Some of the fallout 4 buildings look like they came out of WoW

It's funny because I've always thought Bethesda should just continue their 2D retrofuturistic/comical art direction into their 3D environment and stylise the entire world much like Blizzard does in their games, rather than going for 'realism' with their awful engine.

An alternative would be to actually expend the resources to improve their art and engine pipeline. You know, in light that their games sell by the tens of millions.

I remember thinking Skyrim was a very pretty game when it came out. But yeah, it was more an art design thing than a technical thing.

yeah, the nature portion of the art is totally great. the lighting and shadow overhaul mods really drive it home. even the actual world design is good. but maaaan that engine...

people in that thread are saying stuff like "well the open world nature makes them have to use less processing power" and blah blah, but even on this gen of consoles that's a copout. there exist totally viable ways of dynamic LoD streaming available today. it's not like older games where you've basically loaded the entire level at once. at least it shouldn't be.

one more quick gripe and I'll drop it, look at that fucking FOV, I feel really bad for people who can only play this on console

So what's the reason for Starcraft 2's sudden drop from popularity in the eSports scene? It didn't even really occur to me until I stumbled upon that old video of Brad playing SC2 against Norm.

The rise of MOBA's killed it.

League was around for a while and doing great and then DOTA2 came along and the entire scene exploded in popularity.

Maybe millions of people had the same thought.

It seems unlikely that google would personalize bagel if you'd never typed it in before.
I don't know, who knows what they can do with the amount of data they have on me. They could be like "Hey this guy likes Giant Bomb, here's what other people who like Giant Bomb have looked up recently". Hell, seeing as I use an Android phone they probably even know what I was listening to at the time.

Anyway, I'm off to buy some tinfoil.

Think the new SC could revive it at all? I've always found SC more interesting than MOBAs.

Doubt it. MOBA's have a stranglehold on the scene for a lot of reasons. Blizzard doesn't seem to have an interest in cultivating the esport scene around SC2 like riot and valve do around their games.

They sell that well regardless of how they look, so why would they bother to change it?

Yeah that is true. It is the same crappy lack of technical progress others use to damn sports games or even TellTale games. This engine has been in use since Oblivion. They seemingly gaffa taped a newer renderer, but it is time that they looked at the technical qualities of their games.

No chance. Blizzard has their own MOBA now for good reason.
I played that for a little bit now and I don't think that's going to get as big as the others, it's quite different. Playing it also probably won't help you much with the others, like Drew seems to think, unless you actually got problems controlling your character with kbm, since that is the same.

At the end of the day, no matter how good or bad Fallout looks, I would still rather explore a gorgeous fantasy tundra than a wasteland.

Kind of the opposite for me. Which is why I'm more excited for fallout than the witcher 3.

Like yeah, it'll look like butt in comparison, but I've always found Fallout's retro futuristic Americana more interesting than the next fantasy forest blah blah blah. Fantasy settings just blend together so much for me unless there's a real unique point of deviation.

If anything, the seemingly overwhelmingly positive response to the Overwatch beta leads me to believe that Blizzard will be leaning heavily on that going forward, along with Hearthstone - which appears to get bigger every year. As far SC2 goes, it doesn't help that the RTS genre is dead as a door nail at the moment. We're still getting stuff from the likes of Creative Assembly and Firaxis, but the classic base-building, resource-collecting style of gameplay has largely fizzled out in popularity in favor of MOBAs.

But mark my words, when Blizzard eventually unveils Warcraft 4 (whenever that may be), we'll see a resurgence in classic RTS popularity.

I have a problem separating these ability based team shooters in my head. All these Battleborns and Battlecrys and Overwatches with their super generic names and cartoon styles... I guess Overwatch is the one winning that race right now? Interesting. I wonder if Valve is planning anything for the future of TF2, that game is still ridiculously popular and fits that niche.

Always bet on Blizzard, I'm sure Overwatch will be a huge hit.

yes, the cure album, Brad mentioned it recently but I can't remember where/when.

yeah it's pretty good. I like Pornography more, it's just unrelentingly bleak. They were pretty much literally a completely different band then.

I saw them live in like 2004 and that was a dreadful experience. they played like 6 new songs and then two radio hits and called it a show

I'm amazed their setup lasted two whole weeks without catching fire or catching viruses or otherwise being destroyed by a group of people who were largely pushing buttons at random, who knows what would happen given another week.

I wonder if SC2 and Diablo 3 were sort of disappointments and generally soured people on the franchises (D3 made a bit of a recovery, but I don't think the franchise is on stronger footing than before vanilla D3 shit the bed) because they had so much legacy to live up to. Overwatch and Hearthstone have had a positive reception because they were "new" IPs and generally didn't carry the weight of expectation outside of being a new Blizzard game.

For example, if Hearthstone was Magic 2 and Overwatch was TF3 I think the reception to both would've been broadly negative.

Diablo is fine. 3 sold 30 million copies and I think a Diablo 4 will do the same numbers. People will just be more wary if they try to do something like RMAH again.

SC2 is definitely damaged though. For a series that pretty much was the king of e-sports for so long where is it now? Languishing behind the MOBAs and CS:GO in terms of people interested in the multiplayer, while they've also made everybody disinterested in their single player campaign with their dreadful story.

Hmm I'll have to listen to that then. Before this I'd only really ever listened to their more well known songs.

Love that album and The Cure. Also loved hearing their song for The Crow when I watched that.

Yeah I really like that song too. That and the nine inch nails cover of dead souls are the best tracks on the ost.

Splitting SC2 into 3 games was an idiotic decision. Why do these major publishers think they can pop out a new entry in under a year?

And then Jeff tried to load shit into the TriCaster, lol.

God this Gamespot TV Dreamcast launch is so fucking badly 1999. Sessler and his bowling shirt, this host girl and her plaid skirt, see-through longer shirt over a shorter one, dark lipstick, Blade extra outfit, random panning transitions and sound effects.

Jeff's Fubu is tame by comparison.

Hell yeah! That OST was real good.

The title track for Disintegration is really special, and well known I thought? I had nostalgia for it from childhood anyhow when I got into them later.

Ah it may be well known, just not to me. For the longest time I could only have named two of their songs: just like heaven and friday I'm in love. I bought katie melua's piece by piece album on holiday as a teenager and didn't realise at the time that just like heaven wasn't her song 😳

the story may be underwhelming but the single player campaigns in SC2 and heart of the swarm are best in genre. Those missions are fucking fantastic.

And I think really SC1's esports success is all due to Korea.
