GAF educate me on the Japanese Sega Saturn!

I've been wanting a Saturn for a long time, I was a sega fanboy as a kid, (Still am... it's a sad existence) but my parents wouldn't fork out $400 for one. So I never got one, but years later I saw one on ebay and almost pulled the trigger right there. Why haven't I? Well, one reason is that I won't be able to play the entirety of Shining Force 3; I have no interest in playing RPGs in full Japanese and Shining Force 2 was my favorite game of all time, I can't not play SF3. Another is how bloody expensive some of the good games have become.

Still... every time I see a thread about Saturn on GAF I die a little inside by resisting buying one. I'm looking at pictures of the grey Saturn right now and it's a thing of beauty.

EDIT: I've sadly never even played one, and I'd have to say it's one of my goals in life to just fricken' play one.

Okay, I'm in Japan and all these Saturn games are looking at me funny, screaming "buy"

Is Radiant Silvergun particularly rare in Japan? There's a shop down the road selling it for $70 odd. Worth the buy?

Would the Action Replay cart work with a PAL Saturn?

What an absolutely fascinating system the Saturn is.

Not without the spine card!

Seriously, I just bought a copy for a lot more so I hope it's worth $70. Haven't had time to play it yet.

If you're playing the Saturn on an HDTV go buy an RGB SCART cable for it. If you're in NTSC land, get a SCART -> Component or SCART -> HDMI converter. The games look so crisp you'll think they're on an emulator. No blur or artifacts.

Where would you find such a converter?

Is Shining Force 3 worth it without the other two scenarios? I'm strongly considering just giving in and buying a Saturn, however playing an RPG without english text just isn't something I want to do. I might get the Saturn anyways, but SF3 is my main reason, with other games just being icing.

For those that use Action Replay or RAM cartridges, tip: once you insert the cartridge, leave it in there and never take it out! It seems those slots wear out pretty fast and wont read them after a while, in my experience at least. It happened to two of my Saturns.

The US 'recut' of Shining Force 3 isn't bad; the gameplay mechanics are all still fun and I had a great time with it back in the day. There's always the translation project anyway if you want to put a modchip in your Saturn to play burned discs.

Yeah, the connectors are kind of soft and get bent out of contact more easily than cartridge slots on, say, a Genesis or whatever. Especially bad if you have a shitty 3rd Party (usually Interact) cartridge with the super-thick board.

I removed mine once to dye it black (match the system) and then never again. I'm terrified of killing the slot.

No problem, never saw a reason to take it out ether. Only program with my Saturn is the spring to automatically open the disc tray when you push the button is gone, so I have to push the button and hold the system upside down to change games.

Cheers for the cartridge info guys. Never knew that. Although i have nothing but NTSC-J games, I'm about to grab an Action Replay cartridge for a mate that recently ordered a PAL Saturn.

Love old games/consoles so we're both in that mood i guess, next up I'll probably grab an Atari Lynx. I left two of them overseas to relatives and they ended up getting broken and thrown out... =/

Think back on it, when i was young i gave away a lot of consoles. PS1, Lynx, several Atari 2600 etc. lol...regret xD

Not sure why you'd buy a Japanese unit when a Pro Action Replay allows you to play every JPN game on a US unit and provides you access to the North American library too.

Becuase with the slot filled with an action replay you'll not be able to use the memory cart, 1/4 Meg expansion carts or Rom carts. I know that some of these feature are supported by newer versions of AR but I would not trust an old 3rd party accessory when it's affordable and better to get the official products.

It's the ones with the thick boards that cause the problems. I've never had any problems with my cart slot, I use official stuff all the way I have all the import versions of expansion carts.

The 4/1 works as both 4MB expansion, 1MB expansion and backup memory. There's really no reason to ever unplug it unless you really want to play KOF '95 or that Ultraman game (the only two games that use game-specific carts).

Are there any people out there that still mod Saturns?I have no skill with this kind of stuff.

Look around on the Racketboy.com forums and other similar classic gaming forums for premodded systems. The Racketboy chip is ONE solder connection. ONE. It's really easy.
