I think Austin gives the present day stuff in AC1 way too much credit. When that game was 'big', people were rocking Altair avatars, Altair signatures, etc. I almost never saw anyone wearing a Desmond avatar like 'fuck yeah Desmond!'

Yeah, but he was important in more or less tying the narratives between games together - and instead Ubisoft got their head all the way up their ass with the Assassins/Templars stuff, which is the fucking worst overbloated, no-stakes, meaningless narrative that has held this series down over the years. 3 should have been future-city with a handful of tighter, more scripted jumps back to different eras/areas to wrap up that conclusion, and instead we've got more games about this bullshit Assassins/Templars shitshow that nobody cares about than the original Desmond games in the first place. Also the whole aliens shit, which is even more groanworthy.

They really should have taken a page out of Indiana Jones' book, i.e. the end of The Last Crusade or Raiders of the Lost Ark. They didn't overly explain it and it served a thematic purpose while also providing some rad as hell scenes.

But then supports transformers and gundam which is all about cynical business people exploiting children to sell toys.

Except Gundam and Transformers toys are awesome. You're getting something out of it. I think what makes the exploitative nature of what Chuck E. Cheese has become so infuriating is that it actively detracts from the kid's experience.

Like, the whole appeal of the amusement center style things is that you play some kind of shitty carnival games and if you do it well you 'earn' something cool. By just sending out a set number of tickets, it becomes a bullshit ticket exchange.

at least they ultimately get toys out of the deal though, and not shitty spider rings.

Eh those arcade games always had shitty rewards.

The games were fun at least.

It's all about the journey man, not the destination.

An important lesson to the entitled children of Max's generation.

The coolest stuff in Unity was the
time travelling
stuff and I wish that was its own thing.

I think the games should have always just been historical settings based on characters in those historical settings with no overarching arc(not counting stuff like Ezio's trilogy because of the popularity of 2). I don't think they needed to do Assassins vs Templars EVERY time, but I also wouldn't have called it Assassin's Creed at that point.

The truth of the matter is that the AC games biggest issue is how they control, and I don't know if we'll ever be in a situation where controlling those kind of games will be smooth or as good as you want. It's impossible to go back to those pre-Unity games because of how they control and Unity's STILL a bad controlling game as is Syndicate. But they make you realize how awful the old ones were. And people like to say 'Oh Shadows of Mordor does the AC thing way better' because a fucking hill is totally the same thing as a giant geometric nightmare of hit detection that Big Ben is.

Basically Assassin's Creed should eventually get to the point that they're just historical porn VR games with free running, no combat, no stealth and no story

HTML5 HD was what cut me out of the Vinnyvania as well. First time I've seen that happen so I'll assume it's an archive issue.

Is there in Vinnyvania Pt2 for Super Castlevania?
I can't use the HTML player on GB anymore. Every video I use it on the audio isn't in sync with the video.

Youtube is Giant Bomb's best video player. Yeah.

Actually come to think of it, it's pretty crazy that we're 9 games deep and Assassin's Creed still has not done a "oh no the holodeck fucked up and now Sherlock Holmes is walking around Abstergo" type scenario.

I don't get the audio sync issue that some people have, but I do have an issue where I have to manually switch it to HD a lot of the time. It's still preferable to me, though, as the streaming mode uses like 90% of my CPU.

Well you clearly need to play more Sherlock Holmes: crimes and punishment then.

I feel like the only thing the chain amusement centers had over the various local options is the prize thing. They've basically ruined that now. I honestly can't see a reason to go to them rather than one of the places where you pay a flat fee, get free-play on a massive arcade, get go karting, get bowling, etc.

Oddly enough, all the Assassin's Creed talk lately has made me want to go back and finish AC 3 despite my knowledge that doing so would only result in more disappointment.

I guess I've never really had that chain restaurant/amusement centre experiences.

Also to be honest all I've ever played in the places with those kind of games are king of fighters and metal slug. :p

I want to see the modern day AC stuff go bonkers like that the modern day stuff is actually just an person from even further in the future experiencing his ancestor's memory, and that memory was from what we consider modern day.

i did the chasing lee mission in ac3 pre patch and godddddd it was the worst

Yeah some of those quests and optional objectives were crazy. Was an annoying Plat. I still liked the game enough but I'm fully aware of it's issues. I liked Conner though mostly cause of the Homestead missions.

I only ever went to Chuck E. Cheese once, but amusement centers in general were always huge for birthday's around here. If all you wanted were the games, the local ones were always better. That was a place were you could go and play all the arcade games you want or go karting. The prize-places always had a charm, though. I'm a bit sad for what they've become, but the alternatives are better in the grand scheme of things.

My Old Chuck E Cheese had the X-men Arcade game, and was one of the few Arcade games I played besides random ones in Movie Theaters.

Not that many Arcades around here in Columbus OH. There might have been a few but I've never really been to them besides once or twice at a Mall that I'm not sure if it's still in business.

Yup, those missions are what made Connor likable to me. Playing as a good kid that wants to help people instead of another snarky, charismastic lead was a nice change of pace.

Also, herding pigs is the single hardest thing I've ever had to do in an Assassin's Creed game.

Yeah I wish those missions were more mandatory, because I mean they lead to you burying a certain person no? So much of his story and character seemed to be there.

I still don't understand the problems people had with the Chasing Lee mission, got it on my second try. It's pretty clear when something is going to explode.

Would have gotten it my first time if I wasn't try to meet the optional objective.

I used to play arcades at Little Caesars where I live. I remember playing mostly Sega's Jambo Safari, that game was a ton of fun. The other games I used to play from time to time were SF2, Silent Scope, Time Crises and House of the dead 2.

Going to other arcade places I remember playing a weird underwater lightgun game, Namco's Rapid River, Sega's After Burner and Namco's Aqua Jet. I can't remember the other games I played but those were the ones I fondly remember.

I don't remember any chasing mission. It must have been super easy for me.

Oh, I don't know about mandatory. They could have been side missions for a Harvest Moon game and I doubt the larger fanbase would have liked that very much! I do wish Connor had more time to develop, though. Maybe if they didn't waste the first 5 hours with his father and the templar twist they could have made Connor a more intriguing character.

True, I just liked Conner and it's too bad the backlash against him was so bad.

I'll say this about the AC games, they've made me more curious about what the next Watch Dogs will be.

Instantly a no purchase though if Watch Dogs 2 has the same main character. Or... any of the characters. Except Jordi. Jordi was alright.

I mean not really, what I remember is in the Watch_Dogs DLC it's mentioned that Aiden has left to another city or something maybe where he sent his sister I don't really remember.

It's too bad for sure. Good old Ratonhnhaké:ton deserved better. At least the goofy, evil George Washington DLC was entertaining.

Yeah, I liked that DLC. I also liked the DLC for Unity as it gave Arno some character at least.

Assassin's Creed 3 is the secret best game in the series. Fun and varied main story missions, best side content in the series(homestead/ship combat), and the most developed story in the series with an actual structure and interesting characters(although Lee's sudden heel turn was crude) Never thought the pacing was boring and honestly if you didn't know you were going to play as Conner I don't think everyone would have been rushing to get out of Haytham's shoes.

Modern stuff was really goofy though and a major thorn in the game's side. The idea behind that stuff was great but the assault of the Templar headquarters was the worst thing in the entire series. Still think it's the most ambitious game in the series though and every game since has felt really limited in scale in comparison.
