I don't mind games that want you to explore but you have to shape the game in a certain way so that exploration is actually encouraged. shenmue kinda feels like it just drops you in the ocean in that sense

i think part of it is the game can feel inconsistent to interact with if you're a first timer. It can be hard to be motivated to go explore if you're never fully sure whats going to work and the game is occasionally inconsistent (i cant believe people are arguing in the other thread that the bikers blowing you off with the exact same message until the right piece of barely related information is revealed makes logical sense)

The same thing happens over at Kinda Funny. Colin is a massive hockey fan and is always being asked to explain the rule. Though, the most recent question about icing had two answers from him: The hockey rule and (more likely the requested answer) the strategy of icing kickers in the NFL (which helped win the Season opener for the Denver Broncos the previous night).
