If it helps, you have a better win ratio against me than he does. We have an awesome triangle going on.

Played a few multiplayer matches with a friend, and it was pretty fun. Still have a ton to learn about the game, but we got an idea for the basic features. The aim on these guys is amazing at times. Our guys would sometimes be shooting at each other and landing kills when we'd least expect it. Did a 5 v 5 grenade launcher match for laughs too. Good times. :p

Picked this game up on steam sale and i'm really loving it. It's so painstaking to prime your turn and watch what happens!
Singleplayer is surprisingly brutal, even on first missions. Failed like three times on first escort mission :/ Story seems kinda neat, wasn't expecting that

Tried my skills on mp and won my first match! Felt amazing! Can't wait to do more mp. First mp win.

Really don't see what the fuss is all about. The core mechanics are solid, maybe even better than solid. But level and encounter design is poor. The randomized maps really don't suit a strategy game well.

Happens to me too. Did the rendering phase go thru for you? If so, you can go to the game directory and manually upload record.ogv to youtube.

I think so, its actually the first time I have gotten to the game over screen.

Of course everyone is free to have their own opinion, but the randomized level design is part of what makes this game great. It wouldnt be nearly as fun if there were only 30 hand crafted levels. Because you could learn them. Its not about learning how to play these levels but to find out, where on the map you can actually take advantage of the abilities of your soldiers. Its one part of tactics that you wouldnt have on predesigned maps.

And besides you could always just design your own maps and only play on them if you want.

I see your point but don't think it makes the game more fun. It detracts from the experience, as I don't feel like acutually getting better at anything. Plus the feeling of arbitrariness really lessens the overall sense of purpose.
The worst part is that the levels are poorly designed, with little meaningful strategic possibilites and random encounters.

As I said before. The core mechanics are very good but the playfield to use them on is not designed to their strengths.

A static level design does nothing for this type of strategy. Its all about reducing and taking advantage of lines of sight. If you look at it that way, the random level design suit the game mechanics perfectly as it provides different playing fields to play on. There are strategy games that allow for replay and refinement according to level design and there are strategy games that require adaptation to level design.

You do get better all the time. Just watch a video of really good players and compare them to yourself. You learn to scout without being shot, covering as large an area of the playing field as possible, you learn to work the probabilities in your favour and reduce the guessing game as much as possible. You learn what each class is good at and where you should position them relative to the rest of your squad. There's TONS of strategy in this game.

Yeah, lol. The setup was kind of horrible. Especially the 2 guys in the upper left corner, I only had the choice of getting blown to bits by your grenade dude or getting taken out by your mg. Meh. Anyway! Next round! I'll come for revenge!

I've picked up around 15 games this steam sale.... who knew this game would blow every other one out of the water. The level of strategy and thought that goes into every turn is mind numbingly fun.

It depends on what you expect from the game, really. For me it's all about coming up with a good plan to any given situation. Preset scenarios could be fine in a kind of scenario mode, where you've got to face really ugly situations. But for the rest of the game, I prefer random.

Spend 8 minutes designing a strategy to tackle the level, using multiple simulations.

Proceed to execute said strategy, only to get wiped out when it happens for real.

Reset the level, try again.

every single time, lol.

Only thing I can say is: focus on to something. You've got to make sure one of the enemies will get wiped or he will be in for a treat next turn, while your team is safe. If you try to kill the whole enemy squad in one turn, you're fucked.

Above anyting, keep your men alive. Don't rush.

You know, I can understand the argument that Randomized maps don't benefit the single player campaign. I do believe that the single player campaign itself probably should've been a bit more hand crafted in level layouts (there's a few in there that have specific set pieces that won't change however so it is partially crafted in that way) since the single player should serve as a start up to learn the techniques and then develop them to an adequate level before jumping into the multiplayer experience. With crafted levels it is then possible to have each level essentially serve a 'purpose' in terms of player development that you are then able to use to slowly augment the players skills until you are essentially able to throw everything at them.

Maybe it would've benefited the game a bit to have the first dozen or so levels of the campaign be purely handcrafted (rather than just partially) followed by the last 40 or so feature the random generation on the terrain?

With that said, with the multiplayer/skirmish mode - the randomised maps are definitely one of the best things going with this game.

My favorite game was one where an MG spawned in a corner, completely trapped by walls. I was effectively handicapped right off the bat.

I had an mp game once with 3 rocket launchers and 1 mg on both sides. That was... boom.

I dont :p

But in all seriousness, I can imagine why people do. They make it more complicated to predict what might happen, which is actually the reason why I like them. Yesterday, I started a match where I had a few guys trapped in a room (if they would have walked the only way, they would have died), and I just made them a way out of it without the fear of getting them into crossfire from the enemy.
