Signed up with GoodLife Fitness (Canadian gym).
Trainer there trying to talk me into 3 or 6 intro sessions ($120/$220 respectively). Worth it? Not worth it?
I want to generally be healthier. I could stand to lose a few pounds (10-15) and some fat, but really right now I just want to get active and get off the couch. I feel like before I set any huge goals for myself I should probably get myself to an average level of fitness.

18% is a good cut off point for the milk. How have you been progressing?
So I'm just finishing up Insanity this week, man I hate this shit, really does a number on your joints. Anything I can take to alleviate this? I'm not in pain or anything, but the mornings in particular I can hear the slight popping and it's a little disconcerting. It doesn't help that I've been running every morning since late April. Maybe I need to take a week off from running as well when I'm done with insanity this weekend. I just recently started taking fish oil as a doctor suggested to me(it's for something unrelated). Thoughts on insanity and joints?
The "guy" at the gym was of the opinion that since I haven't really worked out at all, starting with something like the beginner workout described in the OP would be too strenuous and not leave enough room for recovery. Opinions?
Yeah he didn't know what it was. =\
Maybe I'll pick up Starting Strength on Kindle, read through, and decide for myself.
If I were to do a few weeks with machines and whatnot just to accustom/build my base muscles and reduce the risk of injury, would that be fine?
God I really fucked up my lower back. I feel like a total idiot for this. Would have been fine after my trip but now I am going to be hobbling around at the resort.
I'm really beating myself up about this. Should have just waited a day to do my normal routine.
Don't use machines unless it's accessory work. (my opinion)
Just start light, that will get you accustomed and build your base.
Alright.
Another question that I hadn't thought of...I am starting the routine now but at the end of the month I'm going on vacation for 2 weeks. Is that going to completely destroy all the work I'll do this month?

You can custom set your own macros.
I have my at 50p/30c/20f ... just got into the settings tab and customize that stuff.
Their calcs are off if you let it go on its own.
I'm CrankyJay on there btw if anyone is looking for food ideas for macros or whatever, friend me up if you want. Ignore the Sunday night meal of 2300cals, lol.
Alright.

I'm in need of serious help...for my lower back. Are there any good exercises you all recommend? It's been killing me for the past year or so; standing up - for not even that long and I feel a pain where I either need to take an Advil, stretch, sit down etc.
I'm in good shape; 24 years old, between 6'-6'1'', 150-155 lbs, low body fat, hit the gym regularly 2-4 times a week. Sometimes I wake up and my lower back is in serious pain making it very difficult for me to even think about going to thy gym.
Does anyone else experience/has experienced something of the sort? It totally kills my moods because many of the times all I can keep my mind on is the burning pain.

The most work you need to do at the moment is educating yourself with the links and books listed in the OP. You have much nonsense to unlearn.
1. You're not in good shape if you have horrible back pain. And you're far too light for your height.
2. How has this gone on a year without going to a doctor?
3. Try looking up Mwod for some good stretches.
I guess having a dad as a doctor is both a good and bad thing; good when you need a quick diagnosis, but seeing as he's super passive, all he continually tells me to do is stretch. It's complete bullshit. Obviously now I'm as pissed as I can be towards him and am looking at finding a physiotherapist and/or chiropractor.
I have been given numerous back exercises to do and nothing seems to help. X-rays have been done and nothing abnormal...
Just hoping to see if anyone else has had similar experiences with back pains and have found a solution?
Used to get back pain. I made an appointment with Dr. Squat and his assistant, Nurse Deadlift and it's all in the past.
Never thought about that! I'll hit the gym tomorrow and try doing those exercises to see what happens. Thanks!

Actually, here's a question that will help me figure out a goal.
I'm 5'5" and I used to weigh 130lbs for the longest time. I just recently stepped on a scale again and it looks like I went up to 138lbs in the past few months. It's still within my healthy weight range though. I could go down to probably 120lbs and still be at a healthy weight, but at the moment I have little to no muscle. Should I be looking to or expecting to lose weight, or should I be instead trying to maintain and build up some muscle mass?

How old are you like 12 and or a girl?
If you are 16 or older I'd try and get some mucle and not be a tiny wuss.
Shogun is 5'8", 240lbs iirc and the dude looks good cause a large part of that weight is muscle. You need to eat, lift, and not worry about the scale.

Does anyone know what the best equivalent of Noom on the app store? I want an exercise app to count calories, record exercise routines and the ability to track where and how fast I bike/walk.
No suggestions?
What the fuck? Are you serious? How is that going to encourage people to work out if you're just going to berate them for not being muscular enough? There's no reason for that shit.

I was just worried because I was putting on a little extra fat. I'll keep this in mind though, thanks.
This is why BMI is shit and should be banned. There's like what, 6 different body types? Each person holds fat differently.but yeah, there's people my weight at my height that look nothing like me, even at 246. Appreciate the compliment btw.
MyFitnessPal, although very good, doesn't have GPS tracking. Maybe I should look for a separate app and move the calories burned over.people were talking about MyFitnessPal a page ago, you could look that up
the nike+ thing might work too
GAF, last time I did squats, my neck hurt really bad for several days. Like the spinal column part. That really scared me. The pain is gone now. I've been sick, so haven't been able to hit the weights since last thursday, and I'm kind of anxious about doing squats again. What am I doing wrong? Did I have the bar too high up on my back? I also googled it, and someone said that you should have a close grip when squatting so that way the bar rests on your traps and not your neck. But all the pictures/videos I've seen the guys have a really wide grip. I had a wide grip when I did them. I wish there was someone that could teach me in person, but I never see anyone doing squats at my gym.

Don't worry about "a little" extra fat, worry about "a lot" of extra fat. As long as you're not taking shortcuts you shouldn't have a problem. And don't make the mistake a lot of lifters make (myself included), conditioning is important, be sure to do some type of intense cardio in addition to your training.
Well it just doesn't look great at all to be honest, haha. I'm not much of a lifter, I haven't tried using any of the freeweights, I'm mostly just using the machines because I am extremely weak. I've been doing a good 30 minutes of cardio every day now on top of a bit of strength training on the machines, I think I'm going to keep that up for a while before figuring out what my goals are.

hmm i'm not sure about the neck pain. could just be weak? someone posted a video (can't remember what but i think it was called "So you think you can squat?") and you are supposed to keep your head looking up. try that. maybe you need to have your neck flexed.
as for the arms, i have to put mine wide because i'm not flexible enough (at least i wasn't when i started) to put them close to my body, and i still rest the bar on my traps. just get it in a comfortable position, and keep in mind that at higher weights you're going to feel discomfort no matter what. but you get used to it.
Was looking up. Maybe my back was rounded and the bar was literally resting on my neck? Thanks for the advice. I think the fact that the pain completely went away is good, it tells me that maybe it was just some bruising and nothing major?
