Can someone break down what happened with Bolton, the Starks and the Grey Joys? My understanding is that:

Theon invades Winterfell, gets Bran to yield the city to him.
Theon is believed to have killed Bran and Rickon
Bolton's men arrive, get the Greyjoys to rat out Theon.
Bolton men take Theon hostage and sack the city, but tell Robb that it was the Greyjoys who sacked the city?

Don't forget that Ramsey mentioned flaying all the Ironborn who surrendered Winterfell in the letter he wrote to Balon.

Good episode. They did a great job of tying up a lot of loose ends all while immediately teasing you for what's to come. Jon Snow, Jaime, Dany all had moments where you kind of take a deep breath but still have you wanting more.

Also, Joffrey made it through Season 3. I can't be the only one who has Season 4 Episode 9 marked as his glorious death, right? They may have to switch up the formula a bit and throw some curveball deaths mid-season.

Yeah but then we don't get awesome Joffrey gifs anymore. I'm not sure I'm ready to make that trade-off.

Another question: All of the Stark men are dead (or at least Tywin believes so), so why is Sansa and her eventual son even important? Couldn't they just start over in the North with whoever they want? Like what Robert did after he killed all of the Taragyen men? Or is the bloodline still important?

Tywin wants his grandson to control the north so even if Sansa isn't technically important she is because Tywin says so.

I get that but I guess what I am asking is is the Stark name/bloodline through Stansa stili important to get support in the North? Couldn't Tywin and Joffrey just name Tyrion new King/Lord in the North now that all the Starks are (supposedly) dead?

Vied for a tag related to cocks, so here it is.
- I really really hate the Frey helmets. Am I the only one? They look so friggen dumb.

Erghh, yes, It makes them look like a right bunch of idiots. Though I guess that's kind of the point, do the Frey men have much cash? Because those things make them look real poor and stupid.

I'm rewatching this episode and there was this great moment with Podric. As he was running towards Tyrion a pair of ladies gave him the stare and were getting hot and bothered by his presence. His reputation isn't the only thing that is spreading.

So many cheesy moments in this episode. Dany becoming mother of the slaves was the least of them. Theon's sister's speech about how she was going to rescue her little brother and Jon's "I know I luv u and I know u luv me" scene were beyond awful.

At least this makes the wait for season 4 a little more bearable. I'm not too excited to see what happens next after that episode.

What would you have preferred?

Theon's sister saying fuck it? Jon killing Yigritte?

Just remembered, Tywin thinks Bran and Rickon are dead.

Either Ramsey is keeping stuff from his papa or Bolton is being about as loyal to Tywin as he was to Robb.

It's all about the claims I guess...?
Lannister can name a new Lord by choice, but they won't gain support from allies of the North. So it was either control by rightful claims (Starks+Lannister baby) or control by force (army).

Btw...pretty ok finale. I doubt anything can top last week shocking episode. The lack of Littlefinger's reaction was the most disappointing.

Was a good episode. I was expecting soemthing awesome to see in the Season Finale though. Season one gave us dragons for the first time, Season 2 gave us an army of wights and Others, Season 3 gave us....an army of slaves?
Not sure if I understand Stannis' gameplan: is it bascially, help the Night Watch and win the peoples affection for defending against the dead? Maybe he can gain wildling support somehow, I dont know?

There is power in a king's blood, if I had to wager: the Stark name still carries weight in the North. Tyrion himself said "the northerners will never forget." Tywin knows this and places Roose Bolton as Warden of the North until Tyrion can get a son out of Sansa. The Northerners are less likely to rebel against a half Stark and Tywin would still get a Lannister in the North which is his primary goal. He wants to make ownership of Winterfell and the North official and in spite of what Tyrion says he is all about raising his families status.

A passionate embrace, a beautiful memory lingers.
A few extra points from last night.

- Joffery gave an excellent performance.

- Varys looked so put off by the news about the Starks. Love it.

- I have a feeling this was the beginning of the end for either Shae or Tyrion since Shae didn't take the "out". It's not like she'll stay and now everything will be ok.

- Wolf head was gruesome.

- I really really hate the Frey helmets. Am I the only one? They look so friggen dumb.

- Dat Frey foreshadowing from Bran.

I'm drawing a complete blank on this part and can't go back to watch the episode. Could someone remind me of what happened? Spoiler it if need be.

Bran's story about the Rat Cook, in response to Meera:
"It wasn't for murder the gods cursed the rat cook or for serving the king's son in a pie. He killed a guest beneath his roof, that's something the gods can't forgive."

I'm guessing the North needs some sorting out first before Tyrion and his possible heir can step in and rule. The Imp would be mincemeat if he suddenly turned up at Winterfell and starting ordering the Northern houses around.

I actually loved that scene with Jon. It felt so real :(

pretty good episode. it wasn't killer, but they managed to find some good notes to leave everyone off at for this just being a half-book. arya probably the most interesting character right now to me. she killed a grown man and didn't give a fuck.

I don't know why I didn't piece that together. Thanks for pointing out.

really really really loved the ending. I felt like the show was getting too bleak and dany's scene was refreshing after what happened in episode 9. I know the starks probably won't get any vengeance judging from how the show does things but dany's now become my fav character.

If the show itself is any evidence, you might wanna start hating Dany for the sake of your sanity

Shae is stupid. I think Varys is trying to avoid her ending up like Roz. I think he feels really guilty about that and wants her to leave before she dies and he has more blood on his hands. But noooo, she assumes its Tyrion being too scared to tell her to leave. Geez she's the worst. The throaty quality of her voice does not help.

I thought Melisandre made it clear when she said the real war was up north. There's no point fighting for the Red Keep when death marches south. Who is he gonna rule when the White Walkers have killed all his subjects?

Everyone got the memo from the Nights Watch but I guess Stannis would be stupid not to jump in first rather than bandwagon onto someone else's crusade up north. At least then he can build on that popularity and recruit an army again after losing most of his during the Blackwater.

yeah she is a complete idiot. oh well, at least i won't feel so bad when tywin inevitably has her killed. she's really asking for it.

Here's what I don't get; Dany is walking slowly towards Westeros with a huge (maybe the hugest) slave army.

Tywin and others absolutely have spies that were able to confirm she has three dragons and their size, etc. It seems like they should have months of warning that Dany is coming. Seems like the kind of thing someone would be talking about (I guess that could be happening off screen at this point).

I don't think they know she has dragons.

I think Varys and all his spies can no way stretch all the way to Yunkai. Look at the map. She's no wheres near Westeros

Pretty much. Stannis at this point if anything is ahead of the game. The Boltons, Freys, and Lannisters need to be looking up North as well. Roose in particular as the new Warden of the North needs to face that responsibility directly. Bad timing to get that job.
