Giant Bomb #24 | In the beginning...

Gears 4 looks like a game that nobody wanted to make but it made too much business sense not to

Wasn't there some quote from someone making Gears 4 that basically said they had a bunch of cool ideas for a new direction the franchise could go, but ultimately decided to remain true to the Gears franchise to appease the fans?

Was anyone else weirded out when Jeff praised VR experiences and said he doesn't want traditional games in VR yet whenever the topic of VR comes up they lament the lack of big games and claim everything is tech demos and "experiences". Just another Jeff moment I guess.

Hm, this is not really what he has said though. Yes they want bigger/more complete games, but they aren't saying they want existing games but in VR. Nothing contradictory about it.

I think quite a few people are waiting for some VR blockbuster systemseller. It's just that nothing really looks anything like that.

Did Vinny really ask if they put an overlay graphic in real hockey showing where the player is going to pass?

Anyways, NHL 16 looks boring. Bring back 3 on 3 NHL Arcade.

Resident Evil maybe? I think if we ever get something close to a "VR blockbuster" it'll be on PS VR

MS should've given it the God of War treatment!

God of War is a huge gamble. Game could end up being pure garbage that nobody asked for. Gears looks like it is what it is, Gears. God of War looks like SSM wanted to make a new original game and Sony told them "fine, so long as the main character is Kratos". I'm not sure which is better really. They're two different strategies and we'll have to wait a good long time to see which worked out for the best.

Hm, I'm not so sure. The Move wands are a far cry from true VR tracked controllers, and gamepad VR games are just not good. I do hope PSVR is successful though.

Yeah, but they are also the only ones interested enough to actually get big names (and big games). Occulus gets games like that Insomniac brawler nobody cares about and Valve has it's "eh, just throw everything in, whatever" attitude.

We haven't had enough terrible FMV games?

It's not terrible! It's just not...that exciting (also they showed like 40% of the game already)

This has really frustrated me personally. VR titles arn't likely to dominate converstation but some are still worth trying, so I just try to browse new VR titles on occasion. It's so difficult to weed out all the garbage. Thankfully VRodeo has helped me find some gems.

Maybe! We'll see how those PSVR games are once it's out, but for now I'm very skeptical. Hopefully Fallout 4 VR isn't too far off, that has some potential.

even justin mcelroy barely does anything with fmv anymore and he was the foremost expert

fmv is over

I have to wonder when Justin & Griffin are gonna ditch Polygon. I mean they're already spending a whole month filming a TV show. I can't imagine reviewing video games is real high on their priority list at this point.

I wonder mainly because it brings up the question of who owns Monster Factory and what will happen to it if they leave.

he's a top guy at Polygon so I doubt Justin would leave.

Though of all the journalists, Justin & Griffin could definitely do whatever they wanted on their own with their fanbase.

Who to sketch next, Drew, Dan, or Alex?

plz include quote and background theme (actually Dan's theme is "America" and Drew's is probably either Metal Gear or Planes. I think Alex's will be wolf-related)

The TV news kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I find them entertaining but I can't help but think they're overreaching or overestimating their clout with the tv show/dozen other podcasts they do. Been a fan for a while but personally feel like they peaked a couple of years ago with their main podcast and have kind of been coasting since (memorable episodes are much fewer and further between these days).

Adventure Zone however is fantastic and is one of the few offshoots that actually justifies itself existing.

I wonder if Dans story counts as the first bad day he's had.

Drew: "Is that an Alpaca?"
Planes

I just listened to the part of the Bombcast where Dan and Jeff were trying to name the alien races in Destiny and they didn't even realize they were missing one of the five! More impressively, I've put in at least 100 hours on Destiny and I couldn't remember that the missing one was named the Cabal.

The fans of the series won't allow MS to try to change Gears. Look at how vocal people got about Halo 4 and 5. They clamor for Bungie Halo games.

Speaking as a Halo fan who fell off with 343's games (and to be fair, Reach began that falling out) the problem there was their half step to making a new Halo. Didn't quite capture the appeal of Halo or provide a compelling alternative. But even in the best of cases, fans will be upset that it's not the old thing, even if the new thing is one of the all time greats. See Resident Evil 4.
