I think even casual fans have heard about the infamous coffee cup left in an episode of GOT. it was a viral moment, a coffee cup (seemingly) left behind by some crew member, appearing in the HBO dark fantasy television show in it's final season. this moment was covered by all kinds of media. compared to the more controversial aspects of the show, this was safe and easy content, ready for the Content Farms. An embedded meme, fresh for the taking.

So my question to you is: do you think this was intentional?

I am leaning on yes. It is far too easy to digitally remove that cup from the video. There would have been a series of professional photographers, editors, colorists, digital artists, producers, etc. all seeing this footage. If caught at any point during production, the resource cost of removing this item would be negligible. It is a task so easy that it can be done using commercial software in under 2 hours.

Most of all, tt is free publicity for Starbucks, giving them an edgy bit of product placement. No doubt they were pleased with this, just as the viral content pleased the easily entertained social media and critical class.

FWIW I am not saying that they paid to have it placed or anything, but that the people making the show knew, and left it in anyways.

That said, maybe it really was a mistake, and sometimes things slip through the cracks, even when tons of money is involved. The producer claims it was, but it would be so easy to lie, and this is a series that often manipulated their audience.

What do you think?

Mistake due to apathy/incompetence. I don't think that was even Starbucks, so I don't think it was product placement.

Didn't someone leave a water bottle on the floor in a scene? It's a visual metaphor for how low the quality had dropped.
I dont think thats right. The directing and acting were still great, it was the writing that turned to shit

If it was on purpose, it was just some disgruntled editor or someone who could have stopped it at some earlier phase of production. It wasn't the actual show's intent to fuck with people.

Also, I think it's fucked that the big actors were all pulling in like $1.2M per episode at the end there, and even if they all understood it had gotten horrible, how are you not gonna work hard for that money? You know your fucking coffee cup is there. How are you gonna phone this scene in knowing it's over a million dollars coming your way for the episode?

Even if it was a mistake, iam sure Starbucks send them a "Thank you" mail afterwards for the free marketing

What if there never *was* a Starbucks cup, but some unhappy employee digitally inserted it there to stick it to the directors who s/he resented for ruining the show?

It would have been more edgy to have the awol Nights Watch men drinking Molson XXX while they were raping the women at Crastors Keep.
