you also could have been leaning too far forward. i woudln't make a habit of getting neck pain though, one day it just might not go away. but yea you're probably fine for now lol
Just posting before a cheat day/2-day vacation fucks me up -- I started a few weeks ago and am 50%ish toward my goal. I'm 5-11, started at 181, now at 172.5. My goal is 162-165.
It's all protein, vegetables, and working out. But it's so much fun.
GAF, last time I did squats, my neck hurt really bad for several days. Like the spinal column part. That really scared me. The pain is gone now. I've been sick, so haven't been able to hit the weights since last thursday, and I'm kind of anxious about doing squats again. What am I doing wrong? Did I have the bar too high up on my back? I also googled it, and someone said that you should have a close grip when squatting so that way the bar rests on your traps and not your neck. But all the pictures/videos I've seen the guys have a really wide grip. I had a wide grip when I did them. I wish there was someone that could teach me in person, but I never see anyone doing squats at my gym.
Also, any dietary suggestions to go along with this would be of great help. Kinda shootin' in the dark and doing what I think is best, with some internet research and what not.
Just looking for beginner gym tips for beginning a workout method. I'm at around 210 right now, and want to end up losing about another 25-30 lbs. I'm 6'1", 23 years old (for contextual reference to my weight). Thanks for any tips!
Hmm, have to given the OP a read yet? All the information covered in those posts suit your needs. And you can find and discuss more diet information in the Weight Loss thread.
Hah, wow, now my other side is killing me...still from my Monday workout. Yeah, I think I'll take the guy's advice from the gym and start out with shorter full body workouts to reduce the strain on specific muscles, otherwise my recovery time is going to be way too long.
If you're being sarcastic, what the hell do you want from us? We're not physicians, we're just broscientists who go to the gym. Go see a doctor.
If you're just starting out, and if you do your workouts properly, your body SHOULD be sore for days after a workout regardless. You're not going to tip-toe around it (unless you half-ass your workouts.)
Well in that case I'm going to need 2-3 days rest in between starting workouts.

Well it just doesn't look great at all to be honest, haha. I'm not much of a lifter, I haven't tried using any of the freeweights, I'm mostly just using the machines because I am extremely weak. I've been doing a good 30 minutes of cardio every day now on top of a bit of strength training on the machines, I think I'm going to keep that up for a while before figuring out what my goals are.

I guess it's hard to tell when serious online. I'm not being sarcastic, i just tend to use a lot of exclamation marks. Was being serious, and thankful for those suggestions.
Yeah, that would have been a good idea, huh? haha
Thanks, I'll give the OP a good read in the morning and then check out what's going on in the weight loss thread.
Once you hit that goal, get a new one!

My gym session today was awesome. In an effort to fix my shitty Bench Press, I searched around and found this video which recommended using a resistance band to help keep the back tight while benching. Net result - 40lbs added to my 5RM, and I'm 100% sure I can do more next time, too. Really bloody happy right now.
Interesting. I have to think about this.

Some crazy weight and obesity debates on GAF lately. I'm glad this thread focuses on solutions than just mental gymnastics on why people are overweight.
Getting involved in that shit is what got me banned a few months back. Fat-gaf wants to rationalize instead of better themselves. Let them.

I don't mind helping people, but if you're gonna make excuses about how cooking fucking chicken is hard. Gimme a fucking break. Especially with all the online resources available for cooking--google, youtube, cookbooks.
Even Walmart has fresh food if you avoid the boxed crap in the aisle.
Hell yes! I should hit my cut goal in less than a month, I think. What should be my next?
Off-topic/meta: I notice a LOT of guys talking about back injuries here. What are you guys doing to yourselves?
Was looking up. Maybe my back was rounded and the bar was literally resting on my neck? Thanks for the advice. I think the fact that the pain completely went away is good, it tells me that maybe it was just some bruising and nothing major?
Now I just have to find a resistance band for cheap somewhere since our gym doesn't have any. Maybe I'll just buy a regular rubber band if I can get to a hardware store..
if you are doing a low bar squat the bar shouldn't be anywhere near your neck. if the bar is actually what caused the neck pain, then you have the bar in the wrong position. i could see a high bar squat causing neck pain but not low bar.
lol I just stay away from health related threads these days. Too much ignorance going on. I understand that there are outside factors impacting your decision and it can be difficult, especially if you have a family but that still isn't an excuse.
Flight for Vegas leaves in 5 hours.
CAN'T WAIT.
Attending EVO, I take it?
Yeah I think I'm done with both of those threads. Its one fucking excuse after another
Healthy food takes time!
It's expensive!
Having a kid means you can't cook healthy!
I'm just toooooo tired!
Yeah. Going with the GF and friends. Entering VF and chilling with some older SRK peeps.
Should be fun =)
I won't even enter them anymore. I got banned for saying that people blaming gentics were just being lazy and making excuses. Yes, there is a tiny, fraction of a fraction of people for whom that is true, but most overweight people don't want to turn down shitty food, and are unwilling to take time away from the t.v. to do some work.
Cooking chicken and veggies takes less time than getting McDonald's.

So yeah, I really want to try Starting Strength. I'm just apprehensive about telling my friends I don't want to follow their routine, since I'm the one trying to convince them to switch to the gym close to my place.
Maybe I can try to sell them on it.
But like I said, soon I'm going to have access to a full gym and I want to start using it. I don't want to bulk up, I just want to lose some more weight and lean up if I can. I'm going to start running (even though I hate running ) on the treadmills and then try and figure out a workout that's right for me.

If I want to do that full body start routine in the OP, what kind of equipment do I actually need? Like, I have no ideas about weights, I would probably just order some from Amazon.de (I'm in Germany) or something. Could you guys give me a little help with that?
Also, if someone has a site that actually shows all those things like "squats" and "dead lifts" and how you do them, that would be great!
The best place to learn about squatting and deadlifting would be from the 3rd edition of Starting Strength. There's a link to it on the OP.
Are there any gyms near you? Otherwise, you would have to buy a squat rack, bench, barbell, and plates.
Question for those fitness inclined: Is briskly walking for 30 minutes a day decent cardio to lose weight?
It's about 2 miles a day. 5 days a week.
