Frozen Synapse Tournament - Ongoing, incl. Video Footage!

Just finished my first moves for all matches as well:
Razakin
TheDanimal
archnemesis

Your turn, guys.

Started a game with everyone in Group A. Super excited for this.

Good luck!

Edit: Probably missed this somewhere, but are we going to a 16 or 8 man bracket after groups are done?

Forgot to add it:

  • Best 2 in each group advance. Ranked #1 will get to play a #2 player from another groupfofor the first elimination round. (random draw)

Hey everyone :) I am super pleased we actually get to have our third ever Frozen Synapse GAF tournament! Please read the following rules closely, as there are some oddities for balancing sake...

Ok, I feel like a bit of a dope here, especially since nobody else seems confused by it, but how does this work in regards to matchups, exactly? I've never done any sort of tournament in anything before, and I don't follow enough sports to know if this is some sort of standard tournament layout. I was expecting something along the lines of a setup where everybody has a fight, the winners move on to fight the winners from other fights, and so on until there's only one left. So if you've got players A, B, C and D, A and B fight, C and D fight, the winners from the two fights fight each other, and that winner's the big winner.

Now, my assumption with the group thing is that everybody fights a round against everybody else? However, the line...

2 matches with each group member (6 matches for you in a group of 4)

...has me stumped.

Does this mean six matches total per person for four-person groups (so 8 matches total per person for a five person group?

So I'm in a five person group, so I'd fight two matches against each other person in the group?

Your assumptions are correct. Because you are in a five person group, you will play each other member of that group twice.

You are player A:

A - B
A - B
A - C
A - C
A - D
A - D
A - E
A - E

The top two players in each group (via point total) will advance to a bracket style system.

Ok, that's what I figured it must have meant, I was just misinterpreting that one line. Wanted to make sure before I sent off all my challenges.

Right this shit just got real :)

Group B - Jazzerman, Instro, OmegaDragon

Guys i've sent you each a challenge - can you check its there and let me know - pm would be great please.

I'm pretty much a newb at this so if i have done anything wrong give me a shout!!!

Our match looked fine to me.

Ok, I went ahead and sent Super Muffin, kalor, and InertiaXr two challenges each.

Now that I think about it more, everybody sending everybody else a single set of challenges would have made more sense. Hopefully this doesn't confuse things.

Soldiers killed/lost ratio decides if 2 players have the same points at the end of group phase

Whare are soldiers killed and soldiers lost? Are soldiers killed by me equal to soldiers lost by the opponent? Or is it to account for suicides with the rockets?

If you have multiple matches in a group phase, it might make the difference across 6 games vs someone else who used up more/less units. A suicide would still count as "soldier killed" for the other party. Its basically as in soccer to decide any tie at the end of the group phase.

The soldier metric wont have an effect for the elimination round though.

Nah, its fine. After logging in, you see which games already started anyway. If you got challenged by a single player, you throw up the other challenges and done.

GL HF all! I created two games against Schnitzelfee, I don't know the FS names of the other two people in my group yet.

I hope they report back on time, but if they dont its auto win for you of course.

Btw, we got our first recorded tournament match!

Group: G
Player A: Najaf // Win // Killed Soldiers: 4 // Lost Soldiers: 0
Player B: Swarley64 // Loss // Killed Soldiers: 0 // Lost Soldiers: 4
Game ID: 1340016
Youtube Link: https://youtu.be/q0w-lIiX974

Holy crap, that was brutal O.O

Is there a way to remove the "OUTCOME" overlay?

It wasnt in the old uploads. Are the uploads now always with that overlay?
I might try to comment the tourney videos and reupload them with comments though, just to see how that works out.

When I watch the replay, I have to click one to remove the overlay.

I don't know how it works with Youtube.

I got the rest of my games sent although one of the people in my group hasn't sent in their FS name yet.

There are always 1-2 people who miss the tournaments, lets hope he still reads his PMs eventually.

So yeah, here's mine and TheDanimal's first match:

Group: G
Player A: AnotherDinosaur // Draw // Killed Soldiers: 3 // Lost Soldiers: 3
Player B: razakin // Draw // Killed Soldiers: 3 // Lost Soldiers: 3
Game ID: 1340186
Youtube Link: https://youtu.be/DcYrbQpwVOQ

Will try and get back to my turns tonight but need to work late. Will definitely send them in the morning if tonight can't happen.

I just felt like trying this as watching FS videos can be a tad overwhelming and reuploaded this match with commentary:
https://youtu.be/bRK_7C78ZdY

The FS sound is a bit too loud, which I would tone down a bit for the next video and my commentary is a bit too quiet (I'll try to increase mic loudness a bit). But what do you guys say? Interesting or no interest?

Also, I totally forgot to let the whole match run again at the end, which I would also add the next time.

Analysis would be interesting, but mainly for the elimination brackets!

Also your voice is too quiet, I have to push the speakers to the max!

Tough game, forgot so many things.

Group: E
Player A: DunderHassan // Draw // Killed Soldiers: 3 // Lost Soldiers: 3
Player B: Large Professor // Draw // Killed Soldiers: 3 // Lost Soldiers: 3
Game ID: 1340109

Edit: Me fooling around the red rocket soldier is hilarious.

Maybe it would be fun to have one or both players co-commentate, explaining the moves they made?

Interesting for sure to have my moves dissected like that. I'd love to see more. I agree on the volume, had to turn up all the way.

One bit on that match, and maybe worth pointing out for those that don't use the feature regularly, my MG who attacked the grenadier did see the Grenadier on turn 1. I had set the MG to continue on sight because had the grenade been fired out of the window, the timing would have killed my MG resulting in a traded kill at best. I tooled around on timings and felt it best to "check" the room and then address the Grenadier on turn 2.

Would love to see more commentaries through the tournament. Will no doubt help in the later rounds when playing certain people. Learning who rushes, who plays defense/stealth etc.

Just got home from work not long ago. Will start working through my matches over the course of the evening!

That is strange about the SG not getting a shot off. Tough one. The SG swings that match/layout.

Yeah, definitely. I also checked if the SG was on ignore or something, but didnt seem to be the case.

Well that was decisive.

Toma, a thought. Can you record a live game and talk through your thought process as you make your moves? I think it would be interesting especially after turn 1 when only seeing your view point. I'm not really set up to do a screen capture and voice over. Obviously you would only post the compilation when the match ended.

Sure, you can challenge me to a random match for it, but might take a bit longer.

Another match in the books.

How have you all recorded them locally without the outcome splashed on the screen?
