Football Thread |OT16| Bacon & Dregs

Just thinking back to WC2002 again. That was a wonderful tournament. Even the qualification had some magic moments. Beckham's last minute free kick at Old Trafford :D
Really enjoyed that World Cup. 2006 has been my favourite of the ones I've seen.

2010 sucked. I was really hyped for it and it was rubbish.

Yo, kharma45. I'm looking to spend about £1000 - £1200 on a new PC soon. Pick the parts for me.

Will do, first, what are you looking to do with it? Gaming, video editing (if so what programs?)?

I actually missed the vuvuzelas when the PL started again, probably just because I was so used to them.

I can't imagine what you guys earn if you can spend over a grand on a PC.

I could never justify spending that much on a new/refreshed PC. My upper limit is about 1000 EUR. It's not because I couldn't afford it, it's just that I go through these periods where I won't play a single (new) PC game that sometimes go on for six months or so. I'd feel like such an idiot for spending 200-300 EUR more on a high-end graphics card and then not use it. And then when you do actually get to use its pawa, there's already a new one out that's just as good and cheaper. Feels bad, man.

The only time I'd consider going all out on PC hardware these days, it's at the start of a new console generation.

Graphics and cost of games aside, one huge improvement often overlooked is the mouse and keyboard combination. I can no longer watch game footage played with a controller. It's all so damn clunky and slow.

2006 was good too, yeah. Hard to decided what's my favourite. I constantly splurge over the Bergkamp goal at 98, loved the Croatia team of the time with Suker being one of my favourites and he had a good tournament, England being involved in some entertaining games, Owen's goal against Argentina. USA 94 - watching Romario and Bebeto ripping it up for Brazil, Baggio almost single-handedly dragging Italy to the title but not quite, Saeed Al-Owairan's goal where he sprints the length of the field and scores for Saudi Arabia, Klinsmann's goal against South Korea(?), Maradona looking crazy-eyed into the camera after scoring. So many moments it's hard to pick.

Still room in that budget for changes too like moving up to a closed loop water cooler like the Corsair H60 because apart from that you've pretty much got the best of everything bar the CPU but an i7 is wasted for gaming really.

Depends on the game. For an FPS M+K is a must, but I prefer the controller for third person stuff usually.

Best sporting moment.

Last game at the Dell. 2-2 vs Arsenal. Gaffer brings on an injured Le Tiss so he can play the last game at the Dell. Loft foot volly bang top corner. Many a grown man cried that day.

I've gotten a bit sick of swords and magic fantasy novels.

Back to Haruki Murakami I go.

Btw ya'll should read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

Edit: Read Kafka on the Shore too.

Any potential gig money I have is being saved up for the next Daft Punk tour. I want to see them at least twice. Once in this country and once on the continent ideally.

You just read my mind.

Other than a PS4 (slim chance I am getting a 720) and Uni fees, I need to cut back on majorish purchases. Save save save!

Clegg, you know what was a great match? France v Argentina in 2007 WC for the third placed play-off. I just remembered it there now.

Depends how contemporary we're talking.

It's fucking crap, anyway. Just Bolt running quick, doing his nobbish little dance, and telling the interviewer that he loves McDonalds chicken nuggets. And then everyone thinks because he eats at McDonalds he's this crazy sporting personality. Which about sums up the people who get all wet and wild in anticipation for the 100m sprint. Bore the fuck off, let someone else win. It's not even a race.

Why so mad son? and why the hell would he make someone else win?

Ooooh that's a good one.

I've also just remembered France beating New Zealand in the quarter finals of the same tournament. That's was a good one too.

i remember watching mumford and sons' glastonbury concert in 2011 and being stunned by how literally every song sounded the same.

2007. Ah, that was the tournament where England's Brave Lions defied all odds and made it to the final. Only to get outclassed by South Africa. Brings a tear to the eye.

Cheers, kharma. But what about a 680 card? And I wonder if they will let me swap Crysis 3 for No One Lives Forever??

Ooooo the Masters isn't far off either. God damn I love Augusta.

680 is good but a 4GB one is over your budget for that build, I could try to work it in if you wish? And no you can't swap the games, with the 7900 cards you just get those two.

7970 is still the best single card unless you want Nvidia for their CUDA tech for video rendering in programs that support it, but even then if you're using something like Sony Vegas AMD's OpenCL is much, much stronger.

2015 can't come soon enough. I hope we've someone other than Kidney by then.
He's almost certain to leave by the summer imo. His contract expires at the end of May and the IRFU have done nothing to suggest that they'll give him an extension.

O' Driscoll will have retired by then though :(

Scum you could change the 7970 to a 4GB 670 in that build if you wished, it's only around 10% worse than the 680

It'll be a shame when O'Driscoll does retire but we're ready for new blood imo.

I see Woods is back as No. 1, eh? Good for him.

A Dick Advocaat led team choking? Shock and awe.

The whole setup looks all good. What about more RAM? 16GB or am I being silly? :p

We need new blood but imo O' Driscoll is irreplaceable. He's the only world class player we've had in the last 20 years. We're going to struggle for a while after he's gone.

RAM prices are increasing so it's up to yourself. At the minute for gaming 8GB is more than enough but if you want to double up go ahead, it's another £30 or £40 roughly.

We will but it'll give the chance for new leaders to emerge and I hope take us forward again as we've slipped back quite a bit of late.

The Sopranos made me feel really, really uncomfortable the time that
Dr. Melfi got raped
in season 3. I found it really hard to watch that scene.

I started watching the Sopranos a while back. Was good but wasn't quite seeing the magic everyone raves about. Forgot where i got up to :(

I'm only on like episode 8 of season 1 before stopping watching. Really enjoyed it but not incredible, but I wouldn't expect it to be that early. Took me 10 eps to get into the Wire first time round.

Second time round those first ten episodes were fucking amazing

It's clearly well written and the characters are interesting but it was always lacking that narrative cliffhanger that had me scrambling for the next episode.

I've only every watched the 1st Ep of The Wire.

One day.

I found that with The Wire, just a show I couldn't get in to.

I think I'm about season 4/5 with Sopranos for example I've seen that scene you spoiler'd.

Sopranos is worth it for the ending of the show if it hasn't already been spoiled for you.

Did you enjoy the 'Pines Barrens' episode of season 3? Probs my favourite.
