Ain't nothing wrong with internet forums (although I'm speaking mainly of Neogaf). 95% of the time a Gaffer will give you better and more in-depth information than a reviewer. Why? Because Neogaf has an incredible cross-section of fans of every single genre, they are not jaded (much) by having to play games for a living, and are devoted enough to their types of game to not only tell you what's up with a game, but even tell you how they compare to predecessors or point you to similar games if you want more. The collective knowledge of Gaf dwarfs every other gaming media and press outlet, maybe even combined.

I don't really need other gaming outlets, I got all of my information from Gaf.

+1

The secret best part of GAF is that you dont have to post most of the time, since someone will usually chime in before you get a chance.

I never go to other sites for news anymore. GAF will have the straight dope, and I can form my opinion from there.

Yep, it's important to not get bogged down in the specifics to keep things moving along. Rule 0 of D&D: DM can overrule anything. It's a rule that should be employed more often than it is.

As the DM it is incredibly important to be fair (or at least appear fair to the players) when taking advantage of this rule. You can't let the players feel like they are being unfairly punished by your whims. An adversarial relationship between the players and the DM will quickly poison the game. Ignoring rules so the players can speed through boring stuff or more easily do cool stuff is great.

Attacking Brad when he was already at negative hit points was super weak.

Isn't the PS4 thing next week?

They went to a similar ps4 preview thing a week ago and all it got was a mention on the bombcast.... Giant bomb gonna Giant Bomb.

I guess they did this vid today because of the NDA date was today and they wont be talking about it next week since Jeff and Brad will be in New York at Sony collection PS4's during the bombcast time.

Hey, they made a video of that Xbox One event: http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/xbox-one-man-i-saw-that/2300-8194/

Wonder why they didn't do one for the PS4 thing.

Edit: Damn, 42 minutes. Like a mini-bombcast

Yeah, funny coincidence.

Because the PS4 one is in New York next week. Brad and Jeff are going there and meeting with Alex.

Your biased "giantbomb loves one console more than the other" shit doesn't really have a place here though.

But that part was hilarious! And besides,
Matthew wanted to see them take down the dragon rather than let it leave on turn 2 as stated in the book or whatever, so he had the dragon waste the turn to give Drew the opening. Plus, everybody's alive again!

Can't wait for the continuing adventures of The Last Canadians, even with the big next-gen machines coming up soon... Are they keeping that name for the next campaign?

Of course, the DM isn't there to beat the players into submission/horribly kill them with spontaneous dragons, but to provide a fun but fair challenge.

And that
would make a VERY boring campaign. Fucking dragon leaves on the second turn and leaves all the treasure behind, what the fuck? Rorie was just having fun and wanted to see how they would battle, and finishing the encounter too early would suck for the content, because they're going to remake their characters and hopefully Brad won't do it on pen this time. We can't have a 15 minute pathfinder game, cmon.

The dragon attacking an already dead Brad and actually skipping a turn was just so the dragon wouldn't kill them all, because it was going to.

Sorry for the spoiler block.

I rewatched the stuff from yesterday and actually found it hilarious this time round. Ian inexplicably repeating "you're the DM you can do what you want", Vinny trying to tell Ian to shut up (in nicer terms), Ian then revealing that he took some extra strengthening feats (?) because he "knew he was going to get attacked a lot", and Dave laughing his head off when Rorie said "yeah, probably" after Ian guessed he was going to die. The only reason this looks at all unfair on Ian is because he seemed to take it so damn badly. Everyone else was trying to keep the mood light by joking and Rorie was actually fairly diplomatic throughout - he didn't get riled up at all, just stuck to his guns.

Wasn't there another PS4 event recently that Brad and Jeff went to?

There was another PS4 event but they didn't shoot any video so not much they could do with it.

I love how Funky is trying to spin a MS bias when they all seem to be favouring the PS4.

Did they get footage, both direct and indirect, of that?

Jeff (on the XBone stream? On his Mixlr?) or Alex (today's Morning Show? Last Mondays? I don't even know) that they were going to New York where Sony would put PS4 in the hands of the reporters and they could play the games and make stories about it.

Maybe this is a more "in-depth" experience on the consoles, one that has video accompanying it? Giantbomb is not a site to write "hands on" articles because, according to Jeff, there's nothing to be gained from those. Video, on the other hand, is a different matter.

Here is Jeff's answer:

Anonymous asked:Why no video coverage for the PS4 event?

You’re going to need to be more specific than that, but if you mean the one they had a few weeks ago, they weren’t allowing direct capture of the games. If you mean the one coming up in the near future, we’re bringing audio gear for interviews and it’s so close to the launch that we’ll be getting footage in the office shortly after the event ends. If you mean some other magical PS4 event, then fuck man, I don’t know.

Prior to the Extra Life stream, Jeff complained about not finding the power adapter for his 32X on the Mixlr stream to work.

On the Extra Life Stream, he complained how it's stupid that you need 3 power bricks to power the entire thing (Genesis, SegaCD and 32x), and then commented how he couldn't find his 32x one.

On the Unprofessional Fridays from before the Stream (which I only watched yesterday), he complained AGAIN about the 3 power adapters and how he was still looking for his 32x one.

I hope he sees the Sega TRIO message I left him on Tumblr and doesn't think I have something to do with the product and want to sell it/make him do a free ad for it.

He mentioned it on the Bombcast and is going to try to get one.

I saw him mention that threecord product somehwhere so I think he's seen it. They really should do a 32X segment sometime, that console is a total mystery. And I had a Genesis as a kid.

That was a preview event. They went to a PS4 preview event at Sony a couple of weeks ago and posted a few tweets.

Acting like better fps/resolution on ps4 doesn't matter, but constantly saying pc pc pc is hugely hypocritical IMO.

But fuck it whatever they entertain me I can look past shit like that.

I would be interesting if Brad played Demon's Souls and had Rorie and Vinny guide/watch him since Dark Souls has already been done. Whatever it is, it'll be fun to watch.

Is it really hypocritical to be of the opinion that if you want to get the best one, you should get the best one, and not the one in the middle?

To be fair, the funds necessary to outperform the consoles with a PC are not comparable from a consumer standpoint, taking into account both convenience and price.

Sure, and the valuation may be different for different people, but doesn't Jeff's PC already have a 4TLFOP card?

I mean, I can sympathize with people who can't afford or aren't interested in building such a rig, but it hardly makes Jeff hypocritical when he suggests that the PC version of a game is the best experience from his perspective.

Hah, OP is using my (brilliantly titled) screencap of Brad Shoemaker.

I'm slowly and surely working my way through all 49 hours of archived video for the Extra Life streams, goddamn it video games.

That would be amazing: I never had the chance to play Demon's Souls and probably never will.

I'd say the average giant bomb user has a PC that could play games. Also remember that you can get a 400 dollar gpu right now that can significantly outperform these new consoles. Nobody would bat an eyelid if a year down the line giant bomb recommends the PC version of games. It's just that these consoles are new everyone expects every little difference to make headlines.

Besides they all outright said that they are getting the PS4 version of AC4; Vinny very likely to get BF4 on PS4. If that's not a loud and clear endorsement of multiplatforms for PS4, then I don't know what people want.

Early next year? Dark Soul 2 comes out in march. An Endurance Run when the world is still brand new to DS2 would be truly magical.

Because the $400 GPU by itself is enough to play games?

I'm sorry, but I never get why people throw this around like it's some sort of check mark against consoles. There's more to a computer than the graphics card. The whole point of consoles is that you don't have to break the bank, and you have the convenience of not having to take anything apart to install new parts.

Because I expect most people who post on gaming forums to have a PC with a PCI Express slot.

There's a lot more to a computer than just a GPU though.

I definitely agree that the average GB user probably has a comparable computer, but I do think that there is still merit in discussing these consoles head to head, especially because the computer is the obvious front-runner in any performance/visual discussion. This launch is unprecedented since PC conquers any game thrown at it, but with these talks, a direct comparison of the consoles is necessary since these are the boxes that actually push the industry forward and set those boundaries. I don't think it's too unheard of to say that if we just had PC games, this would be a small industry.

They are not going to ER/breaking brad dark souls 2 at launch. It is too new to spoil so much.

He is just trying to make good on his rash promise and new consoles plus busy season plus goty equals next year.

I have one with a 768MB GTX 460 plugged into it.

But I can't play modern games because my CPU is six years old. To do so I'd need a new motherboard, CPU and probably an SSD and a 2GB video card.

I don't come to GB for technical analysis of console or games. Leave that to other, specialist, sites more qualified for it. I come to GB for the entertainment.

The whole point of consoles is that you don't have to break the bank, and you have the convenience of not having to take anything apart to install new parts.

Bullshit. Building a moderate PC (that will slam dunk consoles) costs ~800 bucks (without a monitor). Games cost less on PC (even buying stuff on day one). No subscription cost for multiplayer (PS+/Xbox live gold). Stretch that over an entire console generation. Swapping out parts is extremely easy, practically everything is plug and play.

You still have to build it. Yeh yeh, I know people say it's easy nowadays, but that really depends on the technical capability of the user. What's easy for you isn't necessarily easy for everyone.

Plus, warranty, You have to tech diagnose and RMA a specific part if anything fucks up rather than just go to Sony/MS/Nintendo and say "hey, my shit's broken & I re-set it and it still does it". If you have a PC that's randomly crashing, that shit can be the worst, especially to a non tech savvy user. Even amongst the savvy, no-one wants to sit there doing memory/gfx/cpu tests to find out what's broken.

Sure you can go dell/alienware/other pre-build and stuff like the much maligned "apple" prices are there for a reason.

Take me. You hit 30+, have 2 kids & get a career and you really don't have the time for this BS anymore. PC's are still far from "plug and play" when it comes to driver incompatibilities, updates and such. We still live in a world where for every Nvidia & ATI/AMD update people recommend completely un-installing, re-booting and reinstalling the latest drivers for christ sake.

I have an x51, which was my re-introduction to proper PC gaming after years of absence, and I bought it to have a decent sized PC that would fit in my TV setup without any shit if it breaks, and I still find the driver updates, windows patches & bugs annoying. It's better than it was in the early 2000's, but it's a far sight away from sticking a disk in a console and going.
