Peter is always great. He filled the Jeff role really well. Didn't know he was so into retro hardware. He rarely talks about it on the GS podcasts.

Fully agreed. Peter has a great knowledge of retro hardware. It's always great when he comes in on UPF or other GB shows.

So it looks like we can expect some Dan X Beast QLs. Kinda happy about that. Dan fits in so well with Vinny. I think only Vinny can fuck with Dan. Dan is not the troll king when Vinny's around.

No Dan on West Coast means no Demo Derbies or MPP for the month long duration. FUCK YOU DAN. Ruining my entertainment.

The long game is this is actually how Brad leaves GB. He offers Dan his spot and Brad will take his punishment and leave GB.

Good Job Dan, this is how Brad quits.

There's definitely something going on. Numerous tweets like that since he left for Ireland.
Could totally be private life, though. I mean, he just married.

The Dan thing being temporary makes me wonder if Vinny is going to take some time off. He's had a rough few weeks, and if he took time off that would leave only Alex. Bringing Dan in for a period would help shore up that office.

So UPF tonight...

No Jeff
No Dan
No Danny as backup
Possibly no Brad? (He's going to the International so he might be out of town already by the end of the day)

International is still only in Group stage. The live audience portion isn't until next week.

I wonder if CBSi is considering majorly revamping Gamespot. It still brings in the traffic, but that's for things like reviews and news, and unfortunately not the sort of stuff that Danny does. In addition, a lot of that seems redundant in light of them also having Giant Bomb.

Honestly, if I was CBSi, I'd move Danny and possibly Mary to Giant Bomb, and turn Gamespot into just pretty much a faceless factory for general news and reviews.

Hearing Vinny talk about the 999 and Virtues last reward on the Beastcast, I came to a realization of something that needs to happen, it might even be better while Dan is in town.

GBE Playdate: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

I would have killed a couple months ago for a Donganronpa let's play from anywhere decent that was annoying as hell. Now it's on Steam and I just need the time to play it.

Dan constantly being annoyed by the animeness will be great or annoying as hell.

Decent chance it's a trial that they are not saying is a trial because it's so up in the air what might happen.

Dan might hate New York too!

Maybe they are boiling a frog, GB fans being the frog.

Sounds like work. Likely just restructuring. They seem to do it every 6 months or so, killing any shows that don't work and chasing the new hotness.

I've seen language like that before, and it usually means Gamespot isn't making any money, and they're figuring out how to cut costs.

It has never made much money and they just hired a bunch of new people - Danny was talking about some new hire called Martini Bianco or something, sounded like a porn star.

They are not expected to make money but they do chase numbers. Plus they have this new shift to Gamespot Universe or whatever dumb name they have for the entertainment audience they are chasing with Comic Vine.

All those things, especially the shift to a more mainstream demo, scream of trying to keep the numbers up.

I might be totally wrong, and maybe it's a case of them doing so well that they are able to have the capital to get into new areas. But that's generally not how it works, especially for a site that up to this point has been dedicated to video games.

No, this is what the Internet at large does whenever they're given little to no details on an announcement to something. Show the Internet a countdown timer and they'll think Metal Gear Solid 4 is being ported to the Xbox 360, or that they'll get a sequel to the World Ends with You.

Dan knew exactly what he was doing and worked our sorry asses into a shoot or whatever.

You had to remind me, didn't you? It still hurts, mayne. It still hurts.

On a side note. I was listening to Patrick's podcast and Gita Jackson said she earns like 13K a year freelance. How the hell does anyone live on that? Also that most people she talked to seem to think freelancers earn 40k, some as high as 60k.

No I think we agree. Only difference is I don't think it is down to money/costs - but it is totally about traffic. They expect losses but also feel the need to be a "big" site in terms of numbers like Kotaku and IGN. Neither of which make any money either.

Now when they fired all the old GS editorial and farmed 90% of reviews out to freelancers - that was cost cutting.

In the wake of all the polygon situation I was talking with some people on Twitter about this.

Even if you published a review every week or so, which is impossible, you'd still be earning a non living wage in most cities.

$300 for a review seems insane. I know it's the norm. But holy shit.

One reviewer responded when I asked how freelancers survive said "find a spouse with a real job"

Every reviewer I know personally either is editorial in some capacity and is thus receiving salary, or has a primary job.

Gita's mentioned on Twitter that she gets money from her parents. And that's ridiculous that people think freelancers make 40k, let alone 60. It's a brutal buyer's market out there.

Lol no it's not

I get the impression that GameSpot is pivoting away from deep coverage of games and more into mainstream. Peter talked about on the Bombcast how they don't cover every game release anymore. They're launching that GameSpot Universe thing. I have noticed an overall shift in tone and content in their video production. Probably means uncertainty for a lot of the folks there that work heavily on gaming stuff.

Totally unrelated... pro tip for anyone trying to break into this industry: LEARN VIDEO.
