Ghost of Tsushima vs Ghost of Yōtei | Final Gameplay Graphics Comparison

I'm not a fan of the boring open Ubiworld of these games, but there's no denying the visuals are quite stunning in this sequel and a clear upgrade over the original. Check the John Linneman vid on DF, which is a proper showcase.

Isn't this channel known for being disengenuous with their takes?

I seem to remember something with Dirt 5 and people had to put them in their place.

EDIT: less disengenuous and more that they have no clue what they are doing or talking about.

As I said in the other thread, it looks better, no doubt, but we're comparing PS4 vs PS5 which kinda makes Yotei look underwhelming in the sense that this is not a generational leap you would've hoped. I do love the grass getting cut, that shit looks nice.

Now compare the resolution and framerate that each one of these games is releasing with.

This gen was the gen that brought back 60fps. I feel like we don't talk about that nearly enough.

Not only is Yotei releasing at 60fps, the assets are much better as well.

I guess sure, but again, 30 fps vs 60 fps. If Yotei was a 120 FPS game I would've been more impressed.

This game also has ray tracing at 60fps which needs manually enabling.

Gaf are fucking clueless a lot of the time, preferring to focus on whether or not they would shag the included playable female character in a title rather than taking a holistic view of a game's visual fidelity.

Some design decisions bother me personally. Comparing the view over the world in the video, Yotei feels way more colorful, therefore unrealistic to me.
Snow and foliage though are impressive, but that´s something I expect from a PS5 game over 12 year old hardware. But I´ll play it anyway. Liked the first one, despite its flaws, very much.

Honestly, this way is preferably. Tsushima was good enough graphically, and even there we got some upgrades, graphics a while ago reached the level they didn't need to really improve from, and the attention is better spent on world interactions and physics, which have been sorely lacking the last decade. There's pretty ancient games that did this stuff better than most modern games, as all the resources were spent on diminishing returns on graphics.

A lot of the improvements are neat but are also like the minimum anyone would expect from a PS4 -> PS5 sequel.

I mean of course some textures are going to be better and snow physics is improved.

Compare R&C 2016 to Rift Apart. The difference is much bigger and Rift Apart also has a 60fps mode.

I'm not sure why people are up in arms about GOY being one of the weaker gen-on-gen visual upgrades. Even Spider-Man 2, another we widely considered middling, is more noticeable.

2x framerate jump for a console with 5x better GPU, 4-5x better CPU, 2x more RAM, 2.5x faster RAM and dozens of times faster storage. Impressive?

GoT on PS5 was 1920x2160 so also 2x resolution of PS5 version of Yotei, so they are trading 50% of resolution for moderately better graphics?

DS1 to DS2 jump in graphics was moderate as well (some people say big but they are wrong) and we still got 30 -> 60fps jump and 1080p -> 1440p increase. What is so heavy about GoY engine that still producer below PS4 graphics in some aspects?

It has ray tracing as well.

Performance mode on PS5 is 1080p with no RT.

You keep posting still shots taken in motion. Why not gifs from the video to show the difference?

Just out of interest, can Batman go swimming?

Nice try but if you have to put them side by side and zoom on a tree to prove your point, this ain't it.
Most of these "improvements" are simply due to the fact the game runs on superior hardware.
The lazy asses did absolutely the minimum work they could do for their paycheck.
I am sure that if you reverse the video's titles and protagonists, most people wouldn't know which is the PS4 game and which is the Ps5 one.

Bats don't swim 🦇

You can post high quality pictures or gifs to compare them and I doubt Batman would lose. Many games this gen have good or very good looking water with interaction, reflections and proper shaders. And water is just part of it, game also has mediocre textures and models.

The hatred for this game makes 0 sense and I continue to be baffled by the ridiculous takes people are making when it comes to this game.
Probably because people wanted to complete the Mongolian invasion story with jin (2 invasions happened years apart). Instead of jumping hundreds of years later.

I also heard the voice actress is also a gay liberal antifa member. Another reason why people hate the game.

I personally wanted GOT2 with Jin.

It's just window dressing in Arkham that serves no real purpose other than to look nice. I'm sure that's not out of Suckerpunch's capabilities.

I was surprised they didn't make such a sequel. I thought the best thing about Tsushima was the historical settings.

But apparently making a whole game around that voice actress and her physical appearance was more important for them. Maybe it'll work out for them, we'll see.

More like-for-like comparison would be:

GoT on PS4: 900-1080p 30fps
GoY on PS5: native 4k 30fps

So 8,29 M pixels vs 2,07 M or less pixels, more than four times more pixels to render. This coupled with a lot more dynamic world, volumetric clouds, better view distances, more particles, more detailed assets etc etc. I would say technically it's definitely a next gen worthy release. Not to mention all the improvements in gameplay or other content, which is probably also going to have noticeable improvements

If you are gonna mention the jump in hardware between ps4 and ps5 then compare GoT on PS4 and Yotei. If you are gonna compare GoT on PS5 then don't mention de hardware.

Yeah, I agree GoY could have better water tech for sure, but that kind of hyper realistic approach wouldn't fit Ghost's paintery visual style that well. I've seen a lot of people critisizing low res textures too, but have people thought it might just be on purpose? Photo realistic cliff textures just wouldn't fit the general look the studio was after. I'm sure they could have had different, more detailed rocks of whatnot if they wanted.

You want a generational leap from the first of a franchise to the second I'd say they're few and far between but Naughty Dog have done it a few times and obviously Rockstar. Sucker punch maybe Infamous to Infamous 2 but certainly not this.

If you are gonna mention the jump in hardware between ps4 and ps5 then compare GoT on PS4 and Yotei. If you are gonna compare GoT on PS5 then don't mention de hardware.

They ported GoT to PS5 and achieved 2x resolution boost with 2x the framerate vs. Base PS5.

Yotei has the same resolution as PS4 GoT and only 2x the framerate. It looks better but it looks like UC1 -> UC2 jump (done on the same hardware) and not UC3 -> UC4 generational leap.

yeeeesh, deffo looks like a PS4 game but they have supposedly made a better game with less repetition so I'm looking forward to playing this week.
Should of went to Specsavers.
On another note seeing as this looks like a PS4 game why don't you program the PS4 version for Sony?
Should be easy work and over 100 million potential customers.

All the little improvements you mention, plus four times the resolution, mind you.

Well, it's not my fault that developers are investing in resolution instead of even better graphics, simulations, ray tracing, or AI.

I don't care for the resolution or the graphics in general (i play in 1440p, 1080p or 4k in pc, i have a nice rig); the game looks pretty good to me. I was just saying that it doesn't look like a generational leap. But few games do these days. I like Fromsoftware games that have minimal improvements in each iteration and i'm fine. Just Sony first party was known for pushing the tech. Thats my 2 cents

Speaking of which, GoY does have significantly more robust physics simulation, reactive environments, volumetric clouds, ray traced global illumination, more detailed assets, a lot more realistic world scale with amazing view distance and LOD etc. I'm not quite sure what more people expect for the game to fulfill this "look of a generational leap"?

Found a good shot to compare promo (likely base quality mode) vs final (pro RT).
uA0D33RVpPD94K47.gif

Observations:
  • The bottom of the sword hilt gets an additional light bounce (very minor, likely from RTGI)
  • The pick attached to the Shamisen stops glowing (minor, likely from RTGI)
  • Much more fog in the cutscene (probably just improved art direction as fog is dynamic)
  • Slight orange glow from the farthest hut on the right (minor, likely from RTGI)

wYxtrIB2gpP5tFKq.gif

  • Either improved LoD or additional art in the form of banners (Quite noticeable)
  • The added banners are contributing to a slight orange on the walls (minor, due to RTGI)

lLHqaMlKIXWGteQM.gif

  • Person on bottom left stops glowing like a UFO (likely due to RTGI)
  • Much better LoD on the hut behind. Quite noticeable. Straight up looks like Low vs Ultra
  • The whole backdrop, horse and NPCs gets a warm orange glow. The lighting and shadows look correct now. Likely from RTGI

7:25 - the way the foliage and plants (and everything) get cut by the swords in Yotei which it didn't hapen in Tsushima, the lighting section starting at around 18:40, the dynamic weather that starts around 3:30, the huge texture quality jump at 4:18, the snow physics that start at 5:20 makes Ghost of Tshushima look bad in comparison, Ghost of Tsushima had basically no fire interaction (6:35).

Well...so much for "looking like a DLC".

Probably feared that the 2nd game would just be a repeated story. Mongolian invasion again, Jin must become the ghost and beat back the invaders, etc.

C'mon man. granted, the game looks good and it uses the ps5 tech, (SSD, better draw distance, RTGI for a few bounces, grass and leaves blowing, etc). When i think of a generational leap i think for example in TLOU (ps3) vs TLOU part 2 (Ps4) when ps3 has pre rendered cut scenes and ps4 has real time, or Gow 2 vs Gow 3 ( all great goodlooking games by the time of release by the way), or you know, the use of physically based rendering and materials was huge last gen. I was expecting a lot more of RT use by this time in the generation. For me, (at this date and with a few exceptions Demon's Soul's, cough cough) PS5 Sony exclusives all are better looking PS4 games in my eyes, (there is nothing wrong with that, has you said we got better resolution and better framerates alonside)
