Gears of War - E3-materials

Came home late from E3, so I'm not sure whether this might have been posted. Anyway Epic handed out a nice little artwork/storyline book at E3 on Gears of War. I've posted a few pics of it on our site. Here goes:

As Cliff Bleszinski was handing out the Gears of War books, he jokingly mentioned everyone should go right on Ebay and sell them off.

I always liked the guy. My respect for him rose immeasurably after that.

Of course, Cliffy B is the man.

Cliff is a cool guy. Actually as much shit as people give him, he is pretty freaking awesome.

I was sooo pissed when i got introduced to him by a co-worker. Here I am working on the publisher side for an Epic game, my co-worker is like lets go meet Cliff. My co-worker says hi, and says 'btw this is <insert name>, he is a big fan of yours.' SILENCE....

my co-worker might as well said 'here is a epic fanboyz which is leet haxor skills with UT2k4!!'

uggg, one of the lowest moments in my career :(

Really nice fella. Jetjevons intro'd me to him. We spoke briefly of our love for Transformers The Movie. And his level design in Unreal Tournament entertained me for quite some time.

Too bad I wasn't there, so I could take his Gear of War materials and shove it up his ass. Just for his borderline racist but definetly ignorant comments about Toe Jam and Earl on the show Filter on G4 (on the authenticity of the game's urban culture and the game's development, as if he's an expert or even has met a black person before in his life). He's a smug little punk on camera who acts like he needs to get his head kicked in. He deserves shit.

What did he say about ToeJam and Earl? I love the series, but even I was surprised with the third game in the series, whose original main villain was a disembodied Ku Klux Klan head and which featured black cheerleaders with pom-poms that looked a lot like watermelons.

I never did finish that game, looks like I need to put it back on the docket. I need to see this for myself....

He said something on that show about Toe Jam and Earl was made up of a board room of white people at SOA trying to be cool, implying that the game's content was not authentic. Essentially a corporate cash in on hiphop culture.

eh, Gamespots review said basically the same thing, but I can vouch for the game's content. Just irks the hell out of me that they bring in race for a game like this. The content is authentic, they understand the concepts in the game almost profoundly. Just couldn't let the game exist on its own terms, it was just a silly cartoon fun. Fuck Cliffy B.

From the Segaworldweekly newsletter interviewing Greg Johnson
co-creator of the TJ&E series:

Q) Just what inspires that sense of humor and attitude the
games have?

All kinds of things. One of the main things is a deep and
abiding love of Black American Culture (or African American
if you prefer), especially music culture. I'm half black
myself (on my dad's side) and my family is all mixed up.
The whole ToeJam attitude of "Trick or Damn Treat", and
"You Latisha you look FINE", or Latisha's hand-on-the-hip
"Miss Thing", or Big Earl's ultra cool "Yo Wha'sup" laid
back style is really what drives the humor for the main
characters. That's true for Lamont too. It's fun to play
with that style but with them as aliens on a "Messed Up"
planet of Earthlings who are clueless about the Funk. It's
also fun to play with the whole "religion" of Funk. "Praise
be for the Funkopotamous", "Spread the word of Funk". That
sort of thing.

As for the other characters... well, you can't think your
way to comedy. The best way to get to something that will
make others laugh, or put a smile on their face, is to
simply try to enjoy yourself and make yourself laugh when
making something. The game isn't "supposed to be funny",
it's simply that it's too boring to sit at this desk and
write dry dialog. If it made me laugh or someone else laugh
it got tossed in.

Whenever we found ourselves saying "can we really put that
into a game?" that's when I knew it had to go in. Stuff
like the line where the Hula Girl says "Hey don't tell
anyone but I'm really a guy" , or the little girl says to
ToeJam "My momma says you're my daddy and you owe us some
money", or the little elf says "Say I'm cute or I'll kick
your ass". Anyway, comedy is about as subjective as it
gets. You can't expect everyone to like it, but one thing
is for sure... if you approach comedy with a cynical
attitude, whether it's in a game or in a comedy club,
you're sure to not like it. You just need to let go a
little.

As you can see, Cliffy B's comments were really out of line and in bad taste, at best, and he should be forced to apologise. As well as that idiot (probably Gertsmann) at Gamespot.

Well, to be honest, Greg Johnson's origins aren't common knowlege. Without actually talking to ToeJam and Earl's creators, it's absolutely impossible to note the pecularities of the game's design and characters.

Don't misconstrue. I am a great fan of all three ToeJam and Earl games. But that doesn't mean I don't question some of the decisions made for the series' third installment -- and I certainly don't begrudge anyone who shook his head at what was going on.

But his comments are a bit more than him shaking his head in bewilderment, and besides, he was talking about the first game, not the 3rd one. If he didn't know anything about the game's development then he should've kept his smug, smirking ignorant fanboy mouth shut. There's no excuse for his comments, and I'm sure he wouldn't appreciate somebody else trying to break bread on his games and company maliciously. I guess he just had to be on tv just to act like an idiot.

Obviously, Johnson was shooting for controversial stuff for the third game. Part of the reason why i like the game was because they were able to think outside of the box and actually be creative. Many of the things were meant for you to go wtf. Katamary Damacy or whatever the hell that game is called by Namco was much more out there, and that was lauded

I don't want to belabor the point, nor do I mean to defend Bleszinski as I don't know the full details of his statements.

Simply, I could see how someone not familiar with ToeJam and Earl's origins -- and to be fair, there are many who neither know nor care to know the story behind the story -- might think the game was some type of corporate experiment.

And now, back to the topic at hand.
