FO4 isn't even more of the same, though. It's going to be a Minecraft/Bioware RPG/Bethesda Open World monstrosity with shooting peppered throughout. And, apparently, featuring cross-platform mods.

If they can deliver on the writing and quest lines in a way even close to The Witcher 3, I'll be interested. I have no faith in Bethesda to do that. The creation stuff looks cool and I'm sure some people will be into that, but the core game looks really damn similar to FO3, especially the combat.

That debate gave us one of the best Jeff rants, though

Man, Jeff relenting on it at the end is the saddest thing about the Destiny debate. Destiny is just such a damn weird thing. For a game to play so well and also to be so boring is just sad.

How has the bar been raised?
The witcher 3?

I love the Witcher 3 as much as anyone else, but I don't need Fallout to be the Witcher 3.

Serious question, what is there to Fallout except delivering a big pretty world that's fun to explore? Since The Witcher 3 already did that and delivered on the writing as well, I honestly don't think just having a cool world is enough. It's not for me anyway. If that's good for you, that's cool. I just expect more from my open world games now than just the world. Bethesda hasn't delivered on that. Skyrim's writing and combat were boring. FO had novelty going for the first time, but without revamped combat I can't see myself slogging through that stuff again, especially in a year with so much awesome other things to play.

Fallout isn't trying to be the Witcher though.
You aren't playing a Geralt. A main character that has been defined by previous games/books/everything.

Expecting a central narrative that strong is just begging for disappointment.

Fallout always shined in the small moments. The side quests, the surprising one-offs.

I think it'll be many years before Witcher 3's sheer writing and variety (let alone the quality) are matched in an open world. Bethesda games are nice sandboxes, but variety--especially in their writing/stories--is something they've never been good at and I don't see voiced protagonists changing that. Sure, players can make their own stories well enough in B's games, but it's not the same level as the Witcher 3's developer-controller story, with actual actors and writers at the helm.

We need Danny O'Dwyer in Giant Bomb's GotY deliberations to ensure that Witcher 3 gets its rightful spot.

Fallout 3 is one of Danny's favorite games of all time. I don't think that plan is going to work for you the way you want it to.

That's exactly my thoughts (and problems) with the current style of Bethesda games. It's fine if you're just in a game to mess around in the world, but that kind of experience is just played out for me. The clockwork sandbox nature of those games can be super cool, but I need something more concrete to keep me motivated to play. At the very least, the act of playing the game needs to be fun. I don't find Bethesda's combat system to be fun at all.

??? at the bolded. Bethesda has been very out front saying that combat is one of the main things they are looking to improve. Yeah VATS is back but I don't take that alone to mean it's all going to be the same as FO3. Especially when they're showing off things like the meaningful difference the power suit makes to combat this time around.

Let's not act like the Witcher 3's combat is anything special in the slightest.
It is by far the most boring part of that game.

I hope this turns out to be true. I just haven't seen enough to believe it. The combat in Bethesda's games past doesn't give me much hope that they can make a game that's actually fun to play moment to moment.

TW3's combat was unintrusive and the other aspects more than made up for it. Bethesda combat in general is just flat out bad and the games have less to balance that out.

Witcher 3 combat is just nothing special, it doesn't ruin the game.

Fallout combat has been awful. It makes me want to not play the games. Hopefully 4 fixes that. People are going to complain that it's too shooter-y, but I'll take that over the crap we've gotten any day.

Y'know, I actually wonder if Dan will like Metal Gear Solid 5. Has he played it yet, or is he going through it with Drew? I haven't been keeping up with new UPF/Bombcasts, so apologies if he's already mentioned it.

He's playing it and seems to be enjoying it highly so far.

On the Bombcast he's mentioned that he's played it for 10 hours+ for multiple days. If he's going that crazy, I assume he's enjoying it.

Great, thanks everyone! I should've known...

I'm really keen to see his post-MGS5 impressions.

And, of course, a requisite "Metal Gear Scanlon is some of Giant Bomb's best content" post.

Watching the PAX Panel... They missed a great opportunity to say that the Fisting Simulator coming soon was a stretch goal....

I've put in over 70 hours into MGSV and I'm only at 39% overall completion, with no signs of fatigue. I'm doing everything I see and managing the shit of out my base. I love this game so much. I'm hooked.

I never thought I'd ever put so much time into a Metal Gear game. I mean, I love the whole series, but the depth of V is insane.

I had to turn off the panel when the guy came up during the q&a and talked about the mobile gaming threat. I can't handle embarrassment by proxy. It's my one weakness.

The beginning of TPP reminds me of Wolfenstein a bit.

The beginning to TPP is one of the worst starts to a game I've ever seen. It's an hour of nurse tits and press forward to crawl through predictable macho action movie torture porn. The closing minutes are pretty rad though.

So it's just like the average MGS4 cutscene :)

It wasn't that bad. As a tutorial it's pretty awesome.

It's crazy that the moment to moment gameplay of TPP is so good and so addictive yet the game itself is literally incomplete.

It feels like merely the beginning of something momentous, which is thematically appropriate but narratively unsatisfying. Personally, I can forgive any story-related shortcomings if Kojima would confirm one specific thing about the overarching plot, but I'll post my thoughts on that elsewhere out of respect for the spoiler-conscious among us.

I honestly thought it was terrible. The first person section went from boring to embarassing when the nurses were leaning over you but the younger one had uniform zipped down. The crawl moments went on for way too long whilst the whole while you had a guy right next to you who could easily carry/assist you. Then you had a bevy of NPCs who existed only to be brutally murdered in-front of you. The whole situation felt like a tedious waste of time to me. I don't need to waste an hour learning that crawling makes me sneaky and going prone makes me even sneakier.

The game itself is great, but every narrative element of it is armature.

Just broke up with my girlfriend so now I'm going to watch Mario Party Party 5 because I just want to feel something other than sadness and disappointment.

Sounds like you really hated it. 'NPCs who exist only to be murdered' in front of you is a weird complaint. Nurses and patients getting shot up that bad? Either way, it was pretty great IMO.

O; Sorry to hear that.

I'm really sorry. That sucks. It's nice that Giant Bomb is here to see us through the rough times.

Thanks duders.

Side note. Surprised no one took the bait with the "MPP5" / "Sadness and Disappointment" and ran with it. I'm both impressed with weekend Bomb and a little disappointed.

Sorry I just got here.

Ahem...

MPP5 is the last place you want to go if you want to feel anything other than sadness and disappointment.

Oh please, I watched The Road for the first time the day after my 5 year relationship with my girlfriend ended. That was a weekend!

For those of you looking to get Until Dawn for a discount at Best Buy, prepare to be disappointed. This week's sales went live and Until Dawn is $59.99. It looks like that ad was a misprint, as some speculated. Strangely only certain regions have/will get that particular circular (one circular features Until Dawn for $39.99, while the other makes no mention of the game at all). If you get the circular with the misprint tomorrow, perhaps see if Target will honor a price match, as they also have a 10% off Until Dawn coupon via their Target Cartwheel coupon app.

The person who shared the circular with the misprint appears to be from New Jersey going by the small print in the circular. So, if you live in New Jersey, you may be able to take advantage of this. The ad is real. It's not a fake. It's just a mistake on Best Buy's part.

In my experience retail stores normally honor the sticker price even if it's a misprint.

That how I got my Logitech performance mx at half price.

It actually just seems like they're rotating. Vinny gets vinnyvania, austin get crusader kings, and alex gets until dawn.
