Games you remember, names you don't

I'm still looking for an old 3D shooter game in DOS, where you could find secret passages like in DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D. It's not any of the well known games like Heretic or Rise of the Triad. I think you came across some old prisoners in chains along the way, but I'm not sure that's the same 3D game I'm thinking of.

Just going to rattle off some of the more obscure FPSes from the era, see if any of these ring any bells:

If we're talking a Wolfenstein-style engine (strictly grid-based, square walls):
Catacombs?
Ken's Labyrinth?
Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold?

If we're talking a more Doomesque engine (elevation, non-orthogonal walls)
Strife?
Shadow Warrior?
Blood?

Edit: Probably should have read on before answering!

Was it called Escape?

I found this link and it lists a game that matches your description:
http://zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/vic20/games/multipart.unexpanded/index.html
It sure does sound like it, but when I googled it, it showed the game as Escape MCP and it described it a bit different from what I remember it being. It said you need to collect a key and a program disk or something in order to exit the level. Don't remember the game having any of that stuff. Other than that (the last time I played it was back in -85, -86 or so, so I can't really say for sure) it sounds like the one I've been looking for.

In the site you linked, can you play those games in any way? They're in some weird format.

EDIT: Fuck, there were pics of some other version of the game, and it definately is the one! Awesome, thanks!!!

That soundsl like Dark Adventure by Konami actually.. if not, and I really dont think this is it, but Gain Ground, but I dont remember an Indiana Jones type of guy.

Definitely Dark Adventure. Thanks!

A friend was trying to remember the name of an old point and click adventure, probably from the early '90's. As far as he recalls it starts in a bedroom and involves everybody except the main character being brainwashed. He's honestly a bit sketchy on the details but any help would be appreciated.

I do have one for myself too. It was an old rally game in the arcade. The units I played on (usually on holiday in Spain) were all sit down models and it was viewed from an isometric perspective. To be honest there could be a bunch of games like this and I've just amalgamated them into one in my mind. I'm not even convinced that I'll recognise the name, but a video would be perfect. I do remember it had different environments; snow, desert, forest, the usual.

Zack MacKracken and the Alien Mindbenders? It's an old Lucasfilm adventure game using the SCUMM engine like Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island. It's kind of... weird. It stars Zack MacKracken who starts off in his bedroom and evil aliens trying to brainwash the world so everyone becomes stupid. Later you get three more characters to control, two of them on Mars. If I remember right the goal of the game is to build a machine to counter the brainwashing.

Its a japanese mega drive game, you play as a kid with blue clothes that have the power to grab and throw things, the first level is in a school and the boss is a helicopter.

That's got to be it, but I'll have to check with my mate tomorrow. Cheers.

I'm glad I saw this thread because I have one that's been bothering me for a little bit.

I recently heard about Ghost Trick, a DS adventure game where you play as a ghost who has no recollection of who he is or how he was killed but he needs to find out these facts so he can peacefully cross over into the afterlife.

What bothers me about this is that I seem to remember seeing an niche PC game shown on Gamespot TV ages ago with the same concept.. Like, the exact same thing; You play a ghost with amnesia who needs to find out the truth about his death. IIRC, it was a 3D adventure game (in the vein of the later Myst games, I think?) and some time travel element was involved.

Anyone know? There's a good chance that some of my info on the game could be completely wrong, since I heard about this a long, long time ago.

Well, it's not an indie game but it sounds like Shadow of Memories by Konami (PS2/Xbox/PC).

Oh nice this is probably it, thanks. I probably should have used the term "niche" instead of indie, I just remember specifically that it wasn't talked about too much. And I thought it was western-made, but like I said my memory of it was foggy.

If anyone thinks it could have possibly been another game, please post to let me know.

Possibilities:

Blomby Car
Drift Out '94
Neo Drift Out
Great 1000 Miles Rally
Mille Miglia 2
Over Top
Thrash Rally
World Rally
World Rally 2

My hunch is that it's one of the World Rally titles, those are the ones that I recall having more focus on variety of environemtns

There was a SNES game me and my friend used to play all the time. It was a beat-em-up set in medieval times. The characters were warrior, dwarf, archer, mage and possibly others. Every few levels you got an upgrade for your character (the archer got a bow that would shoot more than 1 arrow at a time, for instance). The final boss was a giant red dragon.

That's it! Never knew it was an arcade game... hmm... might have to try and get that Capcom Classics Collection for some 4-player awesomeness.

I played a NES game at a friend many years ago... It was a game that had different... hmm sports or something. I remember one part of the game being that you drive a boat through gates like in slalom.

So I guess what I'm looking for is a game where you drive a boat through gates (slalom) :P Anyone?

Track & Field 2? It had a kayak event where you had to navigate through gates like a slalom. Depending on the gate, you either had to go through facing forward, facing backward, or go around and go through the gate from top to bottom.

Sorry to bring this thread came from the dead, but I'm looking for a game which I can't remember any part of its name.

So, it's essentially a graphic adventure game for PC, which it's about a red-haired girl with glasses, her aunt passes away in the beginning or something, and later she has a ghost companion looking for something. It's based in New York IIRC.

Any help would be appreciated.

There was this educational game I played at school as a kid. It was about finding magical dragon teeth or something. One of the characters was named Nogard and another one was Nobbig. The dragon teeth were called the magical teeth of Bewgo or something.

Do you have an approximate timeframe for the game? It sounds somewhat familiar and that might help.

This has appeared in the thread before; I think it was called something like "The Dragon's Teeth". Funnily enough.

Found it:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=15694983&postcount=169

"Dragon's Tooth", I'm told.

Having said that, I do recall a very similar-sounding game from 4Mation called Dragon World, which was a bit more edutainment-y. Don't know if they've got any of the same derivation, but if it's not the former, it might be the latter.

A modern setting, it seems. Around the 60s, or 70s.

Last week I was in Micro Center watching a guy play a game on a 360. It looked like a typical beat-em-up with one character taking on a couple bad guys on the streets. Definitely made by a Japanese developer.

Here's one for ya...

Whats the game that the kid is playing in the beginning of BIG?

(looks like a king's quest, his character gets frozen by a wizard)

I've tried looking for this but it would appear that the "game" scenes were coded specifically for the movie and it was never a released game.

But hey...here's a link for you to "play" the same scene.

Alright. How about this one.

It was a Genesis game, there was possibly a SNES version as well.
It was published by EA and you played as a wizard that looked a lot like Gandalf in Peter Jackson's LOTR. It had an isometric view and played like a dungeon crawler. Combat triggered a close up battle-chess like UI and saving was done by sleeping on hay or mats or something.

you're thinking of "The Immortal". It was for Genesis, and NES...

I don't think I got the answers in the other thread, so let's try it again.

1. It's a shmup, think it was on NES and the first level was on the moon I think, you had these bunny looking robots. Think you can do a special involving giant rain drops everywhere on the screen, oh and I think the 4th or 5th boss was a dragon made of fire.

2. PC game, a top down view similar to Pokemon, Diablo...etc. I think you start on a island and after taking a few steps, these dragonfly starts to swarm you. I never found a weapon so all I could do was punch. Died shortly after that every time so that's all I know.

It's a bit of a wild guess, but it sort-of fits: Entomorph?

Edit: I've just looked up the start of it. I didn't remember it in detail, but it does look like you're swarmed with dragonflies without any weapon other than punches; looks likely to be the real deal.

That's it! Thanks! Always thought it started with a "E". :D

I posted this in a similar thread, so thought maybe it'd have more luck here:

Mid-nineties edutainment software used in primary/elementary schools about Egypt. You begin as an archaeologist, and perhaps there was a rudimentary digsite to show basic ideas of unearthing relics. Then, somehow it cuts to back in Ancient Egypt days and you wander around as as Egyptian, doing tasks and whatnot.

I'm pretty sure it was Mac, and the entire thing was isometric and sprite-based.

Any idea, folks?

What's that game where all the consoles and handhelds are represented by little anime girls? I remember seeing it a long time ago and was curious how it turned out. Seemed like a neat concept (though I'm sure it's an H game). I'm assuming it's for PC.

Well, this isn't helpful, but I'm sure I've played a Rome game that was just like that, quite possibly a sequel. I think I played it on an Archimedes, which heavily narrows down the number of titles to look through; I'll have a search.

Edit: Arcventure! Okay, it was helpful after all; just had a flash of recollection. I remember at the time that I originally thought the start of it meant "Archimedes", it wasn't 'til later I picked up that it was "Archaeology"

There's a game I've been struggling to remember for at least a year now, and I remember very little about it. In fact, for all I know it could have been a dream.

I remember it being pretty much isometric. It may have been a fantasy-styled rpg, but maybe not, because the one section I remember was somewhat futuristic. A lot of grey throughout the environment, robots, etc. This section was toward the end of the game. It may have also been a loot-heavy game. Probably on PC, but if not that then Gamecube or an earlier Nintendo system. Very vague, I know, sorry. Wouldn't pre-date the N64, probably.

Just throwing out a wild guess... Shadowrun on the SNES?

I keep remembering this game that I think was on the n64 but don't remember the name. Though as far as I remember you wake up (probably with amnesia like a lot of games) in a bunker or something and for the length that I played it I don't remember ever having the character go outside. I think you also get a lot of your information from tv broadcasts, I think it was a 3rd person shooter and the enemies were either robots (because I seem to remember floating oval lazer shooting things) or zombies. You went up and down ladders and across these lab like walkways, it all had the feeling that the character was somewhere hidden and secret. I really don't remember much of it as it's been a long time but thought I would try and see if anyone can remember (even with the little info).

Oh what a wonderful thread. Coincidentally I found myself thinking about a game I dont know the title of today.

Alright two games. The first game I remember watching my father play on the Genesis. It was a side scrolling shooter(platformer?). All the details are blurry, but I remember the scenery was green, perhaps a mercenary camp in the jungle? I think the character was a US agent or spy sent there to do a job. It wasn't just running and gunning, I remember platforming jumping. I remember that sometimes you would be contacted by someone and you'd see the text box with his face to the side of it. I believe he had some sort of headset gear, possibly he was giving orders or maybe intel?

2nd game should be way easier. It was a PS1 game based on Greek mythology. It had a top down view. I believe you played as hercules. The art style was definitely not something befitting the great pantheon of Greek gods. I believe there was one big overworld map and you went around completing objectives, possibly to open up more of the world.

Here's one for you. C64 game, you played a detective in a Columbo coat investigating a murder at a big manor house. You searched for clues and spoke to the residents, and through the game other people were killed. I remember that someone was killed by a piano being pushed of a balcony.

It was a brilliant game, and quite impressive for the time. I wouldn't mind a re-make!

Are we talking graphical or text, or something somewhere between the two?

Sorry, should have made that clear. It was graphical. It played a bit like a point and click game I suppose

This has been bugging me for ages.

Arcade game. Your're a helicopter possibly orange, fires up, down (or possibly drops bombs), left and right. The bullets were blue and I think you could get power ups. First level was set in a cave and you had to collect blue crystals that were set in destructible stones?

Similar play to R-Type but I'm sure the screen scrolled in all directions as you go along.
