Where are you working out currently? Can you afford $10-$20/month for a gym membership?

My workout gym is the one on-site at my apartment complex.

I would only likely be able to go to a gym membership place MAYBE twice a week, if at all. I don't think the extra expenditure is worth only two days. Plus I haven't even looked at gym memberships around here to find out in the first place. So there's that.

Fair enough. Your call.

Unfortunately I wish I could go to a place that has a bar to do all these fancy workouts, but I can't. I have barely enough time as it is, between my work and life at home.

To be a bit frank here, you don't even know the name of the machines you're working out on. I'm impressed and jealous you're confident enough to make such a statement, but I think you need to take a step back and leave your ego at the door. We're trying to help you. If you're able to find a better gym, do it, because the stuff and program you're on right now is not going to get you towards your goals.

I welcome the help, and am glad we could even discuss in the first place. A lot of conversations in this thread feel like insular conversations between specific people, and I'm happy my weirdass workout warranted responses, haha. I'm always looking for advice.

Is it possible even if my current stuff and program won't get me towards my goals directly, but indirectly? I feel the changes even after a month of my intense workout, ie bigger pecs, less body fat, stronger arm muscles, etc.

And the machine names... yeah that's my bad for not learning them.

Edit: Oh shit we need a new thread!

Basically all I want to do is make the muscles on my forearm and upper arm get bigger, somewhat, as well as tone my chest and stomach. My legs are okay to get toned and/or bigger as well.

The machines I have at my disposal:

Arm curl thing
Benchpress Machine
Lateral press & Combo rowing machine
That one machine that works out your pecs
Forward crunch curl thing?
Leg lift machine?

I have no way to do any compound exercises. I don't have a gym membership because I believe I can get the workout I need from my gym, as well as I have no way to get to the gym when I need to (and don't have time).

And some step machines for Cardio.

I have these goals and I want some advice on how to achieve them.

But first! A series of conditions that will greatly impair my chances for success!

Go.

Anyway, some advice? Burn out spinning your wheels doing circuit machines and come back when you find enough time to do effective exercises.

The struggle is real!

Edit: I'm jealous of Mully and the others because they have access to the things they need to get a proper workout.

Burning out is impossible, I'm confident in what I'm doing is working. Exactly how, I can't say. But I can see it, and I can feel it.

^ If you are comfortable with your program stick to it. But don't do 50 reps of anything, you have to increase the weights. If you can't, either you are doing it wrong or the exercise is worthless.

So, the thread goes on. 20000 posts is just an artificial limit then? Let's get to 100,000!

Holy hell you guys.

Doritos Locos Cool Ranch Spicy Chicken Tacos.

200 calories a pop (for supreme.... regular is 170). 20 grams of protein. Only 14 grams of carbs. Super inexpensive.

I'm not saying you should live on them, but if you're on a cut and you get a craving for something 'unhealthy', they are the perfect go-to food as far as I can tell. Two will usually be enough to fill you up.

If god were a food, it would be these things.

Always measure! Better than the scale!

I will rest today I guess. :( I shouldn't but I walked around a bit so better than nothing. I want to play FFX though... Lol

I think I work pretty hard. I'm always out of breath/aching and my muscles hurt the next day. I'm guessing you guys would find it easy though :(
I will ask my seamstress all my old measures so I can later on easily compare them then. :D

And having a rest day is totally fine. Trust me. You need them. Go play the game and have fun!

Also don't compare yourself to anybody else! You are doing this for yourself and you are only trying to be the better version of you. It is totally irrelevant to compare yourself to the beast in here who have been working out for years if not for decades. So stop to that nonsense right now and just be happy when you do better than you previously have! ^_^

Burning out is impossible, I'm confident in what I'm doing is working. Exactly how, I can't say. But I can see it, and I can feel it.
If you are confident that what you do is working and you can feel it, why do you even seek for advices?

Also when you say you have no time between home and work that is just a bad excuse. You can make time, if you think it is worth it. If you really would want to go to gym three times a week, you could find someone near your working place or home and do it before work or just after it.

I know this sounds harsh and hard, but with baby steps it can be done. Don't try too big changes in your life all at once, but change little things one by one and before you know it, you are living a healthy life with awesome eating habits.

You most likely are.

Mind finding an example body and posting it up?

2 fills you up? I wish that were the case for me.

I only have three months!

I will eat well tonight then and take one off... I feel lazy though.

Tomorrow will be an extra work out! Maybe I'll do my strength one tomorrow since I won't have to be in bed by 9. Three strength work outs this week should be good.

Only?

3 months is alot. With the right nutrition, program and mindset you can accomplish your weightloss goal.

I'm willing to take advice, but I never asked specifically for it. The other guys in this thread were willing to comment on what I've been doing (most likely because it was very weird in comparison to what they're doing).

Well the time issue sure I could swing something, but being able to get there is another matter (as I don't have the ability to drive all that often).

I go to my gym five times a week. I end up staying there about 2 hours (give or take).

And I appreciate the advice as well for the baby steps thing, however I've been doing this since the end of last year, only recently have I been able to take my fitness up a notch. So there's that.

You spend 10 hours a week in your apartment gym and think you wouldn't have enough time for a real program at a commercial gym?

The fuck??

That... Wow that's a lot of time, man. Doing starting strength at a gym would be like 45 minutes, three times a week. Less when you are first starting it.

Ashodin, what you are doing is inefficient. That's really all there is to it. If you want to save time and have more spare time and work more effectively, pony up the cash and go to a legit gym - and then when you read the OP with some programs (not routines, not exercises - you want a PROGRAM) then youtube videos of them so you know "oh hey so the rack pulls are THIS, now I know" and educate yourself.

I understand your goals aren't being clearly stated and may differ from a lot of ours'. That's fine. But if you want to build muscle, you need to make sure you take the time to learn so you're not wasting time spinning your wheels.

If you want to say "NOPE I GOT THIS FORGET IT" then go for it, but there's a reason why programs like the OP are outlined - because they work. We'll all be more than happy to help you make your program more efficient if you like. I'd kill for an extra 5 hours a week.

20/40 minutes isn't that much a day. :(

I think I need to go shopping anyway, so...maybe I will pick up food and it will be too late by the time I get home :)

It depends on what you're doing and what your goals are. I'm working out six days a week on average and am in the best shape I've been in for the past 5 years.

Dumb question but how often should I do cardio if I want to get toned and lean? I do a 30 min. cardio program 3 times a week. I'm just concerned about losing muscle.

What kind of cardio are you doing? Go for interval training for best results.

Some Starting Strength progress, after about 10 weeks.

2monthsirulw.jpg

BP - 135 -> 190
OHP - 65 -> 125
Squat - 135 -> 245
DL - 110 -> 200

(I work in kg so rounding for lbs might not be exact. Figured I'd just try to be US friendly and those numbers look bigger so...)

Last few workouts I've been stuck on everything except DL (where I feel I can do a lot better yet), so I don't know how much higher I'll be going anytime soon :| I'll probably deload as per the program to make sure my form is doing the right thing. Especially on squats I can feel that "bad things" might happen on the last few reps.

Anybody else up around 6' 5" want to provide some advice about how heavy you can go? My feeling is my body isn't built to lift much heavier, because I'm more stick like than beast like and that will likely never change. On the other hand, I'm probably just looking for excuses.

Either way I see many years ahead of me but I'm still enjoying it.

I'm very much a beginner too, so I'd be happy to help pass on things I picked up if you have something specific.

Hey nice progress. Can you put your meal plan?

Hey FitGAF, I was wondering if you guys could help me out with a work out/diet plan? Between February and May I lost about 20 lbs (185 to 165), and I'm about 5'9" in height. I still need to lose around 10 lbs to reach my goal, 155 lbs but since I came home from college I haven't been exercising as much, and I've been eating so as to maintain my weight and not lose it. Some of my friends and I are working out together, but none of us have access to a formal gym while at home, although we do have some equipment. What we have is a bench that doesn't incline or decline, a Bench Press Bar, a curl(?) bar, and a track we can use. Can anyone help me out on what the best workout plan with this equipment is to turn fat into muscle? Thanks a bunch, and I hope it was ok to post this here. Not sure if I should post pics of my current self right now.

edit: I should mention that I lost the 20 lbs completely by cutting calories and doing cardio, so lifting has been pretty hard for me. I still kind of look fat to myself tbh, but everyone tells me I look a lot better than I used to, so I'm not sure how much I should be losing/gaining in muscle. I don't want to be huge, but I want to not be fat anymore.
