This chart is awful. Athletic/Built are way off the scale even for most professional athletes. Hell, most athelets are closer to otter/builtfat. The Athletic/Built is not how most athletes look or would strive to look to do their sports.

Yeah. Athletes need to carry a bit more body fat to be able to keep up with their training. People forget that the shredded look comes at a big price and thus is very temporary--photo shoots, body building competitions. Thought there are genetic freaks out there

I'm back to doing IF. Man, I can barely concentrate in the morning. I'm really missing breakfast.

I think I read Chris Hemsworth (that's the guy who plays Thor, right?) said he couldn't stand the diet and exercise program by the end that he had to do for the movie.

absolutely agree, I was yesterday thinking how the word I hate the most in the fitness vocabulary is "atheltic". what the F is atheltic anyway? everyone has their one concept of that.

90% of the people that call themselves athletic don't have the body shown in that table, it's either ottermode or builtfat, maybe a bit more toned than the bodies in the table but definitely not the "atheltic" body shown there, for most people that's "muscled", period.

Well, I think this (non by the book) IF that I'm doing might be working some. I'm down to the last two spots on my EFTS belt, which is kind of worrisome since I don't want to buy a new one. It appears I'm slowly (very slowly) still losing weight but my strength keeps increasing like I'm regularly eating. Still though, this is only the second week or so of doing this, so I need to keep an eye on things.

My Rehband elbow sleeves just came in too, time to get some leg day in. MOAR SQUATZ

I don't find that accurate myself but sign me up for something inbetween ottermode and athletic. Not that I don't want to look like athletic, I just don't think I'll ever put in the work to look like that. But maybe I can accomplish something that looks a little better than ottermode.

Yeah it is extremely hard to look like that and maintain that level as well. I just don't want to put the effort to get into that mode.

I'm not one to ever scream "steroids" but "athletic", "built", "bodybuilder" and even "bear mode" all scream drugs to me. I know a lot can be done naturally, but the level of BF on those models with the relative level of muscle doesn't seem realistic to me.

I will go for a nice mix of builtfat/ottermode any day of the week.

Holy crap that is a train load of info OP.

As someone who has never really been in shape their entire life and wants to get into it some now, this is all a bit over whelming.

He's wearing the wrong shirt if you ask me, should have picked the heavy.
Haha actually I almost always wear my Heavy Sandvich shirt when I go out to clubs. My favorite part about it is the big "NEW MEAT!" on the right sleeve. Makes me feel so bad ass.

Man I have been SO MANY of the body types, lol. But yeah, awful chart.

That chart lol. What athlete is so lean the pubic bone has visible veins? Even the hardest cut wrestler usually isn't vascular like that. I think a lot of these visual guides must be put together by pre-teens. They have a skewed perception of the male physique from watching too many aspiring male models on reality TV.

take a look a these guys, there are some german swimmers and that is more or less what I am going for in the midterm.

are these guys, according to everyone's perception

.- normal?
.- fit/lean?
.- atheltic?
.- muscled? (yeah, no, but believe or not my overwieght friends, my mom and sister etc. would choose this...?!)

I am REALLY, really curious to read what fitness-GAF thinks.

"World's largest biceps". This guy, Moustafa Ismail from Egypt, claims to have the biggest biceps in the world. They have a diameter of 78,7 cm (31 inches), giving him a place in the newest Guinness Book of Records. And he says he got this way by training hard, eating tons of protein-rich food (daily intake: 1,3kg of chicken, 450g of meat or fish, 7 liters of water and 3 liters of protein shakes), having good genes (his father was a wrestler), and definitely not injecting himself with synthol (bullshit).

Guys who are in shape with a low bf%. The slim, athletic build. I think when you think of the generic lean type, you would think of this. Basically, when people want to go to the gym to attain a certain look, it is this (don't want to get too big!)

eh :) exactly, there's the trick.. slim? or atheltic?

I discussed with a group of friends and everyone except me hesitated to call these guys "atheltic"... they more or less said "fit, in shape? yes. atheltic? no, way too little muscle, both in mass and definition for that" I was like " wahhh?? what some distorted definition of atheltic do you have?? "

that's why I hate that word, it just brings out the fitness moron in everyone.

7 liters of water and 3 liters of protein shakes per day? lol

That's 2.7 gallons of liquid per day. I drink 1 gallon of water and I have to urinate like 10 times a day. If you drank that much you may as well walk around with a piss jug.

It is very hard to put a general meaning in those words. For me, an athletic build is with anyone that is involved in athletics lol. That would be swimmers, soccer players, football, basketball, mma, wrestlers, etc.

Too annoying, that's for sure. There was a thread a few months ago talking about Vin Diesel being fat and while he had some mass and bf on him, he was no where near fat. IMO anyway.

Brutal workout today, finished main work with 420X5 for deads then worked up in single rep sets to 495 before stopping, did some BBB Squats at 235x10 for 5 sets, some RDL, Front squats and finished with some rack pulls.

I'm dead.

You're doing IF now?

Yeah, but I'm not following it exactly, basically the only thing I'm really doing is the 16 off 8 on window and trying to eat most of that right after working out. Nothing else.

Haha actually I almost always wear my Heavy Sandvich shirt when I go out to clubs. My favorite part about it is the big "NEW MEAT!" on the right sleeve. Makes me feel so bad ass.

Holy fuck, if this isn't a parody I'm fucking dying over here.

"Abercombie workout"

Just a little snippit.

Are You A Victim Of Squats, Dead Lifts, And The Bench Press??

(This is the kind of body that the “Big 3″ lifts will create. You do NOT want this. Round and puffy muscles with a thick midsection doesn’t cut it for Abercrombie models)

1) Squats- Do a great job of adding a lot of mass to your thighs and butt. You do NOT want this! Abercrombie models don’t have huge butts or thighs because it will ruin their look. They also won’t be able to fit into stylish pants.

2) Dead Lifts- This lift also does an incredible job of adding mass to the midsection, thighs, and butt. Adding mass to your midsection will ruin the natural “V” in your upper body. Take a moment and study their physique. They all have nice wide shoulder that tapers down to a small and lean waist.

Note: This is why I skip direct leg work completely. If you have been lifting legs for any length of time I can almost guarantee that you have enough leg mass(probably too much already). You are NOT committing a bodybuilding crime by skipping legs! Get that out of your head. You will thank me later.

3) Traditional Bench Press: I am still a huge fan of the bench press, just not the flat bench or decline bench. These lifts focus way too much on lower pec development. You don’t want your pecs to resemble that of woman’s breasts. This is why I only recommend doing chest exercises in an inclined fashion. You want masculine square pecs. A line that goes all the way up to the collar bone is very desirable. Upper pec development will give you that angular looking chest that women love.

4) Bonus: It is also a good ideal to stray away from shrugs and upright rows. Abercrombie and Fitch models have wide and ripped shoulders. Adding mass in traps will take away from your sharp, angular, wide shoulders. This is extremely important for you as well as models to sport fashionable clothes. Count me in on the otter? team. I'd love to look "athletic," but the only way that's happening is if I get paid for it -- like most dudes that look like that.

I'm going to the gym after work today (in about 3 hours) for the first time in my life. I've got a personal trainer and I signed a 6 month contract. Wish me luck!

did anybody mention not to sign any contracts?

Not that I saw. It is a motivation for me because I'm such a flake when it comes to sticking to a routine. I figured if I thought "I pay money for this, you're not going to sit on the couch tonight" that it would help me out some.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Well I'm seeing a doctor tomorrow morning about that pain I reported a couple days ago that NOBODY COMMENTED ON THANK YOU VERY MUCH. At first I thought it was my lower rib, but now I'm thinking it might be a hernia or tear in my muscle. It's the side of my abdomen right around or below the bottom of my rib cage. I don't know what the worst diagnosis could be, but all I know is I'm probably not hitting the gym for a while. :( I just can't catch a break.

I think it may have been the leg press machine that did it.

I'm an expert

Formerly worldrevolution. The only reason I am nice to anyone else is to avoid being banned.
Welp, I think I've concluded that I injured a rib somehow working out yesterday. Shit keeps getting better and better for me. I assume that's gonna mean a month or so out of the gym...

Good job!

Ottermode is called that because it's supposed to be a typical swimmer's body, and otters are swimming mammals that aren't as fat as seals.

Damn, first time doing deads in the new gym, and all of their barbells have the really ridged surfaces for grip. Fucking DESTROYED my shins on them. I tried getting a foam roll and putting it in the middle of the bar to help protect my legs but it kept shifting and shit during my set.

Pants next time.

Yo, keep posting this delicious food porn and I'm gonna post my dinner (Chinese take out). Looks goooood man.
Very basic stuff, too.

photo3ju2n.jpg

2 cans of white chunk tuna in a bowl of: tomatoe - lettuce - beans - spinach - onions - olives. About 500 calories in total.

A while back I would decline money for such meal, now I honestly would rather have nothing else when really hungry. So satisfying.

bah, I find otters very unappealing as animals.

Why didn't society choose any other animal to label most regular guys that are into fitness/workout?

Welp, first post here.

I'm about 5'8" and around 134 pounds. Obviously I'm pretty small and over the past few weeks I've been thinking about getting more in shape. Ideally I'd be looking to put on around 10 pounds and gaining some muscle definition. At the minute the part of my body that irritates me the most is my chest, or lack of.

The main problem I have is access to a gym, I don't drive which immediately puts me at a disadvantage. The nearest gym to me is a bit of a distance and with me having to use public transport it would be difficult for me to regularly attend seeing as I work most days.

I know my Dad has a few sets of weights I could dig out and he has a bench in his garage that I could use.

Basically I'm looking for some advice on how to help achieve my goals baring in mind my current restrictions on the gym side of things. My diet is pretty poor so that's something I want to also improve, I'd have no problems in using protein shakes etc if that's why you guys recommend too.

Thanks for any advice!

I have been going to the gym for about a month now..my buddy showed me the routine he used when he first started and I'm starting to want to branch out a bit.

Beginner Routines
Full Body
I recommend this one to all beginners, but furthermore, I recommend purchasing Starting Strength (listed in the links and referenced throughout this OP). It is one of the single greatest training resources out today. It combines science AND practice, and uses concepts that have been put into work with athletes since the 70's to help novices gained muscular bodyweight and increase strength. Get your copy!

Monday
Squat - 3 sets of 5
Bench Press - 3 sets of 5
Deadlifts - 1 set of 5
Pull-Ups - 3 sets of 8-15

Wednesday
Squat - 3 sets of 5
Overhead Press - 3 sets of 5
Power Cleans - 5 sets of 3
Abdominal work

Friday
Squat - 3 sets of 5
Bench Press - 3 sets of 5
Deadlift - 1 set of 5
Bent Over Rows - 3 set of 5
Arm work, if desired

I want to try this thing out, but I'm more comfortable with dumbbells. Is this possible or will have to use bar and weights?

edit: doing some research on this...but wtf does 'snap city' mean? lol
