

So, the question after all the above rambling: any ideas on routines for bulking, beyond me defaulting back to the Yates failure routine? I'm limited by equipment and I'm not very creative.

I've never gone out of my way regardless. I get natural myself because being diabetic, I'll always go for lower sugar. Good to know those aren't trans fats though because I love me some honey roast skippy.

Argh, struggled on squats when I tried to move from 145 -> 155 (3x5). I went 3 reps, 2 reps, then I had to go down. Fuhhh. Funny thing is my friend has been struggling with bench press but can bump up for squats and it's the other way around for me. Also funny, instead of counting out 3 on my exhale for a power clean, my voice just squeaked. So much laughter ensued and it was hard not to laugh for the remainder of the workout. One of the few cons of having a workout partner... lol

Just finished week 1 of HIML-4, I feel like a virgin all over again. I've never really adhered to a workout routine(sans p90 and even then i never followed the guide), I just make my own, gut I hit a plateu with my upper body, and this seems to be hitting areas I rarely hit.

Very attractive chick was doing squats.. you know the drill, lightest weight, maximum hotness, everyone staring at her.

One guy was deadlifting nearby, finished his set and stared at her while recovering.. big, massive dude walked over to him and started yelling at him "stop looking at my girl bro" in a very intimidating fashion.

Guy tried to defuse the situation by apologizing and walking away, the big bro didn't like that and kept shouting at the guy as he was out of sight. A few bigger guys tried to calm him down, he told them to "go fuck yourselves", a scuffle ensued, the bro was restrained and escorted out.

Fucking roid rage, it was horrible to watch this guy self destruct.

Just a heads-up, foods can still have some trans fat even if the label says 0 grams. If there is between 0 and 0.49 grams of trans fat per serving, companies are legally allowed to omit trans fat from the label or even say "0 grams"... but there could still be 0.49 grams in each of the servings.

Now, I personally don't think getting an occasional serving of 0-0.49 grams of trans fat will have any major negative effects, but it's still something a lot of people are unaware of in regards to labels. Also, you're correct that if it is "fully hydrogenated" there shouldn't, in theory, be any trans fats added through the hydrogenation process.

Anyone familiar with or use TRX? I signed up for a trial lesson at the gym today and it's my first time working with a trainer, so just trying to get a better picture as to what to expect. Is it fun? Difficult? Just want to try something different than the standard weight lifting routines I've been doing for a while now. And I like that it could be done at home where I don't have a ton of room.

I'm not trying to question the validity of the article, just pointing out that it's 8 years old and that a lot can change in 8 years especially in science & nutrition.

I'll do some research and reevaluate my peanut butter choices, but yeah I can say with certainty that 3-4 years ago nearly all PB on the market was using partially-hydrogenated oil. I know this for certain because that's when I made the switch to natural, it's also when why I stopped eating "chewy" granola bars because they too used to use it too and they would avoid listing trans-fat in the nutrition column by using an asterisk*

*Contains an insignificant amount of trans-fat.

O RLY?

I know what I'm doing to reward myself for graduating, and it's not PAX/Comicon next year.

I'm gonna go to Ohio and do one of the EFTS LTT seminars.

http://www.flexcart.com/members/elitefts/default.asp?m=PD&cid=121&pid=3734

That's not far from me.. Random place to have that event, though.

I've mentioned before that my benchpress is my weakest exercise. I maxed out on Saturday at 170, started at 135 6 weeks ago. Bodyweight is 212. So I'm getting closer. Goal is to be able to bench my body weight, and then to go beyond that. Once I get to bodyweight, either by losing the weight or lifting more, then I'm planning on treating myself to a big meal of some ribs and such. Something I wouldn't normally splurge on.

Haha, it's not random, that's where the EFTS gym is!

If you want to bench more, don't try to lose weight, it may (probably will) make it harder for you. You will get BW bench in no time, no rush bud.

Haha I'm pretty new to lifting, so I'm not super familiar with EFTS. I know of some good gyms in the area, though.

I know it's going to make my gains a lot slower, but I'm on a cut right now. So far, my beginner gains are still going. Hopefully I don't hit the wall anytime soon. I've been killing it at my workouts and been going to exhaustion of course, but I generally feel pretty decent the next day. Main thing may be that I can't do squats due to no squat rack, so I don't feel that kind of pain that most of you do.

You could clean a barbell and do front squats. Front squats by nature are lower weight than back squats and it's better than nothing. (Some would say it's better than back squats)

I may try to integrate that then. Plan is to get a squat rack fairly soon, but don't have it yet. I am doing deadlifts. They take so much out of me though, love that feeling.

Sup guys. Long time no see etc.

Quit working out since April over a bad break-up but I'm feeling it again.

Doing an home gym thing this time, I know some of you don't like it, but we'll see how it goes. Already got a barbell, dumbbells, swiss ball, pull-up bar, bench. Waiting for a rack.

Here's a quick question. I have some ON whey protein left that expired in May. It's kept in a cool and dark place. Is it 100% gone and I shouldn't even try it, or can I test it to see if it's gone bad? Worst case scenario is I get the runs? lol

Home gym > commercial gym

No wait times, easy access to food and complete privacy.

I'm not sure if it was off but I had some whey that made me feel pretty sick. I didn't throw up or anything but it was disgusting. You'll know after a sip or two if it's bad.

I know there's this poster here who messes with that. I forget his name. He was a regular, but probably been busy.

Finally got some beta alanine today. Not yet totally sure of the dosage but took some before gym and now my face tingles :p

Part of the charm, my friend. I don't remember the exact measurement but the serving size is on the back. It is like creatine in the sense that you need to take it everyday to "fill up your reserves" if that makes any sense.

Anyone who did starting strength or something similar, how well did your bench press progress?

I'm two months in and I've moved from just the bar (20kg) to 45kg total. I think my form is poor and I can't quite finish the last rep of the last set without a spotter. This and OHP are the two weakest lifts in the routine.

I am eating well. Deadlift is at 87.5kg now, deloaded squats to 50kg (from 55) get better form. (61~kg, 5' 4")
