I like The XX a lot. They utilize sonic ranges like sub-bass that most artists don't even touch in their music. I haven't heard an album past their self-titled one, though.

God, God that whole thing infuriates me. Kojima gets held up as this incredible storyteller when he expected people to feel bad about calling Quiet's design misogynist because she actually breathes through her tits.

Fucking shit.

I don't see how her design is misogynist. It's very sexual but she's still shown as one of the strongest people in the game

Only MGS1-3 had an incredible story. After that it was all shite. I now respect Kojima as a game designer and making fun games far more than his current, ass storytelling abilities.

"Wife and I turned our financial lives around! We are good with our money!"

"we bought two different VR headsets"

I'm so confused.
Why not just the Vive?

We didn't "turn our financial lives around". We live very comfortably and have been for the past 3 years we've been together. We don't struggle month to month. We have an emergency fund and are now debt-free. We are celebrating that we paid off our student loans after 3 years of $3,100/month payments by spoiling ourselves. I know not everyone is in our situation and it's definitely an extravagant set of purchases but it is not a detrimental purchase for us.

We bought both because I wanted the Vive and the wife (and I, despite my disdain for Palmer) fell in love with the Oculus Touch controllers. She will likely use the Oculus and me the Vive. Our hope is that we will be able to play games together. With how small the house we rent is, it may not be possible until we buy a house in the coming years.

Congrats! Feel free to add me on Steam and/or Oculus Home if you ever want to play some multiplayer VR stuff! Raw Data is a really great co-op game.

For sure. I haven't bought any games yet--I've been too wrapped up in Lucky's Tale and Farlands so far. I have a few games on Steam that are VR compatible that I will be doing with the Vive to start. Send me a PM with your username on both and I will friend you.

One poor decision doesn't invalidate his entire body of work.

No, but a history of poorly handling female characters with an emphasis on over-sexualization and porn-esque camera shots whenever a lady is on screen does.

And MGSV didn't even play that well. It controlled well, but everything else about the gameplay fell so flat. Maybe the most disappointed I've ever been in a video game, and I pre-ordered Thi4f.

I don't know what you were expecting? Ground Zeroes came out about a year and a half before TPP and showed you what you were going to get, on this front. The countless thirty minute+ gameplay demos that were popping up months before release should have told you what to expect as well.

Wrong about commas, wrong about everything
MGS V is 50% game and 50% busywork.

Ground Zeroes was dense and focused, MGS V wasn't. It also didn't feature F2P-esque waiting times and tons of randomly generated side missions.

Ground Zeroes had good level design, not a boring empty open world that repeated the same three mission types for 50 hours. Ground Zeroes didn't immediately take all the tension out of the stealth by emphasizing fultons to populate your shitty base. Ground Zeroes didn't run out of steam halfway through and make you repeat shit to pad out the rest of the cutscenes.

I'd go as far as to say I had more fun with GZ than I ever did with MGSV.

Are you guys talking about just the main Ground Zeroes mission or are you taking into account the other eight side missions

Even taking the side missions into account, Ground Zeroes is a better designed level than anything MGSV has to offer. A lot more interesting and a lot more going on.

She's effectively a Venom's pet in the game and her design was fueled by a desire for T&A I can't fathom how it isn't misogynistic.

Nothing about her character is strong, she's a servile character that the game puts on the level of a horse.

Like Eva isn't a particularly interesting or well written character, she's a big standard femme fatale and is problematic in her own right, but she still had actual agency in the story.

Also Quiet is the only real woman character in MGSV, there isn't even a counter point to her, she's it. The time woman enemies are introduced the camera zooms in for a tracking shit on their breasts. Woman are glorified objects in the MGSV universe.

She's a well written character. But the shower scene, the scene where you find her sunbathing, all of the helicopter shots where the better your relationship gets, the more tits and ass poses she shoves in your face, just cheapen everything. You don't even need to leave the series to find an actual good female character, look at The Boss. Or even if you need to have your female lead be sexualized, Eva is ten times the character Quiet is

The fucking abomination that is Quiet (and the B&B in MGS4 as a marginally less shitty prequel to her) aside, Kojima isn't that great of a writer, he's actually a pretty bad writer all told, but his melding of Hollywood excess (ie all the shit Dan likes), anime tropes, weird sociological/geopolitical commentary, 4th wall breaking and off the wall gameplay mechanics has always been a unique enough combination especially in the AAA space.

It really is amazing that he has gotten away with making the games he has.

Quiet's design and all the posing / perv stuff were really cringeworthy but I liked her in general, she was pretty badass.

She was a jumpsuit away from being a really cool character.

Dan definitely has the worst taste in music of the guys, that old beard rock-exclusive kind of dude you would rather kill yourself than talk 'real music' with. I know one like him. Nice guy otherwise but don't let him near the party spotify.

MGSV is the ultimate be careful what you wish for videogame of all time.
I feel the inverse summary (Too much story, bad gameplay) of what people didn't like about MGS 1-4 was the design doc for MGSV and, like Kojima does with everything, they went overboard.

Calling Quiet the best character in MGSV is like calling Leonard Nimoy's character in Transformers: Dark of the Moon the best character in the movie.

It's true, but it does not exist in a fucking vacuum.

Quiet's twists can be undersold by any number of logical reasons. She makes no sense. She's meant to be a "badass" (can Dan retire this word, please?) and little else, and what she is is undercut by the tasteless way she's shown in the game.

Edit: Like, let's define the term badass as it relates to Quiet: stern, talks little (if at all), kills a bunch of people efficiently. Oooh, such good characterization.

Does YOUR music talk about women, beer, and partying? I thought not.

Still without luck

Jeff has the worst taste in music of the main crew, and Rorie is secretly number one.
