I've now come to conclusion that it's better to leave a rep or two in the tank with every set but the last while doing bodyweight stuff like dips or chin-ups. I've been able to do a lot more volume-wise now that I don't go to failure with every set. Did 51 dips (10 sets) today after benching.

I guess this is obvious to some people but better late than never I guess :p

How big of a difference is there between the regular bench press and bumbell presses? I guess i already know the answer (a big difference) but i feel more comforatble with the dumbell ones and i can feel it working my chest more. I've been trying to switch it up and do them occasionally. I still do regular bench press twice a week though.

When I was doing the beachbody dvds to lose fat, they had that Shakeology ad all over their videos, today I finally tried it, the chocolate flavored one, with skimmed milk, a banana and a spoon of peanut butter, and it tastes heavenly. By far the best chocolate smoothie I've ever had, healthy or junk.

I'm not sure if it's as healthy as advertised but it tastes ridiculously good.

And my hamstring is worse. Took a week off of squats and deads to heal but this morning I can feel the muscle sticking up between the area of of my upper leg and ass. This sucks! I have a race in two weeks!

After running my 5k I had terrible shin splints. I'm hoping its a matter of strengthening the calf muscles but I also wanted to make sure I had good shoes. Are running shoes from your local mall good enough? Do you get what you pay for? I always loved the Nike Shox running shoes but I wouldn't ever pay 100+ for a shoe. But if it benefits me I could possibly tolerate such a price tag.

Is planet fitness really as bad as I've read and heard? I really really wanna get fit and there's a planet fitness 5 mins away from where I live but I don't wanna join a gym where they don't even have squat racks and don't allow you to deadlift. Hell, from what I've read you can't do half the basic things listed in the OP due to their bizarre/stupid policies. The only time in the day I can work out is in the early mornings (5AM-8AM). There's also a 24 hour fitness gym not too far away but finding parking can be a real pain in the ass. What should I do GAF?

I wear mizunos for my shin splints.

What's usually on top?

Back and shoulders are always at the top of the list.

Then usually arms.

Chest coming in right behind that.

Followed by abs and legs.

Basically, women care about the areas they are likely to actually see and touch, hence back/shoulders on top.

MEN care about abs. It's like women with designer purses, they wear them to impress other women.

Yes it's horrible from what I've heard. You can't bang weights on the floor (like if you are doing dead lifts), grunt, etc. They don't want to attract the body builder types.

Yes, it is really that bad. They really do have an alarm if you are being too loud. Their dumbbell weights stop at a pretty low weight, can't deadlift, no squat racks, etc.

I thought it'd be the obvious choice due to it's prices and convenience but I go to the gym to go hard and max out. 24 hour fitness seems legit but their prices a little out of my range at the moment -_-

It's not a real gym at all. It caters to fat women. They even have free donut day and free pizza day....srs.

24 hour fitness is actually decent. I much prefer Gold's if you have a decent one around you.

This.

While Gold's has strayed from where it was back in the Arnold days, I've never had an issue with using chalk, they have solid equipment, and normally the facilities are kept up pretty nicely.

24 hour fitness isn't Gold's gym nice, but it's normally cheaper and, if your receptionist is cool, they're not have an issue with you using chalk. Just clean up.

Some choice tidbits.

http://ancestralmomentum.com/2012/07/health-and-fitness-roi-for-the-average-guy/

High Intensity Interval Resistance Training (HIIRT). I have this, the basis of my overarching exercise plan, listed first for a reason — and that is that we, as a species, were first and foremost physical beings, while being, secondly (and a distant “secondly” at that) opportunistic eaters so as to support that physicality. And yes, it this type of exercise is not in any way, shape or form, meant to be comfortable — it should “HIIRT” on a physical, mental and spiritual level In all seriousness, one has to lay it on the line in these sessions. And this is where intelligent programming is an absolute necessity. Because while intensity is key, the programming has to be such that a client will not risk injury due to the performance of a highly technical exercise under duress/fatigue. Bang for the buck? A mere two, 30-minute sessions per week. Cha-ching!...

...Soft Tissue maintenance. Do you have a foam roller? Awesome. Do you use that same roller…DAILY? This has been this single most important recovery tool in my arsenal, and is a major reason why I’ve been able to stay as intensely active as I have been for so very long.

...Sleep. I had a football coach at one point during my career who was, following a particularly arduous week of training, fond of saying “the fat’s in the fire” — meaning that we’d done all the prep work we could do, did it to the best of our ability, and so now it was time to rest well prior to kick-off. You can (and I do) go all-out ball-busters during my waking hours. But when it’s time to call it a day, you’ve got to put on the brakes, tune-out the world, and pull-off a night-long mini-hibernation. Overtraining is not a concern for the 99%; under-recovery among the masses, though, is rampant.

He also practices what he preaches at 50 years plus

So effing true, the gay world has this silly love for abs. When I was a little less ripped, people actually asked me if I had a nice six pack, constantly... shit is dumb.

But maybe I was just mad cause mine weren't defined enough. I dunno, I have them now and I still don't really care.

Max

I am not Max
Age: 20
Height: 6'
Weight: 145
Goal: 200? I'm unsure

Current Training Schedule: 4 days a week
separate routines; back/bi, shoulders/tri, legs, and chest

Current Training Equipment Available: Possibly everything needed for someone at my stage, free weights, squat deck, a bunch of machines, other things I don't know the name of

Comments: So fitGAF, i'm tryna get tough. I've been going to the gym almost 2 months now for 4-5 days a week doing routines with a good friend I have who is helping me out with things. We write down our sets and reps for each routine day. Usually I am doing 12/10/8 for 3 sets increasing the weight by 5 for each, if possible.

There is one problem I am having, I'm tired of having to rely on whether the friend I'm training with is going to the gym or not, sometimes he says hes too tired from hiking that day, or sometimes he just goes too late in the night for me.

Another problem I'm having is what he's telling me to eat, I need more info from other people. For the first month I was having whole milk, as well as 2% cottage cheese for the casein protein. He had recommended I have that to apply fat. Speaking with a co-worker I had heard the COMPLETE opposite of what my mindset should be, I should be gaining weight with proteins and good carbs, not whole fats.

Right now I switched to 1% milk and skim cottage cheese, I put quite a bit of honey into my oatmeal, I've been eating protein bars that I find on sale for around a dollar each, and I am looking into purchasing a tub of protein powder. This and this were recommended by friends, but the amount of options is overwhelming.

The 3 day routine in the OP seems like something I should be doing. I want to build muscle more than anything, and I want to be able to go to the gym myself and memorize routines.

A question about the beginner routine as well as in general; How am I to manage what weight I'm lifting, if it is too hard do I go down and then increase reps?

Thanks for any help

Unless you're in doing BB shows or a fitness model, abs seem pointless to me. Glad to have you back on beastmode.

Feels good to be back. Taking next week off and still eating sloppy but will tone it down a bit. I'm ready to hop back in the gym but these days off feel great and I know my body appreciates it as well.

BEASTMODE

Visible abs have their perks; the ladies like them.

Back and shoulders are always at the top of the list.

My girl is a fan of big arms so for this bulk, I want to put a bit more focus on that haha. Still, my main priority will be a big chest and wide shoulders. Arms, lats and traps followed by just a bigger lower body. Gonna go full power/strength until next year where I want to transition into a traditional BB split for a few months.

My thoughts now, anyway.

So effing true, the gay world has this silly love for abs. When I was a little less ripped, people actually asked me if I had a nice six pack, constantly... shit is dumb.

I can see that and yeah, I do think that guys care more about abs than anything. That's not to say that the ladies don't appreciate it but from my experience, it has been chest and arms over everything else.

Lol I can guarantee you women will like to have all of that on a man. Just because one area is "preferred" doesn't mean it's the only important one.

Plus not all women are the same. So if you're going for an aesthetic to impress women, you have to work out EVERYTHING.

Also, purely anecdotal, but all the girls I know LOVE abs. Arms+Abs have been the two most preferred in my experiences.

First time in this thread.

I watched a YouTube video this morning about 'afterburn' training, where you do short burst workouts for 30 minutes or so. The effect is that you continue burning calories and fat for up to 48 hours after your workout.

The guy said it is much more effective than traditional cardio or weight lifting. Anyone have any experience with this type of training?

Depending on your goals, if it is only weight loss/fat loss for now, that "afterburn" training is HIIT.

High intensity interval training is when do a short burst of INTENSE training, then a longer burst of medium intensity training; so for example, you sprint for 30 seconds, jog for 1:30, and do that cycle 5-10 times, depending on your fitness level. It will leave you completely battered by the end of it, and the whole point is to keep your heart rate up. I don't recommend doing it more than 3 times a week.

It is better for fat loss than long distance cardio at a slow pace, because that type of running will eat away at muscle as well along with fat.

If you want to build muscle, then you need to pick up the weights. If your goal is weight gain, then you will gain some fat as well; but overall your body will start to take a more muscular shape.

If your goal is weight loss, then I would say combining HIIT and the beginner routines (starting strength weight lifting) in the OP are the best way to go.

Edit: But really you should specify what your goals are and your body dimensions to start off.

Great info ty.

In the video he seemed to be combining the HIIT with some sort of weight training. Which would seem to be ideal for me.

I'd like to lose 20-30 lbs and also put on a little muscle.

Edit - Body dimensions are 5'10", 200 lbs roughly

Anecdotal evidence doesn't hold water next to actual studies on the subject.

I'm not saying not to work those abs, just that if you are sacrificing other areas to get that fabled six-pack, you're doing it wrong.

On that note, I'm down to under 180lbs on my cut, but just pulled 365x5 on my deads, officially putting me in the 2x bodyweight category. I could not be more stoked right now.

Oh of course, there is no choice over the other as everyone is different. What annoys me is that I would have people asking me to see my abs and when I tell them I don't have any or show them, they are disappointed. Sorry, just because I'm a big guy doesn't mean my abs are ripped.

Uh yeah, that's why I said it was anecdotal. You can't peg every woman according to the what the studies say either, they are all different when it comes to aesthetic preferences.

Also I want to actually see this study it seems interesting, link?

So generally you won't build muscle if you are losing fat, as you need to eat at a surplus to gain muscle; and eating at a surplus won't get you to LOSE weight, obviously.

But I do recommend that you do the beginner weight training routines in the OP (starting strength 3x a week) and do HIIT once a week. Heavy lifting burns fat very well, along with cardio.

This will shape you up nicely; especially if you have some muscle under that fat anyway. So once you get down to your desired fat levels, you can begin to bulk again.

read the OP for a plethora of great information, and if you still have questions please ask!

It's a bunch of different studies and surveys I've read over the years, all pointing to the same conclusion. Obviously all women are different, but based on the data, you'll have the best luck attracting women with shoulders and back muscles. It's about the greatest chances, not making sure you can attract every woman. That's impossible.

I'll look for some links though.

Of course you get what you pay for, that's why any (properly researched) shoe over $100 is a great investment. Same with a $200 pair of jeans..sure you can get a pair from Gap for $20..but it's just not the same. That doesn't mean there aren't quality products below that price range though. I personally suggest the Nike Lunar series (specifically Montreals) for running. They're extremely light and durable and their price tags aren't too unreasonable. I also suggest buying any athletic gear from the brand's outlet stores as the prices are much better and there really aren't any "seasons of style" when it comes to athletic stuff as there are to fashion.

I intend to start lifting in the coming week, however I intend to cut initially rather than bulk as I am sick of being a fat guy, I know the usual protocol is to bulk and then cut but my body shape is really getting me down. Is it a bad idea for a total newbie lifter to be lifting on a calorie deficit?

It won't really matter. Don't starve yourself though. Eat a reasonable diet. Meat and veggies. Drink your milk.
