Forbes - 'Ghostbusters' Box Office: Is A $50 Million Weekend A Big Enough Debut?

Eeeh. When are early reviews not positive? I'll wait for the general consensus.

It doesn't mean these folk genuinely don't feel this way. One is Patton Oswalt who I'm not sure I'd call a bullshitter. Another is Devin Faraci, who I'm not a huge fan of but I don't think he was optimistic about this one.

I thought Warcraft was a crumb of shit, but a lot of people really liked it for various reasons. I don't think early impressions are always disingenuous, but it doesn't mean everyone will agree either. It is what it is.

Better than Ghostbusters 2, but then again that's not really saying much.
I see this occasionally to and I really don't get the people saying Ghostbusters 2 is a bad movie. It's far from that. I will go as far to say if this movie is as good as Ghostbusters 2 than this Ghostbusters will be remember fondly which would be great.

I don't dislike GB2, but I have my doubts that this could be way worse or something. I like things about it, but it's a ridiculously far cry from the first.

I can't wait until Sunday now. Should be fun review thread one way or another.

Is decent enough to serve crow though? And decent in who's eyes? Ghostbusters is considering an all time classic comedy film and any reboot was going to face extreme pressure from fans even before the all female casting. If reviews come out saying "it's decent but not as good as the original" I'm not sure if anyone gets served crow. This is doubly the case if reviews say "if you like McCarthy/female comedies you'll like this, but if you want another Ghostbusters the humor isn't for you" then what?

Besides the "manbabies" who started crying the instant the remake was announced/female cast confirmed likely aren't going to see it anyways or will hate it regardless of how good it actually is.

If it is a good movie that will be good enough for crow considering how over the top the reaction to the trailers were. Especially when Paul Feig trailers are historically awful.

Did the Super Battle clip ever get posted?

This is so not Ghostbusters to me, the tone and direction of the film is just off.
Holy mother of god. I went from "on the fence" to "Fuck no" after this clip. Thank you for posting and saving me.

Ghostbusters 2 is amazing. I might like it more than original.

Yeah even if it's just OKAY the dialogue since the RUMOR of it happening with a female cast will be enough to make crow go completely extinct.

People have been predicting single-digit tomatometers with a straight face, so there should almost definitely be some crow eaten.

Unless this is something of an anomaly and a lot of the critics are among those who are in the "boycott" crowd... I mean Feig's last two films were a major hit with them lol

BUT this is a property film with a lot of let's say history behind it so it could be different.

I'm pretty much expecting it to be around 50-70%. Kinda low depending on one's point of view, but still good if it's something you're interested in.

Predicting the score for this is pretty much impossible. Not only is the movie going to be reviewed based on its own merits, but many reviewers, consciously or not, could let the politics and meta surrounding its production influence their final score.

What's the obsession with people eating crow?

Everything on the Internet is reduced to a zero-sum game these days. You are either vindicated in your convictions or must suffer the consequences. Really strange.

I don't think it matters if this is Ghostbusters or not, this clip is just bad. The movement, the pace of it, is just...bad.

I mean, it may be on point with how it plays out, but these things are edited down for marketing clips sometimes. I also think it's important to factor in the entire sequence, taking out select bits can make things seem weird at least from an editing standpoint.

The clip may make more sense with further context, but on the surface it is at odd's with what we would expect from the Universe. They are literally flinging ghosts around and having them crash into each other (instead of catching them). I guess they are no longer ethereal but corporeal now? Why are they beating up/fighting ghosts instead of catching them. It just doesn't make any sense.

This also ignores other subjective opinions about the quality of CG, tone of the comedy and execution of action here which could add many other complaints.

It's really strange. It's nice to have a gotcha moment spontaneous, but now people are seemingly planning it out months in advance, hoping that it falls one way or the other so they can quote all of the wrong people so they can get internet points. It's all very odd.

The marketing for this movie is really bad.

It's definitely a more loose take. I don't really mind them doing some wrangling/wrestling with the proton beams, it's fun. They're also dealing with multiple ghosts attacking them which is something we didn't really see before, at least on this kind of scale.

edit: I agree the marketing has been abysmal

You may be correct, but the clip as is looks really shitty. It's a bad clip either way you want to cut it, whether you want to look at it from a Ghostbusters angle, or just a standalone thing.

I only just watched GB2 for the first time last week. It was an okay watch, by my god, that Statue of Liberty scene was one of the worst things I've ever seen on film. Holy fuck.

I should probably watch the first one, I never have. I'm 22......

When you're done watching the first film, check out Moviebob's Really That Good: Ghostbusters to get a little deeper into the meanings and themes of the film.

And yes, most of Ghostbusters 2 is straight garbage. Peter MacNicol's portrayal of Janosz being one of the few bright spots.

I seriously dont understand why GB2 gets so much hate

Because it's an unfunny cash-in film that was riding the popularity of "The Real Ghostbusters" animated series? None of the original cast wanted to do it, nor did Ivan Reitman. It's basically the sort of low-effort, no soul filmmaking that was designed to sell toys. The He-Man of movies, if you will.

That video was physically painful to watch. So photon packs are basically blasters that can be used as a rope now? Ugggh.

I'm not watching the clip but isn't that always how they've acted? A stream goes out and wraps around a ghost, they wrangle it to tire it out, shorten the beam to reel it in, and then trap it? I think in the game you also slam ghosts into things to help tire them out and weaken them to be trapped, right?

Also, pRoton packs, not pHoton. :3

This is more than just wrangling. They are throwing them around like an Olympic hammer throw.

Hmmm

I'll wait till I see it to make a final judgement but honestly it sounds like they're just playing to the type of humor that seems to permeate this movie ie - lots of slapstick. But again having not watched the clip myself I might change my mind once I actually see the movie.

God I hope it's good. That's all I want. Not even spectacular or amazing, just good will suffice. Anything above that is gravy.

I keep seeing "reviews" where people, who have no skin in the game, are saying it's funny. Maybe it is just that, a funny movie.

don't know what people are surprised at. as soon as they showed the ghostbusters arsenal in here I knew there'd be some action stuff.

dull ass clip though, was not entertaining in the slightest.

That's exactly what we are surprised at. The absolutely piss poor performance in every direction, right down to the ghost, how they are handled, the way the proton gun was utilized, the acting in consideration of the situation, the music, the interaction, the setting, the tone, everything all within that one clip. The problem is not the arsenal, the problem is how all is done. Hope you understand now.

That is my prediction too. I'm very sure that thanks to the actors that the movie will be humourous but that is where it will stop. This is NOT Ghostbuster or, much rather, this is not the Ghostbusters movie that we all want. If it was a movie with any other name then it would be just ok but my prediction would be just that... people will say it is "JUST ok'ish" borderline bad with some humourous jokes & moments here and there. Heh, 30 yrs wait for an "ok'ish" movie that will potentially tarnish the Ghostbusters' name and for everything why we loved Ghostbusters. Unacceptable.

ahh Ghostbuster 2 haters are the best, It was way better than you are giving it credit for.

Proton streams have always "wrangled" around ghosts, Jesus guys.

In part 2 Peter acts like he just roped a bucking bronco and in the game you can slam ghosts in to walls.

It's a thing.

It's what the packs *do*

Let's be frank. That element is minor.

No. It definitely won't flop. The movie just isn't targeted for us, it's targeted to kids. This is not the Ghostbusters we want and so far it is shaping to be a bad version of the movie we love, thus tarnishing the Ghostbusters name. That is painful..

Heh, now the movie have a scene that give everyone that is against it a big "f" you": https://uk.movies.yahoo.com/revealed-the-ghostbusters-scene-that-was-added-to-142244826.html

Plus, the movie has an review embargo date on the film's launch day, which is obviously done in effort for the film to attain as much money as possible as the movie has been potentially been reviewed internally as "below-average/average":

"We have recently learned that the review embargo got extended from Monday morning to Monday evening to when the movie opens," Storsveen writes. "I have reason to believe this is because many reviews from established outlets are mixed to negative, so they want to keep a lid on it. Only select fans who they know will say positive stuff are allowed to speak early."
