GameSpot: Kojima to leave Konami after MGSV, power struggle, communications embargo

I wonder if Kojima could make a power play and cause an exodus of people in the company and form his own company.

Nil chance of that happening, but Kojimas a master mind. He's probably got a jar of bees ready to be unleashed in the next corporate meeting.

How fucking stupid are Konami? When it comes to games they don't have anything else. They have fucking nothing. Konami needs Kojima a lot more than Kojima needs Konami.

Kojima and his team had better not leave the industry. I hope Sony are ready to invest.

What does this mean to future patches/updates/DLC for MGSV? I'm worried the game might be left in a less than ideal state post launch because the original programming team is no longer there.

I'm more worried about the fox engine. Kojima Productions spent all this time on it, only to get ran out of the company. Will konami just use it for soccer games now?

So we still know nothing from insiders about Konami pulling a Sega and quitting the main gaming business? I mean, this is sounding all too familiar, since Sega also initially said they were focusing on Sonic and a football(ish) ip, then they basically retired.

Right because changing the cover art for a variant issue of a single comicbook is in the same league as the restructuring plan for an entire corporation.

I think all he wants is the "A Hideo Kojima Game" and the KojiPro logo printed on the boxart and stuff.

Removing those is a dick move on Konami's part.

Huh, wow... never thought I'd see the day, I mean, Konami isn't what they used to be. I'm pretty sure they still make money on those gambling machines and health and fitness stuff, but wow.

In a way I hope to see Konami just sell off it's IPs. Be cool to get a proper Castlevania.

If this is true, Kojima is probably going to be booked for dinner dates for the next few months by Sony and others, and probably will wake up to a blank check from MS on his end table.

I agree with him. Even if Konami try to continue the franchise I would not consider it canon.

Yup. Anything after this game I most likely won't have anything to do with. Just won't be the same without him.

But that quote that you screen capped. He knew right then as he was saying that. That he wouldn't be with Konami much longer.

He just had this look. I believe this is something he knew about and I highly doubt this news blindsided him

Have we even established that, even if it's the result of ~srs drama~ and not at attempt at a clean break, that it's not Kojima not wanting his name used to shill for the company he bailed out of?

This is a great point. I'm not sure if he'd retroactively disown the games like that, though. And that it would be executed as efficiently as it was if it was requested by Kojima.

Well, this sounds like a end of an era. Seems like Konami pushed too hard and Kojima and co. said "Nah, we're done". It's a bit of a bummer but this has been a long time coming. Honestly, I'd like to see what he and his team can when they're not bound by all the baggage that comes with MGS.

Konami basically has nothing I'm interested in at this point. As a business they'll continue to do fine but they've basically let all their franchises fall to the wayside. That's probably what'll happen with Metal Gear as well. It's a bit of a shame really. It looks like Silent Hills is dead before it even arrived. In the end this is all Konami's fault and they will have to deal with fallout of this. This whole thing is eerily similar of the Activision/Infinity Ward thing.

I see only two possibilities:

No more Metal Gear

Metal Gear every two years like clockwork

Could someone in the know tell me what Konami's primary revenue source is? Are they making enough money out of mobile or something to survive a post-Kojima era or are they signing their own death warrant?

They have a mobile soccer game and a baseball game. Soccer has outsold the MGS franchise ( FY2014 and its pretty close for FY2015 ) and I'm guessing has a much better operating margin. MGS is still a big part of their sales though

They have recurring revenue from arcades. They own Yu-Gi-Oh trading cards.

I'm sure Konami is just looking at this as a business statement. They want to see returns on their investments. They do not want games delayed. They do not want to wait 7-8 years to realize their return on investment. They are publicly traded and have shareholders to answer to.

They worked on the game for over 5 years, created a brand new engine for them and now they don't even get mentioned? Konami acts like Kojima and his team don't exist. It's fucking disrespectful.

I guess it's because KJP don't really exist anymore for real. But to act like they never did exist, that's kinda rotten. Other Konami staff is now in charge of promoting the game, and they probably want people to know that Konami made the game, not Kojima and his team. They don't want to fully credit the ones that aren't going to work there anymore, it seems.Which is bloody disgusting and a huge slap in the face to Kojima and his team. And why, we can only speculate. My bet is that Konami wanted more MG games to be made by Kojima, but he simply didn't want it. So they got mad then and this shit happened... There was no point in "Kojima Productions" if Kojima wasn't going to agree and stay.

Metal Gear Solid, I love this series more than any game series without question. I was only a teenager with the first MGS on PlayStation and experiencing it for the first time was a mindblowing experience.

With Kojima leaving, this is the true last Metal Gear Solid. :(

You already took beloved my Castlevania from Iga and now this.

Fuck you, Konami.

I don't think they'll let the engine go to waste, so who knows... annualized Metal Gears or something :/

I truly is an end of an era, hard to put into words.

At least he finished the story with his own vision unlike other franchises like Resident Evil that are still going on and their original creators are long gone.
Even if post-MGSV games are a disaster i won´t feel sad because the story went full cycle and whatever comes later won´t be canon in my eyes.

i really doubt Konami is going to look at a bunch of tweets and suddenly undo whatever undoubtedly complex web of corporate decisions, numbers, and actions from both parties lead to this

Of course not, but it might drive it home that they done goofed if nothing else. The outpouring of support might also convince Kojima to strike out on his own if he was previously on the fence.

Significant parts of the games industry really are in the wrong hands. When Kojima is openly treated like dirt you have to wonder.

Maybe this is one of those "it has to get worse before it gets better" eras.

This is the best news ever as far as I'm concerned. Konami is pure shit. Now Kojima won't be held back by their toxicity.

Too bad about Silent Hills, though. That was the one not-MGS-related good idea to come out of that company in a long while.

I can pretty much agree.

Kojima has, after MGSV, the chance to unleash his creativity and go nuckin futs.

All he needs to find is a publisher/studio who lets him do whatever he wants. Since he is a gaming legend, this should be kinda... possible.

Yep, Konami is done as a console software developer after MGSV is out and will go full mobile, bank on it. All those poor IP's. RIP :(

Silent Hills was actually the first Konami game since SH4: The Room, that I was about to buy.
