Looking at the Fortnite next-gen trailer, almost frame by frame (cuz I’m a nerd), some stuff I noticed.
- Level of detail really is way higher, and it’s indisputable. The difference between the One X (the single best place to play Fortnite on console right now) and the PS5, particularly in the distance, is night and day.
- Real Clouds, which I covered, but they’re so detailed that light from the contrails is actually cast on them, as you pass through.
- Different water system. Rushing water looks more natural, more like actual creeks and rivers would.
- Death scatters you into a thousand cubes, which get absorbed into the little robot thing. Completely unnecessary, but awesome.
- Chug jugs get liquid everywhere.
- Better lighting from stuff. The campfire at the end, shadows cast, and the way the scene is lit, is actually kind of extraordinary.
Stuff I think I noticed:
- Better grass. Something about the scenes just seem so much more full and natural.
- Raytraced reflections? Not sure on this one, but the lake reflections are looking awfully nice.
- Not sure at all on this one, but the way the general daytime lighting looks, I think it may have had an upgrade as well. I can’t shake the feeling that it looks more realistic and nicer.
It’s definitely worth taking a look through. It goes by so fast, that your brain says, well, that’s Fortnite, and that’s true to an extent, but there’s actually a lot of nice details and upgrades.
