GDC: Roundtable discussion with industry veterans

Q: I am one of the bad guys: I’m working on a big budget next generation console game. I want to ask about totally legalised piracy? Not Russia and grey market – I’m talking Blockbuster. 20 dollars a year you can borrow whatever you like then give it back. People are going to rent my game for 4 dollars. I won’t see any of that. They’re robbing me!

I have to say.. this comment makes me so sad for developers in general. I agree with the sentiment and its awful they don't get renumerartion for their effort. Especially if it ensures us sequels, etc al.

I sympathize with the frustrations that Greg expresses but, generally speaking, the people who end up making a difference aren't the ones who sit there and rattle the bars of their self-imposed prison while yelling at the guards. The people who make the most difference are the ones who take a look at the situation and say, "How can I make this better?" and simply do it, rather than look for consensus among peers first. If there's a better solution to be found, find it and then introduced the industry to it rather than simply talk in generalities about doing something like that.

yup. Its always easy to point out the flaws/problems... problem then is remedying the situation. This Greg fellow ain't doing shit to help. I hope he doesn't get hired in the future. Especially cause he seems to be unable to instil change or have yet to work on something we can all say is worthy.

Greg is fully aware of the problem. He actually recognizes this through a response from another rant of his.
And he's absolutely right: My rant is bullshit. It points out the problem, but does nothing to solve it. What would?

Not related but an interesting thing to point out.

so he's just backpeddling. Mongrel. Hope he gets blacklisted. Lots of great people in the industry. We don't need a mouthy useless derro.

Yeah Greg doesn't get much love from what I've been able to gather, ha ha. Not saying he's right or wrong but damn he really stirs it up without producing any results.

2. I think that one point about Zelda: TooT being the -analomy- for Zelda sales is right on.

i know it isn't clever to laugh at typos, but "analomy," on a numbered list, set off by dashes, and containing as it does the word "anal," is killingly funny. maybe it's just me.

Seriously, if this board were centered around religion...it would be as if it were overrun with maniacal cultists. It's filled to the brim with dumb. And it's an ugly, aggressive dumb. I hope it's leashed to the PC.

And Hitler?!? Christ almighty, what the fuck is wrong with some of you?

Let's get rid of Blockbuster game rentals. And movie rentals.

Oh, and fuck libraries too. Burn 'em to the ground.

please. movies will have the first round chance to make money at the theatre and dvd sales are a friendly enough price point to encourage sales. Videogames do not. Rentals tend to come out at the same time or close enough to game launches. Anyhow, its not like you're one to talk. I know you pirate games (courtesy of Opa).

...Agreed :(

I need to dig it up, maybe it was from last years GDC or something else, but I specifically remember Warren Specter saying something about how people that pirated games reduced him to the status of a prostitute or some such. But it was defintely him, and defintely not a "I'm okay with piracy" speech.

Play a single game early and some goofball tries to bring it up in totally irrelevant arguments for the rest of your life, as though it's some kind of trump card =P

Books don't get any kind of grace period before they get put up for FREE rental. Cry for authors, not for game makers. Blockbuster and Hollywood probably represent an extra 10K units in sales for videogames that might not sell it anyway. If game-makers really care that much then they can create some kind of theatre-like distribution system where people pay $8 to play a game for two hours.....though you and I both know that would crash and burn.
