Haven't watched any of the Peace Walker stuff yet - how Metal Gear does it get?
There's some in the main story, but a lot of the really crazy shit is in the side ops, which this video doesn't include.

And by crazy, I mean Big Boss and Kaz having sex in a carboard box. I know it isn't canon, but what the fuck.

Finished seeing the video and Peace Walker had some neat ideas but it was probably dragged down by the PSP. The lack of memorable bosses brings it down to me plus the cast of great characters besides the standout Hot Coldman and Rocket Peace guy. I'm glad they didn't play it since they probably would've been disappointed. I still like most of the ideas of it turning the boss into a villain and becoming a world power by recurting people. Hopefully MGS5 does a better job of it and concluding his story.

Well, look at what Big Boss becomes in Metal Gear 1. Dude has some fucked up ideologies and is kind of a jerk even back in MGS3. A lot of his speeches on war are naive at best, outright insane at worst. It's not surprising he becomes more insane and more of an ideologue as we get closer to MG1 Big Boss.

Well I know that MGS4 establishes that Big Boss and Zero interpreted The Boss's will differently, but they both idolized The Boss. Peace Walker takes place like a decade after the events of MGS3, but I don't think BB would just forget the truth about her mission in that time, or that he'd twist that truth as far as the posts I quoted on the previous page would suggest.

I always loved The Boss but PW cemented her as truly the greatest character in the damn series. Even those flashbacks gave me feels from MGS3.

Hopefully this is the last story with her as it was stretching it in pw with the ai stuff. I want new stuff in mgsv. But yeah she's the best.

there's a guy called hot coldman and you can find hideo kojima hiding in a truck

More out there than MGS3 was, but not as nuts as 2 and 4.

Great video guys and I'm glad to remember some of the details I missed on my playthrough of PW. All we need is that GZ video and then Phantom Pain is here!

Thanks! Should be a fun watch, this has to be one of the longest videos on the site right?

Immediately started playing Ground Zeroes after watching Peace Walker. Yeah that Keifer voice is jarring.
He won't be able to pull off the goofy shit that MGS has. I bet he won't talk that much since it'd be expensive for him to talk a lot like David. That's probably my biggest disappointment coming into MGS5.

Now that its pretty much all said and done (unless they turn GZ into a mini-series by going through the side OPs and Chico's tapes), I'd have to say my favorite MGScanlon is 3. Probably biased since MGS3 is one of my favorite games ever, but I enjoyed the hell out of all of it, even the parts where Drew really got stuck.

Still, MGScanlon has definitely been a ride and some amazing content. Hope to see MGScanlon 5 sometime down the road.

The Boss is 3rd for me after BB and Ocelot, but she is really awesome. Those flashbacks hit me hard.

Funnily enough, the PW video is exactly 5 seconds shorter than their MGScanlon 1 finale.

The thing with Big Boss in Peace Walker is something that cannot be taken at face value, and it’s part of the reason why it’s a post-MGS4 game. You need to look at it from the context of

MSG4 spoilers + Interpretation of MGS3/PW/4 events :

a broken man who said that he “died” on the day he killed the Boss, and also that of a person who spent a few years basically being a Patriot alongside Zero.

The thing with Big Boss is that ultimately, all the way from MGS3 all the way to till before his death, he was never able to come to an emotional reconciliation with what he knows are the Boss’s true will.

Peace Walker as a game ultimately informs us that Big Boss never “misinterpreted” the Boss’s will, he chose to not give a shit about The Boss’s will.

And the reason for that is because he was never able to treat the Boss’s death with the same amount of rational, level-headed coolness that Zero, or The Boss herself had. The Boss’s death left him emotionally distraught, a broken shell who just so happens to still be able to keep his cool, and stay a badass mercenary leader till Peace Walker. Peace Walker Incident only served to continue to highlight the truth that he already knew all along, that being that he can never, ever be The Boss’s legacial successor. Not because he’s misinterpreted it and he thought Outer Heaven was the logical conclusion of The Boss’s will.

But because he couldn’t accept it. Even though he understood why and what The Boss did perfectly, he couldn’t bring himself to do it because of how her death emotionally destroyed him.

The Peace Walker Incident only further serves to reinforce that, and the only way he can move on from there, was not his wishy-washy lying to himself situation which he deliberately did throughout Peace Walker, but to reject The Boss’s will out of his own volition.

The tape with
EVA
in Peace Walker only reinforces this imo. The last words by Big Boss at the end of the tape, where he
apologies to The Boss, saying that he can’t was the hint that he cannot follow through with Boss’s way of life.

I dont really like The Boss as much as most people.

I like her place in the series and what she means to that world and some of the individual moments with her but every time she spoke in MGS3 it was a silly over philosophising speech or something.

I wish MGS1 Kojima wrote her and not post MGS2 Kojima.

MGS1 was right on the line of poignancy and anime bullshit and every game since has tipped the scale over more and more into anime town.

The way BB speaks about The Boss in PW sounds less like him rejecting her will and more like purposefully deluding himself into not acknowledging the truth about her mission and subsequent death. At least, that's how it comes off hearing him speak about it to characters like Dr. Strangelove. I mean, it sounds like delusion -- he started MSF and left countries behind because of what happened with The Boss, no?

I feel like this all clashes with what was established in MGS3 and MGS4's gigantic Big Mama info-dump

Honestly, PW is the worst game in the franchise to do a The Movie supercut.

You cut away the hours spent fultoning, recruiting, micromanaging, outer ops, building ZEKE, eg the little things that make that moment when you see your base grow all the more special.

From having one helicopter and a dozen men to several dozen tanks, jeeps and helis with hundreds of specialists.

Boy, there is some real kojima fuckery in the peace walker story. The one redeeming value for me was
just seeing how fucked big boss was in the head over the Boss' death stilll. That kind of event and the repercussions should be given some kind of big gravity.

My opinion on the Keifer voice is still unchanged. Its was quite jarring in GZ and will continue to be so in 5 (i have heard he doesnt talk much. thats just as bad. how can you have a character in a metal gear game that doesnt talk a ton. especially a snake). I felt like Hayter had a nice subtle but effective change in his voice in that post credits scene that could have fit Big Boss real well going forward.

I'm super worried about that game in general. The gameplay will be amazing if it plays like a bigger Ground Zeroes, but everything that Ground Zeroes hinted at in terms of story direction doesn't give me hope. That game is the worst thing Kojima has written. All this dumb Quiet figure shit Kojima was/is posting hasn't been helping.

Kojima's games keep getting better gameplay wise yet their stories keep getting worse. It's a shame.

I liked all the stories of MGS 1-4 and thought Peace Walker was alright. Ground Zeroes was the first thing I thought he did that was just outright terrible.

Curious how the Keifer situation will effect that.

Maybe forcing him to work with less will change the way he handles stories for the better. Or it could be a trainwreck and he over stretches a limited script he had.

MGSV. Its gonna be something.

Ground Zeros is so left field.

From heavy handed musing about nuclear weapons and the meaning of war in previous games to Ground Zeros and its
torture, hardcore gore, rape and butt bombs.

Ground Zeros was made as just one piece of a puzzle though. Even most of the story is side content you can easily not see. But I am curious if that dark tone continues in TPP.

Yup. The stealth segments also felt the "purest" in the entire series(although Drew/Dan probably don't really care that much about that). If nothing else, Peace Walker on the consoles is the best playing MGS so far, even if it's missing a lot of the flair and crazy boss fights. A lot of things all around get lost by missing out on that game.

Peace Walker was Kojima/Murata's best story in terms of execution. As far as I'm concerned, anything that forces them from overindulging the way the PSP did can only help them.

Then again, I completely forgot MGS4 had a 30 minute conversation where Big Boss was the only one talking, so he might just ruin it that way.

I have Dan Ryckert levels of love for the Metal Gear series, it's hard for me to knock on the things it does bad when I love all the things it does right so much, even the things most people consider bad I still like (ie. MGS4, Kojima's story madness, etc.).

Did this guy actually edit together clips or just put them one after the other? They feel vaguely out of order. Or did he skip the mission?

Steve Blum barely disguising his voice lol. God I love his voice. It's amazing.

If Kaz thinks they're not mercenaries, they're a business... of soldiers... then what the hell are they if not mercenaries?

I mean there is a lot of torture in that second E3 trailer

everyone getting tortured

torture torture torture

You see, they're the deterrence to deter the peace deterrence. By deterring with peace for peace deterrence without the old deterrence-based peace vis-à-vis a new deterrent to serve as a deterrence to peace. Peace is the deterrent and the deterrence is peace, if not deterred by peace.

Peace.

"You see, I believe in peace through nuclear deterrence. My dad walked on the manhattan project, and then I was born unable to walk, so that's why I believe in nuclear deterrence"

"What?"

"ANYWAY SNAKE YOU'VE GOT TO STOP PEACE WALKER"

I think we should be done with Metal Gear.

Also how is their best video in a while, the Polybridge QL, not on youtube?

GBEast has always been terrible about uploading their videos to YT. I don't think their QL of that terrible cop game ever made it to YT, and that's some all time great GB content.
