I'm tired of seeing/hearing that dude Kidd Kidd on every 50 cent project released nowadays
50's faith in dude is so strange. He says he's drawn towards authenticity, people who know how to grind by themselves unlike his old G-Unit family, people who bring unique contributions to hip-hop..

...so he signs Kidd Kidd.

An amazing beat helps out a lot more on a track than a super lyrical miracle verses.

Both are important and can't have an amazing song with only one component.

Beats are obviously more important. Like I said before, you can have a great song with shit lyrics but a good beat, but not a good song with great lyrics and a shit beat (word to El-P and Immortal Technique). And that's accounting for any subjective emotional connection with the lyrics, which doesn't have to be "deep" in nature either to exist. Beats carry melody.

Well said, Fantano. I will always take beats, delivery, and flow over lyrics personally. I just don't care that much about rappers messages; I already have an education and values/worldview from various places, I dont really put a premium on that stuff. I do enjoy me a concept track if its well done, and clever bars, but lyrics comes FAR second to the actual music for me.

and it does for most 'real hip hop' cornballs that he was describing too, if they'd care to admit it

Lyrics are ahead for me if the music is going be something I can revisit years down. When we take the hiphop classics sure they've got their share of timeless beats but they also got what would now just pass as ok beats but the songs are still as listenable as ever and the albums are usually considered classics for their lyrics. I do not mean lyrics in the sense of a deeper message but the quality in the execution of the artist's intent so 2chainz can have dope lyrics and so can Talib Kweli. It feels like beats have a shorter shelf life and very rarely do you get something like a nothin but a G thang.

I get what you're saying, but those songs end up being skips even if they might seem to fit between the cracks of better "timeless" songs for me. I've marathoned the entire 2pac discography maybe 3-4 times and I'm not sure if those tracks with poorer production actually just aged better or my expectations of the past are convincing me to accept them as being okay for what they are.

EDIT: B.I.G. becomes the first rapper in history to rap at the White House. Legendary status.

Interesting, I was just listening to Young Lean's Kyoto when I decided to watch this video.

I agree that there is no science to the #dualities at play between beats and lyrics. Personally in my mind I might like to think that I'm a 55 lyrics/45 beat guy, but once I put a track on the numbers rapidly shift from one direction to another, throughout the track.

A horrible beat can ruin great lyrics, just as horrible lyrics can ruin a great beat; how many times due we lament the idea of "wasted beats." I'm God by Lil B comes to mind. More recently, fuckwithmeyouknowigotit by Jay comes to mind; thank god Ross gave us a decent version on Mastermind.

Remember the early aughts brehs, specifically the underground shit of the time? How many of those tracks had trash beats with inaudible bass/drums, under lyrical miracle rapping. That shit wasn't hot. There were some acts that shit together, production wise (Dilated Peoples, Soul Position, Brother Ali, etc) before Little Brother showed up, but there was plenty of SMH worthy stuff (Slaughterhouse's various rappers' solo careers).

One thing the video didn't mention was flow and presence. Sometimes both can overcome bad or forgettable lyrics. Love Sosa, I Don't Like, Pretty Boy, Young Lean's Kyoto, and plenty other tracks come to mind. Some shit just...works.

This depends. Ive developed a taste for 80s production and I do quite enjoy it now, even if it isn't as nuanced or interesting as what we have today. Kind of reminds me of the difference between Kraftwerk and Autechre, or the shift in complexity between the classical and romantic period. I obviously prefer the Romantic, but the Classical ish is still dope when looked at in a vacuum.

I think I fux with Jeremih more than all of them
Same, but he's pretty hit or miss depending on the production style. Late Nights is one of my favorite mixtapes ever and the Shlohmo tracks so far have been great, but both of his LP are mostly generic and boring. He's got a new one out soon but based on what I've heard it's more of that.

The song he has with Tink is good:

No CDQ yet.
This is awful

Go away.

I was listening to My Nigga a few minutes ago it really drives home the point about feel, and record making. YG is a trash rapper, dude has no quotables and similarly to French Montana he always sounds like a guest on his own damn songs...but that track is great. YG handles the beat perfectly, finds the right melody and it just works.

I think he's a little better than French, but yeah. Who Do You Love is one of my fave club jams atm. His flow + mustard beats is the kinda sound I can get into when I'm drunk and ignorant enough.

Best friends GF and her friends are being hostile. They always talked a little shit, but that was okay. Last night I figured out a lot of it was with ill intention. Called me a misogynist before (I hate this cause I was raised by a single mother and understand the beauty and strength in women), made fun of one of my friends for being fired from his job, and had a jab at me for being broke.

I'm used to exchanging punches and jokes (constant banter/shit talk between my group). Give me a reason not to go in GAF-Hop bros.

It's not worth your time. Can't let that negative energy affect you. As Charlamagne says, you have to give people permission to piss you off. Don't give them the satisfaction they seek.

Ignore them and hit them with the

everytime they complain about you. They'll either ignore you or suck your dick.

Alright, I'll take the advice. I can do that for sure.

As for them wanting sex, wouldn't touch those chicks with a hazmat suit on.. 2 fat, short white chicks. Yikes.

Okay, new plan. Pawn them off on PD and while he's distracting them, pork your girl in their car.

Yall acting like 60 yr old men. That Kid Ink Show me and Loyal by Chris brown are jams! Hear them in a club and i dare you not to move our feet. I love my boom bap and lyrical shit aswell, and since a lot of you are into that ignant trap stuff I'm surprised so many of you aren't feeling the mainstream hip hop stuff lately?

I can appreciate a good jam but Kid Ink is trash.

It's not that I hate boom rap, but I much rather listen to good boom rap rather than something by Kid Ink (whoever that is) and Chris Brown and yes, we are into trap rap, but there's a bunch of good trap rap just laying around on the internet (like the new Lil Herb tape)

Not a big fan of OG Ron C's* (imho Watts is way better) style but maybe someone in here likes it:

*seems like it was C&S by Slim K whoever that is.

So far it's horrible.

Happy 20th anniversary! to the release of OutKast's first and most underrated album. Praise the original album full of the start of something special for Big Boi, Andre 3000 and Organized Noize. A highlight of the album, it also gave us their first single, which is still one of my favorite southern hip hop songs of all time. This album stands out as a landmark for southern hip hop and set in motion a barrage of more classics to come.

Growing up, my uncle used to tell me about how Outkast was so much better before "they exploded" and I didn't believe him at first (I had only heard Stankonia and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below) and I finally was able to listen to Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik a couple of years ago and yeah, it's become my favorite Outkast album and it's just a fun album to listen to
