???
What would that accomplish? I'll just list the female rappers who, throughout the years, made enough of an impression on me to have an opinion on them, good or bad.
In no particular order:
Nicki Minaj - Gets a lot of hate. Deserves most of it. Her mixtapes were hot.
Itty Bitty Piggy is all you need to listen to if you don't believe there's a legitimate rapper underneath all the Pop pageantry.
Azealia Banks - Squandered potential. Has it in her to be a huge force in Hip Hop but will likely punch herself out the game with her stank-ass-attitude. 1991 is probably the freshest thing I've heard out of Hip-Hop in years, so it's a shame. Liquorice is one of the stringest femine statements since Queen Latifah's UNITY.
Lil Kim - Hardcore is my shit. Notorious KIM is my shit. La Bella Mafia is my shit. The Naked Truth is my shit. One of the first MCs to really embrace pop culture, and was a better MC on her own merit than most people want to admit.
Foxy Brown - Had some dope moments, but was never a threat to Kim.
Oh Yeah was my shit.
Trina - The blueprint for career longevity for females in the game. She's never had her time in the "spotlight", but I am in awe that she's still in a position to make albums that sell after all this time.
Khia - Who doesn't love My Neck My Back?
Da Brat - Self explanatory.
Funkdafied? Yes. Followed in the MC Lyte school of spittin as hard as a dude. A shame she punched herself out, though. This would become a theme for females in Hip Hop.
Lola Monroe - LOL
Iggy Azalea - Has more potential than I think she gets credit for. I enjoyed her Ignorant Art mixtape. I've got my eye on her.
Rah Digga - Disappointed that we didn't get more out of her.
Sole -
4,5,6 was my middle school shit. She ruined Genuwine, though.
MIA - I get the impression that people don't consider her Hip Hop, but I do. Arular is a staple of mine.
Shawna - More disappointment.
Gettin Some was my shit. I thought she had some legitimate skills. The poof.
Charlie Baltimore - Loved
"Feel It" when I was kid, but I remember thinking even back then that she was a little bit of a mess.
Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes - RIP
Jacki-O - Not particularly good at all. But trashy as fuck and I loved it.
Pussy Real Good? LOL
Brooke Candy - Slowly but surely I'm checking for this one. Stuff like
"Everybody Does" is fun but I'm waiting for her to display some genuine skills.
Diamond - More Trashy Fun
Queen Latifah - Goes without saying.
Missy Elliot - One of the best MC/Producers of all time. Fuck gender. Her first album remains my favorite, though. Followed closely by "Miss E...So Addictive"
There, although I'm probably missing some names.
EDIT - Add in
Remy Ma.
Conceited was my jam.
Jump was hot. Another punch-out, though.
Oh,Jesus stop the preaching. The reason we don't about many current female MCs is because there really aren't many worth talking about. You know about Pryde, Eternia and Moss put out a decent record last year. Other than that what's out is garbage and it has precisely zero to do with their wedding tackle. If the game ever births another Lady of Rage, I guarantee you this board will go nuts about it.
But Banks?
Asking us to get all talkative about some reheated pop act with only the faintest of hip hop trappings is like asking Pop GAF why they don't talk more about Nas, because you know, he's done some pop songs before and what, do y'all just not strong black men???
Oh cut the crap.
For the life of me I don't understand why people are so quick to dismiss Azealia Banks as more Pop crap. Is it because she caught the attention of Pop audiences? Because surely it can't be because of her music, which is more straight up Hip Hop than anything else.
Hell, she even pissed off her small Pop audience when she released
BBD, because she was hyping it like it was going to be a Dance track and ended up being Trap.
And when her EP and Mixtape are filled with songs like
Jumanji,
Liquorice,
1991,
Fuck Up The Fun,
Fierce,
Nathan,
L8R, and
Runnin I don't think it's fair to label her as Pop just because she's also got some tracks that are crossover-ish.
Like, seriously, what is it? Because she uses 90s club beats? People who continue to brush off Azealia as though all she is is Pop will get dismissed as never having actually listened to her music. She's no Nicki.
