Signed up with GoodLife Fitness (Canadian gym).

Trainer there trying to talk me into 3 or 6 intro sessions ($120/$220 respectively). Worth it? Not worth it?

Always look up the credentials of a trainer before signing up. As a general rule, most trainers don't have a degree in exercise science nor do they actually study biomechanics. Many of them just want you to remain the gym and pay them, regardless of if you make progress or not. Not all of them are bad, however many aren't worth it.

I want to generally be healthier. I could stand to lose a few pounds (10-15) and some fat, but really right now I just want to get active and get off the couch. I feel like before I set any huge goals for myself I should probably get myself to an average level of fitness.

You don't understand what you are saying. I can tell because

1. Losing a few pounds and some fat would mean losing some muscle and fat. Generally, you want to keep muscle.

2. Being active and getting of the couch can mean anything. It could mean going out and fighting the homeless at night while dressed in a black leather jacket. It could be mean walking down the store to get another six pack.

3. Average level of fitness before setting huge goals? What huge goals? What's average level of fitness? Why do they need to be "huge goals"? What is fitness? There's no way of knowing, no system to keep yourself honest.

So I'm just finishing up Insanity this week, man I hate this shit, really does a number on your joints. Anything I can take to alleviate this? I'm not in pain or anything, but the mornings in particular I can hear the slight popping and it's a little disconcerting. It doesn't help that I've been running every morning since late April. Maybe I need to take a week off from running as well when I'm done with insanity this weekend. I just recently started taking fish oil as a doctor suggested to me(it's for something unrelated). Thoughts on insanity and joints?

18% is a good cut off point for the milk. How have you been progressing?

After two weeks I don't see much gain, although I think I gained around 3-5 pounds. My biceps may be slightly larger, but still pretty much the same; I don't get sore anymore and am definitely getting stronger, albeit very slowly lol. I need to start taking weekly pics, I guess I'll snap one at the end of the month then go weekly every other week from there.

So keep milk to 1 or 2 cups max a day?

On a worse note, my liver enzymes keep shooting up and the doctors think it may be related to the supplement the gym offers (told me never to take supplements, as they are unregulated). However, I stopped the supplement, and my liver enzymes still were going up in a recent blood test; so I'm hoping it's nothing diet related. Going to cut out eggs/bacon everyday in favor of oatmeal/cereal.

Insanity is not good for your joints. Too much high impact. Joints unfortunately don't adapt much; if they're hurting, it's because you've damaged them.

Personally I'd stay away, or use a lower impact version if possible.

Does anyone know what the best equivalent of Noom on the app store? I want an exercise app to count calories, record exercise routines and the ability to track where and how fast I bike/walk.

I'm in need of serious help...for my lower back. Are there any good exercises you all recommend? It's been killing me for the past year or so; standing up - for not even that long and I feel a pain where I either need to take an Advil, stretch, sit down etc.

I'm in good shape; 24 years old, between 6'-6'1'', 150-155 lbs, low body fat, hit the gym regularly 2-4 times a week. Sometimes I wake up and my lower back is in serious pain making it very difficult for me to even think about going to thy gym.

Does anyone else experience/has experienced something of the sort? It totally kills my moods because many of the times all I can keep my mind on is the burning pain.

God I really fucked up my lower back. I feel like a total idiot for this. Would have been fine after my trip but now I am going to be hobbling around at the resort.

I'm really beating myself up about this. Should have just waited a day to do my normal routine.

The "guy" at the gym was of the opinion that since I haven't really worked out at all, starting with something like the beginner workout described in the OP would be too strenuous and not leave enough room for recovery. He says it'll result in quick gains but plateau very quickly. Opinions?

Were you doing Starting Strength?

Did you tell the guy it was "Starting Strength?"

Did he know what it was?

Yeah he didn't know what it was. =\

Maybe I'll pick up Starting Strength on Kindle, read through, and decide for myself.

If I were to do a few weeks with machines and whatnot just to accustom/build my base muscles and reduce the risk of injury, would that be fine?

Don't use machines unless it's accessory work. (my opinion)

Just start light, that will get you accustomed and build your base.

Sorry to hear that man. Being hurt before a vacation is terrible.

Alright.

Another question that I hadn't thought of...I am starting the routine now but at the end of the month I'm going on vacation for 2 weeks. Is that going to completely destroy all the work I'll do this month?

No, especially since 1 month is nothing in the grand scheme of things, especially since you're just now starting out.

I jumped into a lot of different workouts from like years of inactivity (like yourself). Similarly, I thought I was going too hard or what not... but honestly it's just the first week of your body getting shocked. By the 2nd week the soreness and stiffness is gone, and you realize your arms aren't going to fall off lol. A light jog helped me a lot when I was super sore. And make sure to stretch thoroughly before and after working out (something I neglected).

You can custom set your own macros.

I have my at 50p/30c/20f ... just got into the settings tab and customize that stuff.

Their calcs are off if you let it go on its own.

I'm CrankyJay on there btw if anyone is looking for food ideas for macros or whatever, friend me up if you want. Ignore the Sunday night meal of 2300cals, lol.

I have no idea where you set these macros still, could you explain it some more?

The most work you need to do at the moment is educating yourself with the links and books listed in the OP. You have much nonsense to unlearn.

1. You're not in good shape if you have horrible back pain. And you're far too light for your height.

2. How has this gone on a year without going to a doctor?

3. Try looking up Mwod for some good stretches.

Have you tried doing light (LIGHT) squats to try to strengthen your core? Your pain might be a result of weakness and imbalance*

*Talk to your goddamn doctor.

I guess having a dad as a doctor is both a good and bad thing; good when you need a quick diagnosis, but seeing as he's super passive, all he continually tells me to do is stretch. It's complete bullshit. Obviously now I'm as pissed as I can be towards him and am looking at finding a physiotherapist and/or chiropractor.
I have been given numerous back exercises to do and nothing seems to help. X-rays have been done and nothing abnormal...

Just hoping to see if anyone else has had similar experiences with back pains and have found a solution?

Used to get back pain. I made an appointment with Dr. Squat and his assistant, Nurse Deadlift and it's all in the past.

Actually, here's a question that will help me figure out a goal.

I'm 5'5" and I used to weigh 130lbs for the longest time. I just recently stepped on a scale again and it looks like I went up to 138lbs in the past few months. It's still within my healthy weight range though. I could go down to probably 120lbs and still be at a healthy weight, but at the moment I have little to no muscle. Should I be looking to or expecting to lose weight, or should I be instead trying to maintain and build up some muscle mass?

How old are you like 12 and or a girl?

If you are 16 or older I'd try and get some mucle and not be a tiny wuss.

Shogun is 5'8", 240lbs iirc and the dude looks good cause a large part of that weight is muscle. You need to eat, lift, and not worry about the scale.

I'm a small dude with a small frame. Thanks for the advice bro.

I was just worried because I was putting on a little extra fat. I'll keep this in mind though, thanks.

What the fuck? Are you serious? How is that going to encourage people to work out if you're just going to berate them for not being muscular enough? There's no reason for that shit.

You're right, his comment was completely uncalled for.

That said, what kyle said is on point. My "ideal weight" is 170, and I hit that at the end of Infantry basic training (Army) And I was skinny with nearly no muscle. It looked like shit. Some people look different at different weight, but ultimately you need to lift heavy weight, condition yourself (cardio) and eat right. Fuck the scale, only use it to ensure you're on the right track, don't use it as an indicator of success because it WILL fluctuate.

Around 233-235 right now at 5'8" (246 at my heaviest while contributing/interacting with this thread) but yeah, there's people my weight at my height that look nothing like me, even at 246. Appreciate the compliment btw.

I look forward to posting my end of the month picture this month after I'm done with this cut.

Don't worry about "a little" extra fat, worry about "a lot" of extra fat. As long as you're not taking shortcuts you shouldn't have a problem. And don't make the mistake a lot of lifters make (myself included), conditioning is important, be sure to do some type of intense cardio in addition to your training.

GAF, last time I did squats, my neck hurt really bad for several days. Like the spinal column part. That really scared me. The pain is gone now. I've been sick, so haven't been able to hit the weights since last thursday, and I'm kind of anxious about doing squats again. What am I doing wrong? Did I have the bar too high up on my back? I also googled it, and someone said that you should have a close grip when squatting so that way the bar rests on your traps and not your neck. But all the pictures/videos I've seen the guys have a really wide grip. I had a wide grip when I did them. I wish there was someone that could teach me in person, but I never see anyone doing squats at my gym.

hmm i'm not sure about the neck pain. could just be weak? someone posted a video (can't remember what but i think it was called "So you think you can squat?") and you are supposed to keep your head looking up. try that. maybe you need to have your neck flexed.

as for the arms, i have to put mine wide because i'm not flexible enough (at least i wasn't when i started) to put them close to my body, and i still rest the bar on my traps. just get it in a comfortable position, and keep in mind that at higher weights you're going to feel discomfort no matter what. but you get used to it.

Well it just doesn't look great at all to be honest, haha. I'm not much of a lifter, I haven't tried using any of the freeweights, I'm mostly just using the machines because I am extremely weak. I've been doing a good 30 minutes of cardio every day now on top of a bit of strength training on the machines, I think I'm going to keep that up for a while before figuring out what my goals are.

can you bench/squat/ohp/deadlift the bar? start with that, no one (they shouldn't be , anyways, and if they are, they're a prick) judges you.

also i bet if you started tomorrow you could bench the bar, ohp the bar, squat 120 and deadlift 135

edit: oh shit but dont do all that in one day LOL

Free-weights are the way to go. Also, you may be weak now, but everyone has to start somewhere. Just try to do 2 mucsle groups a day like:

-chest/shoulders
-upper/lower back
-legs
-arms

Something like that. Try to go heavy as you can without sacrificing your form, try to go with like 8 reps each time, and 3 sets. Maybe 3 or 4 exercises for each muscle group. Others can likely go more in-depth and explain better.

Was looking up. Maybe my back was rounded and the bar was literally resting on my neck? Thanks for the advice. I think the fact that the pain completely went away is good, it tells me that maybe it was just some bruising and nothing major?

Just posting before a cheat day/2-day vacation fucks me up -- I started a few weeks ago and am 50%ish toward my goal. I'm 5-11, started at 181, now at 172.5. My goal is 162-165.

It's all protein, vegetables, and working out. But it's so much fun.
