Giant Bomb #24 | In the beginning...

I wonder if Fire Emblem will even be mentioned.

It looks like only Austin and Dan played it at the office so probabaly not.

Speaking of FE, I'm still playing Birthright on Lunatic and have put in 70+ hours. I don't think I'm ever going to get to the other two games.

You never learned the art of importing? How did you survive living in this country?

I've only imported three games in my life. Henry Hatsworth, Chrono Trigger DS and Ni no Kuni DS (actually Cheesemeister sent me that).

Not a big fan of importing tbh. But I did order Destiny Collection and FF XV from UK because they were cheap. 88€ for both.

Woof.

My first import was a US version of Mega Man X. I must have been around 10.

i'll ascend/descend to shenmue defender tier in defence of the 'restarting the game is part of the game' idea.

dead rising is just a musou game without it.

Same. Without any of the mechanics which make you actually be smart about playing it the game just turns into pointless killing. That gets real boring fast.

Also restarting isn't even a must unless you want the best ending right away.

I'm just saying that restarting the game is a cop-out in terms of game design.

i dunno... I think it's a better way to add consequence than a simple game over and dump back at last checkpoint like DR3 does.

It's almost roguelike in a way, except of course than instead of randomising you actually gain appreciable things (xp, items sometimes, abilities, knowledge of future events/scheduling etc)

So its a new game+ in the middle of the game.

Just watching the Watch_Dogs 2 Unfinished. The main problems in the first Watch_Dogs were the story / main protagonist, driving, clunky mechanics, boring side stuff, and the repetitive ways to hack things and do missions.

This all seems to be addressed in the new game. As someone who despite all the problems of Watch_Dogs 1 played it to 100% I'm quite looking forward to this new one. It appears the developers really tried to address the criticisms of the first game. Good on them WD2 looks good.

Based on the video, how does the AI compare to WD1 (which I didn't play)? Looked weirdly braindead in the Unfinished.

Wrong about commas, wrong about everything

I feel like it's typical Open World AI, so pretty braindead.
Which can be fun in an open world. Having cops turn against each other immediately when you hack their stuff is way funnier than it would be if nothing happened. You might as well be a wizard in WD2 with all the stuff you can "hack".

I play and love lot of open world games, so I'm not the pickiest AI guy, but it just seemed especially egregious in the Unfinished (e.g. Dan full-on decking someone and they don't even react). Even in something like Just Cause 2 where the pedestrians might as well be scenery they still react better than those NPCs. It still looks like a fun sandbox, though.

Dead Rising is a dope fucking game. The time pressure turns it from a mindless open-world game into Supermarket Sweep, where you're planning out your path through the game to either see the most content, level up to make future playthroughs easier, get specific achievements done (which actually rewards you with in-game items), or get a certain ending. It has the best possible progression system and setting that said gameplay could take place in, and it's got the brand of earnest campiness that only a Japanese developer could bring us.

2 irons out many of the rough edges and is definitely a better playing game, but most of the charm is lost since Chuck is a completely flat protagonist and they straight up ruin Frank's character in Off the Record by making him a stereotypical snarky video game protagonist. They both subscribe to the "video game developer" definition of cool and just rattle off one-liners after they kill psychopaths (which often come off as pale imitations of DR1 psychopaths) and dumb shit like that. Co-op is a whole lot of fun, but the sea of slot machines that is Fortune City gets a little tiresome, and combo weapons make the bosses a little on the easy side (and also turn the notion of finding and using standard weapons into a moot point).

Dead Rising 3 is the cynical "we want the Call of Duty audience" sell-out game people feared it would be, but that manifests through the gameplay and not so much the aesthetic or attitude of the game. The irreverence remains despite the gritty facade you see at first glance, but anything that could be even remotely seen as challenging (the time pressure, escorting survivors, fighting psychopaths, finding weapons and health, etc) has been turned into a damn cakewalk. It's fun in its own right, but there's a reason a majority of the discussion around Dead Rising 4 has been "what the fuck are you guys doing?"

Also restarting isn't even a must unless you want the best ending right away.

It's difficult, but you definitely can pull off an Ending S run from the start if you know where things like the shortcut and PP bonuses are. I managed to get the best ending and save everybody possible starting from level 1, so I think new players could get the best ending, especially if they focus on getting PP and doing the cases ASAP over saving everyone they can.

Yup. Dead Rising 1 was an amazing game. Probably the game I remember most fondly from the "early 360" era. Went into it not knowing much about it, and it got its hooks into me pretty hard.

I was also absolutely fine with its quirks, like save system, time limits + restart structure. Without that stuff the game would have lost a lot of its identity. The sequels are probably the best proof for this.

Just don't have a "GOTTA SEE ALL THE #CONTENT" attitude with this game. That's a recipe for frustration. You just gotta roll with it.

I just want to say that having Henry Hatsworth being one of the only you have ever imported is rad.

Oh you can do it for sure, it's just hard as you say. I did it with the second one without restarting.

The final fight will be East's Overwatch vs West's Doom

sadly, West has the two people most likely to stamp their feet

Vinnys been prepping though

He keeps reminding himself of the INJUSTICE of Mario Maker from last year. And Dan will have to be on his side. So will Jason and Alex. Its over for the West. OVER

Oh come on, 5 was alright, apart from that one guy who kept yelling "SKIIIIIILLL"

5 has the worst map they've played, worst items/capsules, worst audio, since they only had one camera 1/4 of the screen is a dead zone filled with the backs of people heads, back of a TV screen and a sofa, terrible audience.

But the worst part is them playing to the audience. Especially Dan, who became a saturday morning cartoon villain version of himself at points.

Love all other Mario party parties tho.

Jeff still engineered it to put Mario Maker ahead even after the majority of the room said Rocket League should be above it.

Anyway, those top 2 spots are already occupied by lame games, the true fight will be for number 3 which might as well be the true Game of the Year discussion.

Will it be Hitman? Will it be Picross? Will it be Pro Evolution Soccer 2017?
lol it is pretty good though
