I've seen the OP of that thread make quite a few questionable statements in various threads there the past couple of months when it comes to Sony in gaming discussion topics. Now here's a quote from an actual DICE developer in the same thread:

They also had a couple of threads this past week on their thoughts on the business direction for Sony and Microsoft. Just taking a guess here but I think a lot of the exaggerated hostility from that place towards a certain brand of late come from a rather banal email leak, and they're just using that to contrive things to be upset about, a lot of which are easily disputable with actual information and level-headedness.

I'm frankly quite shocked at how uncivil gaming discussion on the other site has gotten these days; they lack balance, taste, and humility.

When I had an account on era, though, I was banned for saying Microsoft had monopolistic tendencies. Which is true when you look at their history. I've said the same thing here and was not banned for it.

Funny you should mention that because the same day the RedFall & Starfield delay news hit, the Jim Ryan email piece did as well, and guess which one was suppressed and which one was pushed constantly to the front page?

I get that they were both interesting topics to cover but many of the takes in the latter thread greatly exaggerated the wording in the email or made it sound like he personally agreed with the non-popular opinion, when all he was saying (IMO) was that as adults you have to tolerate that other people may have different opinions to you on certain subjects, but at the end of the day, they're your coworkers and they're there to do their job just as you are.

Leave it to that other place to fail at grown-up thinking, though. I don't know if they're 'compromised' or not but sometimes certain narratives almost feel like they're a coordinated effort. Gaming discussion just doesn't feel organic there especially when it comes to some of the Sony-related stuff of late. I don't like pushing disingenuous narratives on any of the consoles: there's things I like about all of them and things I don't like, but that's about the extend of it.

Some of the posters, even mods and admin there, they have a really bad habit of exaggerating shortcomings (some not even factually discernable, rather just perceived) on Sony-related stuff and acting as if they're on a moral crusade to "shame" them or something. It's weird

Also while I can't prove it, I think one of the reasons some of them are more fond (in a few cases, almost religiously) of Microsoft/Xbox there is because they might correlate MS's moves with GamePass to Marxist & socialist ideal embodiments. "Free and cheap" gaming on a centralized service controlled by a central big corporation. "Gaming for all" via play on any device, any way you want. The appearance of corporate progressivism with providing content "for free" (use MS Reward points to pay for GamePass, stack 3 years of GP with a $1 conversion, etc.), so on and so forth.

Not bringing this up because I'm saying I agree (or necessarily disagree) with the thinking, or even to pass a judgement on if it's right or wrong if that's in fact the case. However, I think a lot of people on ERA think this way subconsciously about MS and are using that to lead their thinking, to the point of an extreme.

It wouldn't surprise me. And it sucks, because those types of people genuinely ruin actual discussion by shilling and being disingenuous. I'm sure Sony and even Nintendo have some astroturfers & shills of their own but it seems like there are quite a few more when it comes to MS & Xbox. Not here, thankfully, but on places like Era and also Youtube. Which I think some of the Twitter drama over a couple ambassadors and journalists around the time RedFall & Starfield got delayed might've indicated.

I've also seen a couple of people on the other place admit they have stocks in Microsoft. Now overall I don't think that's too big of a deal but I think if you're also knee deep in debating people on tons of gaming topics daily, at some point you can't be surprised if people think you're arguing in your own best, vested financial interests. I think even some people like Colin might get questioned that way at least once or twice, though he's kind of a self-admitted PS guy but has said a few times he has MS stock (don't know if he's said he has Sony stock).

All that to say, I'm kind of glad I'm not being paid by these companies, or even have stocks in anything gaming-related. If I were making money through gaming I'd want it to either be from other gamers via support, or from having an actual salary working at a developer. But in the case of the latter, I don't think I could personally partake in discussion at a hobbyist level unless we're talking non-current stuff, like older retro titles.

Sometimes I think there's some underlying scheme involving money. Is it too far fetched to think they're paying for them to push the Sony hate agenda? I don't know, it's so weird. I don't actually think your spoilered part is true, though, I think they're just cheapskates when it comes to actually buying games, which is extremely ironic since they gloat about their hardware acquisitions.
But, honestly, I'm browsing era less and less because everything revolving Sony is becoming increasingly toxic over time.

I actually don't think that's too far away from reality. There was a time when every single week there was a thread praising gamepass and they always read like paid ads.
One other strange thing you can notice is that they love bringing gamepass up even when it's not necessary. So, yeah, I think there are astroturfing there.

I don't think GAF is hard at all at Sony as most takes are really amusing rather than "hard" on it and are always by the same group of people.
What is annoying is when someone makes a clearly provocative take and makes a good thread devolve into console warring. That is really annoying regardless of the side.

Nah this forum is slow as fucking hell. A single thread takes years to get bumped. On the same page you have days old threads with no discussion whatsoever. It's a ghost town on most days. I have to find another forum that's at least somewhat active and not that other one.

I like this place. I don't really feel like I'm walking on eggshells when posting here, which is the BIGGEST improvement over ResetEra, to me. However, I will say that I wish this place was more active.

What I absolutely hated about ResetEra were the mods. It is clear as day that mods didn't really have any guidelines to follow and just banned however they saw fit. I will never get over the time where I got one of my numerous frivolous bans, and I sent a petition ticket asking to un-ban me. The moderator who saw my ticket was like "looks like you didn't break any rules, that ban is lifted from your records." Thanks, too bad that I already had to sit through that 1-month ban for no reason. In addition, I can get a 2-month ban for quoting a user and saying "You again?" while other users can tell others to straight-up "shut the fuck up" and they're left totally unscathed.

In addition, it felt like some users got off on reporting people and some mods got off on banning people.

It's way better than RE because it's a gaming forum and not about bullshit politics, but I still feel like mods are too sensitive about their favourite toy makers.

I started a thread yesterday about having no games from Sony that I'm looking forward to for the first time ever because they usually always deliver and got accused with a mod warning that I'm trying to stir shit up and "divide" the people.

Also that it was "low effort" which I feel is some loophole the mods use to get rid of threads they don't like. I wrote a freakin paragraph on it do I need to include pie charts?

I'm convinced that there's something going on in Era regarding Sony and its games.

Hopefully one of the few remaining credible games journalism outlets that aren't in the forum's pockets one way or another actually does an investigation or at least sees something to it. I don't think a single email leak should in any way swing opinion as severely as it seems like it has over there, correlation of timing checking out and whatnot.

If there's any further coincidental narratives set up around there playing into a pattern, hopefully there are enough people to make note of it. We need more honest, non agenda-driven gaming discussion across as many platforms as possible, even a mediocre offshoot forum founded on lies roughly five years ago that turned out to be getting milked by the owner so they could sell it to a questionable corporation without telling the admin or mod staff and not sharing any of the proceeds with them whatsoever

I've been here more than a year and after going through a lot of gaming forums like Gamefaqs, Reddit, Reset era, gamespot forums I have to say NeoGaf is frankly the best, I love the format and the kind of gamers that commute around here, people feel truly genuine and passionate about gaming.

For example I don't like Reddit too much because while some gaming subs are good the site encourages a hive mind kind of thinking. That doesn't apply here because GAF lacks the upvote-downvote system and everyone expresses their opinions freely.

In conclusion I am happy to be a member here.

What about useful/relevant information flow? How do you feel, is it flowing mostly in one way (from you to others) or it's reciprocal?

Yeah, things are definitely flipping. Microsoft is now seen as the good guys with GamePass and their percieved emphasis on single player while Jim Ryan has turned PlayStation into a GAAS factory.

Of course, there is a difference in designing games to fleece you longterm or designing a service that they hope will make you want to subscribe longterm.

I haven't been posting here for long but I'd agree. It's refreshing to see a board where people are genuinely interested in discussing video games while also having some sense of humor about it. So many message boards these days tend to be populated by old fossils past their prime who aren't even passionate about the hobby anymore but stick around because they've spent the last 20 years posting on the same board and they got nothing better to do while procrastinating at work.

Like it here because Im getting most of news from here and don't need to give clickbaity corpo shit sites any clicks nor time. Also I can curse and write how I like (to some extent) without "offending" someone or risk to get banned over silly things. But I can also have discussion or rely on community help or help out myself.

I don't want to sound like someone who got back here only because I got banned at resetera. I was almost solely discussing games without getting political but that's not possible there. They will always find something offensive. I realised that and was done with it when I was banned for a joke about cats someone found offensive and a second time for insulting the player character/protagonist in Metro.

So in short: it's mostly laid-back here and I still got my news and discussions the same as on resetera. I have no reason to go there any more.
