you also could have been leaning too far forward. i woudln't make a habit of getting neck pain though, one day it just might not go away. but yea you're probably fine for now lol

Thanks, hoping to do better next time. The amount I was squatting is like a feather for you guys too. It's just kind of discouraging that I'm possibly getting injured from really light weight. Makes lifting heavy a really daunting thought for me.

Just posting before a cheat day/2-day vacation fucks me up -- I started a few weeks ago and am 50%ish toward my goal. I'm 5-11, started at 181, now at 172.5. My goal is 162-165.

It's all protein, vegetables, and working out. But it's so much fun.

Once you hit that goal, get a new one!

GAF, last time I did squats, my neck hurt really bad for several days. Like the spinal column part. That really scared me. The pain is gone now. I've been sick, so haven't been able to hit the weights since last thursday, and I'm kind of anxious about doing squats again. What am I doing wrong? Did I have the bar too high up on my back? I also googled it, and someone said that you should have a close grip when squatting so that way the bar rests on your traps and not your neck. But all the pictures/videos I've seen the guys have a really wide grip. I had a wide grip when I did them. I wish there was someone that could teach me in person, but I never see anyone doing squats at my gym.

You probably put the bar on top of the spinal column right at the base of the neck. Put the bar slightly below that on the fleshy part of the traps. You should use as close a grip as possible because it keeps your back and traps tighter (those that use a wider grip do so because of poorer flexibility).

When you first go on a clean bulk it's expected to gain a little extra weight due to water retention right? Going straight from a (short) cut. I've put on around 1lb in 4 days and am aiming for 0.5 lb per week.

edit: on another weighting 1 hour later the change went down to 0.4 lb. I'll just wait the full week then measure

So pretty soon (as in two weeks) I'm going to have access to a full gym. I've been altering my diet for about the last 5 months or so and have been seeing some weight loss. The most exercising I have been doing is walking for an hour when I can, so not a whole lot but at least it was something. I also don't weigh myself a whole lot, so as not to be discouraged by "slow" weight loss or on any days where my weight fluctuates a little higher for whatever reason. But the last time I weighed myself, which wasn't that long ago, I calculated that since making dietary changes and altering my lifestyle here and there I have lost 10 lbs, or a little bit over.

But like I said, soon I'm going to have access to a full gym and I want to start using it. I don't want to bulk up, I just want to lose some more weight and lean up if I can. I'm going to start running (even though I hate running :p) on the treadmills and then try and figure out a workout that's right for me.

Also, any dietary suggestions to go along with this would be of great help. Kinda shootin' in the dark and doing what I think is best, with some internet research and what not.

Just looking for beginner gym tips for beginning a workout method. I'm at around 210 right now, and want to end up losing about another 25-30 lbs. I'm 6'1", 23 years old (for contextual reference to my weight). Thanks for any tips!

Hmm, have to given the OP a read yet? All the information covered in those posts suit your needs. And you can find and discuss more diet information in the Weight Loss thread.

Yeah, that would have been a good idea, huh? haha

Thanks, I'll give the OP a good read in the morning and then check out what's going on in the weight loss thread.

Hah, wow, now my other side is killing me...still from my Monday workout. Yeah, I think I'll take the guy's advice from the gym and start out with shorter full body workouts to reduce the strain on specific muscles, otherwise my recovery time is going to be way too long.

If you're just starting out, and if you do your workouts properly, your body SHOULD be sore for days after a workout regardless. You're not going to tip-toe around it (unless you half-ass your workouts.)

If you're being sarcastic, what the hell do you want from us? We're not physicians, we're just broscientists who go to the gym. Go see a doctor.

I guess it's hard to tell when serious online. I'm not being sarcastic, i just tend to use a lot of exclamation marks. Was being serious, and thankful for those suggestions.

Well in that case I'm going to need 2-3 days rest in between starting workouts.

Seems as if my back is 75% now. I did some psoas stretches this morning after waking up and also slept on my back only.

My gait is basically back to normal and there is little to no pain when twisting etc. I still have 3 days until my vacation starts so hopefully it will be near 100 percent by then.

Still salty i have to rest though. I'd rather be killing it at the gym.

Put the bar lower, keep your chestup.

Well it just doesn't look great at all to be honest, haha. I'm not much of a lifter, I haven't tried using any of the freeweights, I'm mostly just using the machines because I am extremely weak. I've been doing a good 30 minutes of cardio every day now on top of a bit of strength training on the machines, I think I'm going to keep that up for a while before figuring out what my goals are.

If you have access to barbell/dumbbells you're doing yourself a disservice by focusing on machines. Machines are great for accessory work (some), but the main work should be done with BB/DB. That said, something is better than nothing, don't rush, find your goal then work towards it.

When you're a beginner you're going to be extremely sore no matter what. Don't give up just because you're sore.

Well in that case I'm going to need 2-3 days rest in between starting workouts.

You can work through DOMS as long as it's not bad enough to impede ROM. And that doesn't mean don't do it because it's sore through the ROM. Impeding ROM means that the pain becomes far too too much while trying to maintain ROM.

I guess it's hard to tell when serious online. I'm not being sarcastic, i just tend to use a lot of exclamation marks. Was being serious, and thankful for those suggestions.

No problem, you're welcome. Also, keep the weight very light at first until you know what you can handle. Also, watch videos on how to squat/deadlift and try to get form checked. Doing these wrong will make your situation worse.

Well, we can help you out here too.

Check out some resistance training programs to keep and possibly increase muscle mass during your weight loss. This means that you'll lose more fat, you'll have a better body to show off when you hit your goal and be better prepared to stay and keep fit indefinitely.

If you hate running, try to find an alternative. The point is to keep exercising forever, so ideally you'd find something fun. Group classes, barbell complexes, calisthenics, biking, sports, rock climbing, home videos, hill sprints, run zombies, rowing, biking, swimming, with or without music. Whatever you find fun!

My gym session today was awesome. In an effort to fix my shitty Bench Press, I searched around and found this video which recommended using a resistance band to help keep the back tight while benching. Net result - 40lbs added to my 5RM, and I'm 100% sure I can do more next time, too. Really bloody happy right now.

Give it a go as soon as you can, mate. I knew my bench form was bad, but I didn't realise how bad it was until I used the band. The difference was night and day. I didn't even try benching without the band, actually - I wonder if it'll be easier now. I think I'm going to use the band for the next few workouts and then gradually phase it out.

Maybe I can try to sell them on it.

Now I just have to find a resistance band for cheap somewhere since our gym doesn't have any. Maybe I'll just buy a regular rubber band if I can get to a hardware store..

I don't mind helping people, but if you're gonna make excuses about how cooking fucking chicken is hard. Gimme a fucking break. Especially with all the online resources available for cooking--google, youtube, cookbooks.

Even Walmart has fresh food if you avoid the boxed crap in the aisle.

Pretty much, it's a cesspit of excuse making. Makes me sick.

There's that, the "society made me do it" crap, and the "you healthy guys with good genetics don't get us with bad genes" people.

Those types think everyone who works out suddenly has it easy? I'm one of those people who gets fat super fucking easy (which I also think actually helps me pack on muscle too). I work hard as fuck for what I look like/have right now. It's always a cop out with those people; anything to take the blame off their own shoulders.

Your goal can be whatever you want. Find a weakness and improve it, get better at a different area of fitness, hit a new milestone, put your fitness to use in a sport, etc.

Was looking up. Maybe my back was rounded and the bar was literally resting on my neck? Thanks for the advice. I think the fact that the pain completely went away is good, it tells me that maybe it was just some bruising and nothing major?

if you are doing a low bar squat the bar shouldn't be anywhere near your neck. if the bar is actually what caused the neck pain, then you have the bar in the wrong position. i could see a high bar squat causing neck pain but not low bar.

If you want a cheap alternative, grab some bicycle inner tubes. I heard they work well. Outside of that, I have a few Iron Woody bands which are awesome. I use them for doing band pull aparts in the morning and it has improved my posture tons. It's worth paying for a few of them - they're really useful, imo. Ebay usually has them for reasonable prices.

I won't even enter them anymore. I got banned for saying that people blaming gentics were just being lazy and making excuses. Yes, there is a tiny, fraction of a fraction of people for whom that is true, but most overweight people don't want to turn down shitty food, and are unwilling to take time away from the t.v. to do some work.

Cooking chicken and veggies takes less time than getting McDonald's.

There's three main reasons why people don't change, in my opinion.

1 - People are happy inside their comfort zones; going to the gym and trying new food pushes them outside of their comfort zone which is difficult.
2 - Society nowadays encourages us to blame our surroundings instead of taking responsibility for our actions. We can only control ourselves - we are the only constant. Too few people remember this and shift the blame elsewhere because it's much easier than admitting that they're the one at fault.
3 - People always seem to want to do things the hard way. Humans are built to run on routine, but people hardly every set their routines up to help them reach their goals.

It's a shame, really. People seem to lack ambition in general.

This seems to carry over to other parts of people's lives, too. I know so many people who are unhappy in their relationships or unhappy with their careers but they're not willing to take the action necessary to fix things. It's quite upsetting, actually.

I've said this many times before in this thread: don't talk about this stuff with normal folk. It goes way over their heads, and they think the shit they see in the movies is what we do in real life. You can offer a few suggestions, but really, just nod, grin, and carry on. Achieving your goals is hard enough without trying to drag along someone else.

Furthermore, when you have someone who thinks that life is a sponge which you squeeze the maximum amount of pleasure from before it dries up, conversations about the long term don't go very well.

Okay, I would recommend eating a clean-ish diet ( I hate that phrase) and just doing the OP program or Starting strength or Lascek's S/C program. There are links in the OP about diet.

Oh yeah, someone was complaining about pain from the bar during the squat. Here, watch this: http://startingstrength.com/index.php/site/video/platform_the_squat_bar_position

Also, if someone has a site that actually shows all those things like "squats" and "dead lifts" and how you do them, that would be great!

The best place to learn about squatting and deadlifting would be from the 3rd edition of Starting Strength. There's a link to it on the OP.

Are there any gyms near you? Otherwise, you would have to buy a squat rack, bench, barbell, and plates.

Sure, there's a gym like 5 minutes away.
I'm more comfortable in my own home though, can train without caring about how I look/what i'm wearing and I won't have to pay a monthly fee if I do it at home.
And I of course can do it whenever and don't have to care about opening times/other people occupying the stuff I need.

What I'm saying is I really don't like people.

I'm sick of this gut I have. Starting to make an effort to clean up the food I eat. Not a strict diet, per se, just consciously eating more healthy foods rather than the junk I used to eat. I'm also going to try my hardest to not stuff my face until I can't take another bite. I'll eat until I'm content and then stop.

Is this how most of you guys eat?

It's better than nothing, but losing weight is more dependent on what you're putting in your face. And you haven't given us any info on that.
