Clegg said:I agree that our midfield probably isn't as weak as I made it out to be,but it certainly isn't strong enough in comparison to other teams.I was only 9 when United won the treble but even then I could see that the midfield of Keane,Beckham,Scholes and Giggs was something special. Our midfield now is miles behind those four. The youth players like Cleverley,Morrison and Pogba have the potential to be stars but it's still a bit too soon for them right now.I think Defour would be a good option but the way things are in the transfer market Standard aliege would probably ask for 25 million and theres no way United would pay over the odds for him like that

I know the Defour twitter thing was a wind up but in a summer when Henderson has gone to Liverpool for 20m and Jones to United for 16m, 25m for Defour whilst too much may well be the asking price.Tim the Wiz said:I understand what you're saying, and that treble-winning midfield was magical, but I wouldn't describe our current midfield as "miles behind", especially factoring in squad depth. It certainly stacks up in terms of prowess on the European stage and we can't really evaluate it post-Scholes yet.
As for the Defour for 25m rubbish, that originated from a twitter account that's pretty obviously bogus. Making the same claims of exclusive at the exact same time as before he's now claiming that United will bid 23m + Park for Modric. Ridiculous stuff. And looking back through his history, all he posts about are United rumours. Probably a RedCafe member spinning muppetry of the first order on a lark.

Oh and the Park + 25m for Neymar was my favourite twitter muppetry.![]()

Tim the Wiz said:I think I said much the same thing--market's pretty crazy right now, so why not 5m more than Henderson? And I could still half-believe it if the source were in any way reputable. Guy is obviously having a laugh. Should be fun to see how many more "exclusives" he has over the next several weeks.

elseanio said:Didn't you guys pay around £20m for Anderson? So Defour = Anderson + £5m? Definitely worth it!
You have to consider that Anderson at the time was one of the best 18-year-olds in football at the time, every big club was after him.elseanio said:Didn't you guys pay around £20m for Anderson? So Defour = Anderson + £5m? Definitely worth it!
Edit* Wonder how much Javi Martinez would go for? Is it just taken as a given that he will stay at Bilbao?
Defour would be a great signing but David Gill has already said he'd try to conduct all his transfers in June, which only leaves a week for more transfers to go through.I think United should see into the availability of Nasri. He only has a year left on his contract and would be a great addition to the team, probably be cheaper than Defour too. That Gill story may be complete crap I dont really know for sure.elseanio said:I guess my point is, if you're willing to spend over £20m on an 18 year old prospect from South America, a similar price for an established international should be no problem.
That said, it's a bit silly comparing players/prices. Every club and situation is different. I believe Defour would be a great buy for United, and if they can afford £25m they should do it (I know the twitter is likely bullshit)

While I agree to a point, I do think that more competitive teams are a good thing for the league as a whole. Not necessarily a good thing for the sport though.elsk said:To say that Manchester City is a good thing for football, is like saying that Blatter is good for football...
