GarageGames Tribes-like officially announced and named - Fallen Empire: Legions

Is this that web browser based FPS we got video footage of a while back? Looks really interesting. (The lack of hyperbole and smileys in my post is due to the fact that I haven't actually played the first Tribes)

about time they announced it :)

it's nice to see they kept some of the ideas that were floating around when i was there

Yes.

I like the graphics a lot. Clean, colorful, vibrant. The kind of look that transcends technical limitations.

This really plays in a browser? Does it like... launch a client, or something? Or do you actually play it in a window like a friggen Newgrounds game, or what?

From what I've read from the various InstantAction previews, the game does play in a web browser window, but supposedly can also be switched to a fullscreen mode. The web browser stuff is also mostly about the friends list, community, blah blah parties, and stuff. Nobody's went TOO in depth with the actual features of the service yet, really.

I'd imagine for the sake of quickness, they'd download/stream game files as you're playing and save them as well as keeping INIs in some sort of Program Files folder.

I wonder, on the technical side, how many "terminal side" resources will this need. As in will it be a DX game, Open GL, or maybe something else? Would be neat if it was able to work in a browser running on Windows, OSX or Linux.

They say that their technology allows for any PC game/engine/whatever to be used with it. You "simply" need to add in their API stuff and bob's your uncle, so there's no need to use any specific engine or whatever.

If it isn't something like this, or what Tekno just said, then it's a stupid idea in my very humble opinion.

Also, no vehicles mean the jetpack mechanics need to be vastly improved over T2.

Did anyone else get an Armored Core vibe from the leaked demonstration footage?

I agree, in principal. In practice it could probably require Windows and IE and still hit 95% of its target audience, but it would be nice if it was platform agnostic. But how they can render stuff like this without some sort of technical heavy lifting on the OS side, I don't know.

T2 Classic really wasn't all that bad.

Then again GG didn't really have anything to do with Tribes physics after 1 iirc :D

I doubt Legions will be multiplatform. Despise being browser based, we're talking about actual executables, not scripted like Flash and Shockwave. They need to actually port the game and then make a platform-specific version of the plugin. Also, I'm 90% sure this game is running on a modified TGEA, which is Direct3D-only for the time being.

But I'm sure this will work on non-IE browsers via a Netscape-ish plugin.

Oh man, this is my most wanted game now along with L4D. I need some TRIBES'ish action!

I need it!

I owned the 3rd tribes game but missed out on the older two, so i'll have to play this no matter what!

It's a little hard to believe this game will be played in a browser too, I keep expecting it to be 640x480 max or something because of it.

There are two Tribes games.

I don't want to see your "third Tribes game," it doesn't exist and it was never made in fact you're crazy for even suggesting such a thing what were we talking about

Well I missed Tribes and Tribes 2 but owned Tribes Vengeance, 3rd or not.

I've never agreed with Crushed more than I did with those last two posts.

Although, in the interests of full disclosure, I actually liked Tribes 2 better than the original, which makes me the heretic to many Tribes fans.

I share your pain.

I PROCLAIM THAT TRIBES 2 IS SUPERIOR. IT HAS KATABATIC AND THE SHRIKE AND THE BEOWULF AND THE THUNDERSWORD AND THE SHOCKLANCE.

"So does this mean there wont be Renegades or Havoc mods if its 100% through the browser?"

In the TribalWar.com tardthread, a developer posting didn't say whether or not mods would be impossible, but the tone of his posts made it seem as though they might be possible.

Tribes Vengeance was a surprisingly competent single-player FPS-people who hate on that game only hate it because it wasn't as awesome as Tribes or Tribes 2.

The whole colon-subtitle naming scheme for games is really beginning to grate on me, especially when the game's not a sequel, part of a series or based on a licensed property. In this case it's just totally senseless (as far as I can tell).

That being said, I played a hell of a lot of Tribes back in the day, so I hope this doesn't suck.

At least it doesn't contain "of War" in the title.

HOW?
A plugin or an active X control pretty much allows you to do the exact same thing as a full blown program in terms of graphics. This is not a Java or a Flash based game, and thus will more than likely only work with a Windows based computer.

I played tribes 2 for AAAAAGES, originally on a voodoo3 2000 with wicked gl drivers that actually made the thing playable...ohh the memories.

The IGN interview wasn't too encouraging. No vehicles, smaller teams, no deployables...

Dunno how tribesy this is going to end up being.

"The IGN interview wasn't too encouraging. No vehicles, smaller teams, no deployables..."

They didn't say no deployables. They said no player base building a la Enemy Territory. Semantics give me hope! No vehicles isn't a bad thing since most folks skied anyway. And while the ZZOMG 128 PLAYERS shit was cool and all, is even 48 or even 32 players *really* that big of a deal?

Well, if you like single-player FPSes more than multi-player ones, it WAS better than the first two Tribes games, as it had a quite good single-player campaign... the game just totally failed to find the single-player FPS fan market, and Tribes fans abandoned it for not being good enough in multiplayer, so sadly the game failed. I really liked it, though, for the good single player.

32(or a few more) is fine for the types of games we have now. 128 or higher actually adding to the game would take huge maps or persistence to be really meaningful.

Vehicles just aren't needed with jet packs and skiing.

Actually it refined some of the Tribes game mechanics. Skiing, for example, was better in Tribes 3. Plus, the grappling hook was an incredible addition.

I really want to see some of Tribes 3 in Legions.
