Former Bungie composer Marty O'Donnell regrets that he was unable to get Microsoft out of Bungie

i don't understand
Bungie became massively monetization focuses. A lot of people assumed once they go independent and out of the grubby hands of Actvision, Destiny will reach it's full potential. Instead the game (while not dying), probably has one of the worst monetizations and storylines ever. Where you bought the main game, but the story is told in the season pass. Where 90% of the content got gutted before Destiny 1's release, and by the looks of it, all Bungie has been doing is piecing it together since that era after Joseph Staten got kicked out of the company. The shooting is top tier, but Destiny 2 pretty much proved why sometimes publishers need to kick the asses of certain developer teams and reign them in. It pretty much proved Bungie worked on the same copeium as Bioware in terms : All we need is some Bioware magic to make it work. Bungie's entire dev pipeline was horrible under Destiny 1.

D2 ? Is or was kinda better but most of the expansions are reskinned enemies, with occassional special bosses - and special enemies. They also managed to piss away all their goodwill with Witch Queen, after the latest expansion feeling like cut in the middle so Final Shape can be sold.
Yeah the raids are top tier but holy shit the IP is squandered ,and a lot of Destiny youtubers are now expecting a Titanfall to Apex Legends type of Exodus, where Marathon gets the main focus, and Destiny as a franchise gets shuttered.

I think he is referring to the possible greed "more more more" mindset?

They were the first to usher in paid for multiplayer and then MTX on consoles. Bungie's whole mindset now is extracting as much money out of the engagement's keeping them hooked in the loop long term.

Maybe.

Haven't played since Witch Queen, but here is my old rant.
With the Witch Queen reveal, when Bungie told us that dungeons would be locked behind the 100 USD legendary edition, I finally had the courage to uninstall Destiny 2.

Its not just the content vaulting. With Destiny 1 if I worked hard to get that Hand of Judgment god roll with Explosive Rounds or Firefly, or Eirene RR4 with Triple Tap, Casket Mag and Clown Cartridge, you got those god rolls. We even had a very reliable spreadsheet. With Destiny 2 these stats change every season and I don't know what my aim for grinding is anymore. They add too much stuff every season and later remove them at will. There are these seasonal story contents(usually not that interesting but you do it because you have to) and quests(released every week) that you have to be present at that very season or you miss out. Every new season they increase the light level and then starts the grind to hit that level cap and then get the "meta gear" thats now the best in whatever weapon archetype you prefer. If you spend just like me only 1-2 hours every day on this game then you will spend the whole season doing everything. Everytime time I took a break, I will look at some new "meta" weapon that I missed out on from a previous season, and these are very hard to get or just impossible after that season. Also, the whole mysterious atmosphere of Destiny 1 is gone. In most MMOs you can leave for years and come back and catch up with the new content, with Destiny 2 the game wants you to be always be present for all the content they added every season.

Anyone saying "don't get it" or "its just a live service, that content is not yours" does not get it. I didn't sign up for this when I sunk so much hours into Destiny 1, investing myself into this franchise. The goal of spending all my time to get that perfect roll in that particular gun is gone, now it will be useless in a few seasons and if its seasonal weapon I have time limit to get that. I remember when Crota' Raid 390 gave you the best looking armor in D1, now the best looking shit is in the MTX. Raid gear does not look cool anymore, people don't do them to get that Fatebringer(yeah its also here in D2, but in D1 the Fatebringer meta was never made useless, in D2 its just for nostalgia), people do raids to say they finished it. Also if there is a cool raid exotic, eventually you will be able to buy it(or an equivalent one with the exact same stats anyway) later through Bright Dust MTX anyway.

IHE who has been hating-liking this game since 2014 summed up my feelings the best.

We are playing because the lore is hinting at something great that will eventually happen. Its like Bungie figured out a way to have us invest all our life into this game.

This probably seems like what Marty was alluding to. Will just have take his and your word on this; I'm not a Destiny player but I hear they have one of the best monetization models in the industry...

...which from a certain POV could also maybe be seen as one of the worst monetization models in the industry, and they probably had the seeds for that laid during their time under Microsoft's ownership.

If I'm wrong in that interpretation of the tweet tho, I'm glad to be shown why.

Makes sense. I listened to this video the other night and was surprised to hear just how bad Bungie's greed got.

It's a shame too, because they craft such amazing gunplay in both feedback feel and punch/satisfaction.

I don't understand why people are so mad? you don't need any of these cosmetics to enjoy the game, you don't need all the weapons either.....

Just play the story and event content, the events have paid content and free......

I don't buy anything and enjoy the game a ton, are we mad because people can't control themselves?

He does know Sony owns them now right?

They work independently tho, self published.

Bungie under Microsoft was putting out banger after banger. Some could argue the run from Halo: CE to Halo: Reach was one of the best runs for any game developer ever. Now they just pump out rehashed seasonal content for Destiny at a fraction of the pace.

I love Marty and will always have place in my heart for his music, but dude hasn't been relevant in over a decade.

@JimRyan and Bungie is the one you want overseeing your gaas?🤔
I mean, they're profitable, and their FPS gameplay expertise is valuable if Sony shall bring back first party FPS games. A new Killzone or Resistance with that gunplay and KZ2 evolution of animations/ragdolls would be divine. We just have to avoid that type of GaaS like a plague.

Wish he would just hush. It was cool at first, you're a composer. You made great sounds. But you not the true reason for the success of bungie. He just starting to be more like pippen complaining bout Jordan now.

He is likely talking about senior staff that were Microsoft employees that transferred to work in bungie and grew to become leadership.

so yes, bungie left Microsoft, but there were still a lot of staff who were Microsoft employees now part of bungie after they left MS. He is very likely talking about current Bungie CEO Pete Parsons and former CEO Harold Ryan who were Microsoft employees prior to Bungie joining Microsoft.

Did someone at MS stop them producing any new PvP maps in over 4 years?

Bungie have laid down with every publisher going, and they've taken the riches on offer.

Hmm, that's interesting. Not knowledgeable of Bungie's management or the history of MS talent over to Bungie, but this sounds like a plausible scenario and what he could also be referring to in that tweet.
